Château Bouscassé wines: buy at the best price

In Maumusson-Laguian, at the confluence of the Hautes-Pyrénées, the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and the Gers, Château Bouscassé is the defining achievement of Alain Brumont, the undisputed leader of the South-West wine region. A historic property of the Brumont family for several generations, this legendary estate of 50 to 120 hectares runs alongside the iconic limestone cliff of Madiran, on clay-limestone terroirs so exceptional that they are affectionately nicknamed "Le Pied de Côte de Saint-Émilion". Taken over by Alain Brumont in 1978–1979, the estate produces some of the greatest Madiran wines of the appellation (Château Bouscassé, Vieilles Vignes, Argile Rouge, Menhir) and prestigious dry and sweet Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh wines (Vendémiaire, Brumaire, Frimaire), testaments to the qualitative renaissance of the Gascon vineyards.

History of Château Bouscassé

The history of Château Bouscassé spans several generations of the Brumont family, whose roots run deep into the Gascon soil of Maumusson-Laguian. But it was from 1978–1979 that Alain Brumont, a visionary heir, undertook a radical transformation of the family estate. Convinced of the exceptional potential of Madiran's clay-limestone terroirs, he set about a total modernization of the property: replanting of historic grape varieties (Tannat foremost), yield control, improvements in winemaking techniques, and aging in barrels. This qualitative revolution, running counter to the dominant cooperative viticulture of the time, would change the face of Madiran forever.

Over the decades, Alain Brumont extended his holdings by acquiring and rehabilitating former terroirs that had been abandoned for nearly 50 years, notably at Château Montus (1980), creating a true Tannat empire in the region. Regarded by his peers as a "rehabilitator" and "discoverer" of terroirs, as well as a visionary of the South-West, he has elevated Château Bouscassé and its cuvées to the rank of international references. Today, more than 30 years at the helm of his estate, Alain Brumont continues to fly the flag for Madiran and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, acclaimed each year by the specialist press (Revue du Vin de France, Wine Spectator, Guide Hachette) and by enthusiasts from around the world. Bouscassé is today an unmissable stop on the Gascon wine tourism trail, with its Table de Bouscassé celebrating the excellence of local gastronomy.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Bouscassé

The vineyard of Château Bouscassé today covers 50 to 120 hectares (depending on sources and recent planting developments), spread across the commune of Maumusson-Laguian. Ideally south-facing at approximately 200 metres of altitude, the vines benefit from an exceptional microclimate and soils of remarkable diversity. The terroir is composed of a mosaic of fine variegated clays — yellow and white — resting on a subsoil of fissured Cretaceous limestone. Along the edges of the plots lie two particularly distinctive terroirs of grep, a concretion of iron and manganese oxides, which lend the wines a unique mineral signature. The eastern part of the estate even hosts a spectacular and unique terroir in Madiran: blocks of stone shaped like menhirs, weighing between 1 and 30 tonnes, which "float" in deep yellow clays and give their name to the eponymous cuvée.

The encépagement is dominated by Tannat, the king grape variety of Madiran, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Fer Servadou (a local variety formerly known as Pinenc) for the reds. For the whites (Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh), Alain Brumont cultivates Petit Manseng (predominantly) and Petit Courbu, two indigenous grape varieties that have been carefully preserved. Some old vines are over 50 years old, and the replacement of vine stocks through layering has made it possible to obtain ungrafted vines (franc de pied), a treasure of pre-phylloxera heritage. The estate is HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certified, with a precise viticulture that respects the soils and is oriented toward the future.

Winemaking at Château Bouscassé

In the cellar, Alain Brumont applies a precise and demanding winemaking approach, the fruit of more than forty years of experience. Harvesting is entirely manual, with rigorous sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentations take place in temperature-controlled tanks, with gentle extractions that preserve the fruit and the finesse of the tannins — particularly important with Tannat, a naturally very tannic grape variety that requires delicate handling to reveal its best potential.

