Frequently Asked Questions

Alsace stands out for its unique aromatic palette in France, built around grape varieties with strong varietal expression. Riesling, the region's flagship grape variety, produces wines of remarkable mineral tension, often marked by notes of citrus and flint. Gewurztraminer captivates with its enchanting aromas of rose, lychee and spices. Pinot Gris brings roundness and depth, while Muscat d'Alsace offers dry, floral wines of rare freshness. Sylvaner and Pinot Blanc complete this range with softer wines, perfect for accompanying everyday cuisine. Unlike other French regions, Alsace names its wines after the grape variety rather than the geographical appellation, which greatly simplifies the choice for the consumer.

While Alsace is indeed renowned for its white wines, it also produces red and rosé wines made from Pinot Noir, the only red grape variety authorised in the appellation. Long confined to light wines with rosé hues, Alsatian Pinot Noir has undergone a true renaissance since the 2000s. Thanks to gradual climate change and more demanding viticulture, some winemakers today produce structured, deeply coloured and complex Alsace Pinot Noirs capable of rivalling fine Burgundies. The areas of Rodern, Saint-Hippolyte and Ottrott are particularly recognised for the quality of their reds. These wines deserve to be discovered by enthusiasts who too readily associate Alsace with the production of whites alone.

The Alsatian bottle, nicknamed "flûte du Rhin" or "flûte alsacienne", is immediately recognizable among all the bottles in the French wine region. Slender, elegant, and with a characteristic emerald green color, it is the only permitted packaging form for AOC Alsace wines, with the exception of Crémants. This regulatory requirement dates back to 1959 and aims to assert the strong visual identity of the region on shelves and tables around the world. This silhouette is shared with German and Austrian wines, a legacy of a common Rhenish history shaped by centuries of cross-cultural influences. Beyond its symbolic value, this long and narrow bottle offers a practical advantage: it slightly slows the aging of the wine by limiting the surface area in contact with the cork, which is particularly suited to the age-worthy white wines produced in Alsace.

The Alsace Grand Cru appellation, officially created in 1983, designates wines from 51 officially delimited named sites, recognised for the exceptional quality of their terroirs. These plots benefit from particularly favourable geological and climatic conditions — granitic, limestone, sandstone or volcanic soils — which give the wines superior complexity and ageing potential. The regulations are also stricter: reduced yields, higher grape maturity and encépagement limited to the four noble grape varieties (Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat). Conversely, classic AOC Alsace wines offer a fine introduction to the region's diversity, with more accessible profiles and generally more affordable prices. For an everyday meal, the classic AOC is more than sufficient; for a special occasion, the Grands Crus are the obvious choice.

Alsace wines, whether dry or sweet, deserve particular attention when it comes to storage and serving in order to fully reveal their potential. In the cellar, they appreciate a stable temperature of around 12°C, away from light and vibrations, with bottles stored on their sides to keep the cork moist. Dry wines such as Sylvaner or Pinot Blanc are best enjoyed within 3 to 5 years of the harvest, while Grands Crus Rieslings and Vendanges Tardives can improve over 10 to 20 years. At the time of serving, dry whites should be served between 8 and 10°C, in a sufficiently wide white wine glass to allow the aromas to express themselves. The more opulent Gewurztraminers and Pinot Gris benefit from being served slightly warmer, around 10 to 12°C, so as not to suppress their complex aromas.

Alsace benefits from an exceptional microclimate that places it among the sunniest and driest wine-growing regions in France. This paradox is explained by the presence of the Vosges massif, which forms a true natural barrier against the Atlantic rains coming from the west. The result: Colmar, the capital of Alsace wines, records an average of less than 500 mm of annual rainfall, significantly less than Bordeaux or Reims. This dry and warm continental climate encourages a slow and steady ripening of the grapes, allowing the grape varieties to develop a remarkable aromatic concentration while retaining a refreshing natural acidity. It is precisely this combination — ripeness and freshness — that gives the great white wines of Alsace their tension, their persistence, and their ability to age with elegance.
