The wines of the 1987 vintage are of poor quality for the Bordeaux 1987, as just before the harvest, 2 weeks of rain came to dilute the grapes (especially the Cabernet). As a result, the red Bordeaux wines were fairly fine and refined, but with a reduced ageing window, as they were diluted despite the ripeness of the grapes. However, as the Merlot had been harvested before the rains, the wines from the Right Bank of Bordeaux (Saint Emilion, Pomerol) delivered good results in a fruity, rich and rounded profile (Château Ausone, Château Clinet). Decent in white Bordeaux, but mediocre in Sauternes, the 1987 vintage produced wines whose peak has probably passed. In red Burgundy, the quality of the 1987 vintage was good, with structured, medium-ageing wines, some of which were excellent (Domaine Joseph Roty in Gevrey-Chambertin and Dujac in Morey Saint Denis). The white Burgundy wines from the Côte de Beaune are less successful.
Recommended if you wish to invest in 1987 wines: for 1987 Bordeaux, turn especially to Right Bank wines (Pomerol, St Emilion) or to a few Pessac-Léognan wines (Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion). In 1987 red Burgundy, you will be captivated by fine labels such as the Grands Crus from Joseph Roty (in Gevrey-Chambertin) or Dujac (Bonnes-Mares, Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis). In 1987 Rhône, the Côte-Rôtie wines from 1987 are a real success.