Aging then takes place in French oak barrels for periods that can reach up to three years for the prestige cuvées, using a blend of new, one-year-old, and older barrels depending on the cuvée. This extended aging, in carefully orchestrated cellars (up to 2,000 barrels at the neighboring Château Montus), allows the Tannat wines to acquire the roundness, aromatic complexity, and nobility that characterize them. For the Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh moelleux, Alain Brumont carries out harvesting by successive sorting passes, sometimes in several staggered stages from September through to December, which give their names to his cuvées (Vendémiaire, Brumaire, Frimaire, according to the months of the Republican calendar). The result is a recognizable signature: finesse, elegance, freshness, richness, and depth — wines ready to drink from their youth but conceived for long cellaring.

The Cuvées of Château Bouscassé

Château Bouscassé Madiran: the entry-level cuvée and flagship of the estate, crafted from a blend of predominantly Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Sourced from 45 hectares of fine mixed yellow and white clays resting on fissured limestone. Dark and deep color, nose of black fruits (blackberries, blackcurrant), spices, mentholated and woody notes; harmonious, fleshy palate with controlled power and silky tannins. A well-structured and approachable Madiran from its youth, built for 10 to 15 years of cellaring. Ideal with cassoulet or duck magret.

Château Bouscassé Vieilles Vignes: an exceptional single-plot cuvée, crafted from 100% Tannat sourced from the estate's finest old vines, planted more than 50 years ago on the best fine white clay terroirs, with small white and black pebbles on the surface. Many of these vines are ungrafted (franc de pied), obtained through layering. Careful vinification, long aging in barrels. Deep color, complex and noble nose, distinguished, elegant, and refined palate with very good aging potential (15 to 20 years). A masterly expression of Tannat from Bouscassé.

Château Bouscassé Argile Rouge: a single-plot cuvée crafted from a blend of Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Fer Servadou (Pinenc), sourced from the estate's red clay terroirs. Precise vinification and aging in barrels. Intense ruby color, expressive nose of red and black fruits, spices, and characteristic mineral notes. Fine, supple palate with discreet tannins, delighting lovers of subtle and elegant wines. A Madiran for cellaring, to be enjoyed between 10 and 15 years.

Château Bouscassé Menhir: a spectacular single-plot cuvée, crafted from vines planted on the unique Madiran terroir composed of menhir-shaped stone blocks (weighing 1 to 30 tonnes) floating in deep yellow clays. Vinification and aging in barrels. Ink-dark color, powerful and complex nose with pronounced mineral notes, dense and structured palate with a noble tannic backbone and a long finish. A memorable cuvée, testament to the excellence of the Gascon terroirs.

Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Sec Bouscassé: a dry white cuvée in AOC Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, crafted from Petit Courbu and Petit Manseng. Pale golden color, aromatic nose with notes of yellow fruits, citrus, and white flowers; fine, fresh, lively, and mineral palate, balanced by a lovely rich and unctuous roundness. A gastronomic white, ideal with fish in sauce or fine poultry.

Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Vendémiaire: a sweet cuvée, harvested early (in September, the month corresponding to Vendémiaire in the Republican calendar). Crafted from 100% Petit Manseng, with a discreet sweetness and rich acidity. Golden color, floral and fruity nose, fine and light, elegant palate with a refreshing finish. A gastronomic moelleux of great finesse.

Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Brumaire: a more concentrated sweet cuvée, harvested in October–November (Brumaire in the Republican calendar). Crafted from 100% Petit Manseng, with a more pronounced richness. Deep golden color, expressive nose with notes of exotic fruits, mango, and apricot; generous palate, with crunchy fruit character and well-integrated sweetness. A refined moelleux, ideal with foie gras or fruit-based desserts.

Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Frimaire: a sweet late-harvest cuvée, harvested in November–December (Frimaire in the Republican calendar), when the Petit Manseng reaches its maximum concentration. Brilliant amber color, complex nose of grilled pineapple, lightly spiced vanilla, honey, and candied fruits. Generous palate, with a dominant of yellow fruits, good concentration, and sweetness seamlessly integrated into the aromas. An exceptional cuvée with exotic fruit notes, for great gastronomic occasions.
