Wine 1989

Early harvest for the Bordeaux wines of 1989: the result is a warm, very tannic and highly acclaimed vintage, but with relatively low acidity. The high alcohol content of the wines (1 to 2 degrees more than in 1929 and 1961) is due to a scorching summer. The 1989 Médoc Grands Crus Classés produced notable successes (slightly less so for Margaux 1989), but the highest praise goes to Haut Brion, La Mission Haut Brion and Pétrus (all three rated 100/100 by Parker), thanks to extraordinarily high-quality Merlots with carefully controlled yields. Burgundy 1989 did not suffer from the drought, and the grapes reached a high degree of ripeness (13°) with good quality. However, yields had to be limited in order to produce great wines (especially reds). Serious producers crafted ripe, balanced and full-bodied Burgundy red wines, with supple tannins: those meant for ageing are ready to drink. The Burgundy white wines are very fine, with the best displaying alcohol, fruit and dry extracts to ensure their longevity.

Our advice for buying a 1989 wine

Very good Pomerol 1989 (la Conseillante, Lafleur), more heterogeneous for the Saint Emilion 1989. In White Bordeaux 1989 Haut Brion dominates (100/100) followed by Laville Haut Brion. In Sauternes, 1989 is an exceptional vintage and Climens, Coutet, Rieussec, Suduiraut, Yquem are at their peak.

In Champagne 1989, flowering took place in 2 stages (as it was interrupted by a cold snap), and the harvest also occurred in 2 stages (4 to 5 weeks apart, across September and October), but the 1989 vintage is very good, with powerful Champagne wines. A very good vintage for the Rhône wines 1989, and a superb vintage in the Loire Valley 1989 (a vintage comparable to the illustrious 1964 in Chinon). A very good vintage in Alsace. The 1989 vintage is also a reference year for Jura yellow wines.

Our recommendations for 1989 will focus on the wines mentioned above. Lynch Bages 1989 and Pichon Comtesse de Lalande 1989 have surpassed the 1ers Grands Crus Classés of Pauillac 1989 (Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Mouton Rothschild) and are worth seeking out. The Sauternes are magnificent and can still age further. A Côte Rôtie 1989 from Guigal (Mouline, Turque, Landonne), a Hermitage 1989, a Chinon 1989 (Couly Dutheil, Joguet) or a Vin jaune 1989 remain safe bets.
