Wine 1989

Early harvest for the 1989 Bordeaux wines: the result is a warm, very tannic and highly regarded vintage, but with relatively low acidity. The high alcohol content of the wines (1 to 2 degrees more than in 1929 and 1961) is due to a blazing summer. The 1989 Médoc Grands Crus Classés produced notable successes (slightly less so in Margaux 1989), but the accolades go to Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion and Pétrus (all three rated 100/100 by Parker) thanks to extraordinarily high-quality Merlots with controlled yields. Burgundy 1989 did not suffer from the drought and the grapes reached a high degree of ripeness (13°), with good quality. However, yields had to be kept in check to produce great wines (especially in reds). Serious producers made ripe, balanced and full-bodied red Burgundy wines with supple tannins: those intended for aging should now be drunk. The white Burgundy wines are very good, with the best offering alcohol, fruit and dry extracts to ensure their longevity.

Our tips for buying 1989 wine

For 1989, we recommend the wines mentioned above. Lynch Bages 1989 and Pichon Comtesse de Lalande 1989 surpassed Pauillac's 1989 First Growths (Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild) and are worth seeking out. The Sauternes wines are magnificent and can age further. A 1989 Côte Rôtie from Guigal (Mouline, Turque or Landonne), a 1989 Hermitage, a 1989 Chinon (Couly Dutheil or Joguet) or a 1989 yellow wine remain reliable choices.
