Owned by Henry-Frédéric Roc, co-manager of La Romanée-Conti, Domaine Prieuré Roch is one of the jewels of Nuits-Saint-Georges. It cultivates just under a dozen hectares using organic farming methods. The Prieuré Roch estate works small plots such as Hautes Maizières, Clos Goillote, and Les Suchots in Vosne-Romanée, as well as grands crus such as Clos de Vougeot and Chambertin Clos de Bèze. Farther south, it has the Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru monopole Le Clos des Corvées and a few ouvrées in Clos des Argilières. It has also acquired 2 hectares in Ladoix, where it produces a white Burgundy wine and a red Burgundy wine.

Domaine Prieuré Roch was established in 1988 by Henri-Frédéric Roch, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and nephew of Lalou Bize-Leroy. He began with a few parcels acquired in Vosne-Romanée, including Clos Goillotte, a favorite of Roch’s since 1979. After Henry-Frédéric Roch died in 2018, his right-hand man Yannick Champ, who had worked alongside him since the early years, took over the estate, carrying forward its founder’s vision and values.

Among the estate's iconic cuvées, one finds prestigious monopoles: the Clos des Corvées (5.21 hectares in Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru), the Clos des Varoilles (6 hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru) and the Clos Goillotte (0.55 hectares in Vosne-Romanée), formerly the private property of the Prince de Conti. Owning three monopoles of this scale is an exceptional rarity in Burgundy.

Domaine Prieuré Roch uses no synthetic products, either in the vineyard or during winemaking. Its wines are made from whole clusters without added sulfites, giving them purity and sensuality while faithfully expressing the character of each terroir. This uncompromising approach, rare even in natural viticulture, contributes directly to the distinctive, vibrant character of each cuvée.

Founded in 1988, Domaine Prieuré Roch now encompasses around twenty hectares spread across the multi-century-old terroirs of Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Ladoix and Savigny-lès-Beaune. It is one of the rare properties in Burgundy to shine across so many prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune.

From its very beginnings, Domaine Prieuré Roch has applied ancestral biological and biodynamic methods: the elimination of all chemical treatments in the vineyard, whole-cluster vinification with 100% natural yeasts, gravity-fed pumping-over and foot treading. In place of chemical fertilisers, the soils are nourished with a natural compost made from grape marc, vine shoots and cow manure, while weeding is carried out by hand.

The Grand Cru cuvées from Domaine Prieuré Roch, such as the Chambertin Clos de Bèze from vines of approximately 85 years of age, develop an incomparable concentration and depth. The Grands Crus and Premiers Crus benefit from being cellared for at least 8 to 15 years after their vintage to fully reveal their complexity, while the Villages cuvées such as the Ladoix Le Cloud or the Savigny rouge can be enjoyed earlier, between 3 and 6 years.

The History of Domaine Prieuré Roch

The history of Domaine Prieuré Roch begins in 1988 with the vision of Henry Frédéric Roch, grandson of Henry Leroy, the legendary founder of the celebrated Maison Leroy. The estate belongs to a prestigious family lineage closely tied to the history of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which Henry Frédéric Roch began co-managing alongside Aubert de Villaine in 1992.

The estate’s origins lie in the acquisition of the legendary Clos Goillotte in the heart of Vosne-Romanée. This exceptional 0.55-hectare parcel, once the Prince de Conti’s private property, had remained little known until 1988. Henry Frédéric Roch, then just 26, "fell deeply in love" with this unique terroir on his first visit in 1979. Acquiring this gem marked the beginning of an exceptional winemaking journey.

The choice of the name "Prieuré Roch" reflects the founder’s humility: he felt that "Domaine Roch" placed too much emphasis on himself. The inspiration came from a Bordeaux wine case bearing the name "Château Prieuré-Lychine". The word "prieuré", meaning a small monastery led by a prior, aptly symbolizes the spirit of devotion and service that guides the estate.

Henry Frédéric Roch died prematurely in 2018 at age 56, leaving an exceptional winemaking legacy. Yannick Champ, trained by Roch from 2002 and appointed co-manager in 2010, carries on this tradition of excellence today with the same passion and exacting standards.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Prieuré Roch

The vineyards of Domaine Prieuré Roch extend across exceptional terroirs, each bringing its own character to the range of wines. The geological and climatic diversity of these parcels constitutes a truly unique winegrowing heritage in Burgundy.

Clos de Bèze (1.0136 hectares) is one of the oldest enclosed vineyards in France, established in the seventh century by the monks of Bèze Abbey. At an elevation of 240 to 250 meters, over Prémeaux limestone, this exceptional terroir of brown earth, silt and gravelly scree produces wines of remarkable complexity. The vines, around 85 years old, demonstrate exceptional longevity, reflected in incomparable concentration and depth.

Clos de Vougeot (0.6236 hectares) is part of Burgundy’s Cistercian history. Established in 1100 by the monks of Cîteaux Abbey, this legendary vineyard has gravelly, stony terroir in its upper reaches and more clay lower down, while retaining highly free-draining soils throughout. The estate’s parcel lies in the prestigious "royal terroir," with vines planted in three phases: 1929, 1949 and 1969.

The Vosne-Romanée parcels form the historic heart of the estate. Clos Goillotte, a 0.55-hectare gem, forms a perfect square in the center of the village, in front of the Prince de Conti’s old cellars. Les Hautes-Maizières (0.62 hectares) and Les Suchots (1.02 hectares) complete this mosaic of exceptional terroirs, each expressing a distinct personality shaped by its exposure, elevation and soil composition.

The Clos des Corvées monopole in Nuits-Saint-Georges (5.21 hectares) is one of the Côte’s largest contiguous holdings. Bordered by the line of flat stones along the chemin des dalles, likely a remnant of an ancient Roman road, this terroir produces wines of exceptional power and nobility.

Winemaking at Domaine Prieuré Roch

The winemaking philosophy of Domaine Prieuré Roch is grounded in a natural, traditional approach that favors the pure expression of terroir. Since the estate’s founding in 1988, no synthetic products have been used in the vineyard or winery, reflecting an absolute commitment to organic and biodynamic farming.

Vineyard management follows a deep-seated philosophy: the winemaker "does not make; he guides." This French idea of "tending the vines" is less about controlling them than listening to and supporting them as they respond to their terroir through the seasons. The aim is not to create the wine but to bring it into being under the best possible conditions.

The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted, with preference given to the healthiest, most concentrated clusters. Vinification uses whole clusters exclusively, a traditional Burgundian method that preserves the fruit’s integrity and encourages gentle tannin extraction. The grapes are punched down by foot in wooden vats, in keeping with ancestral techniques.

One of the most remarkable features of the winemaking is the complete absence of added sulfites. Abandoned during fermentation and aging in 1991, then eliminated entirely in 1995, sulfites gave way to wines that are 100% pure fruit. This groundbreaking approach yields wines that are exceptionally easy to drink and offer an incomparable expression of terroir.

The wines age in oak barrels, often 100% new for the flagship wines, for around 18 months. They are neither filtered nor fined, preserving their authenticity and natural complexity. This natural approach produces wines that are relatively light in color but have extraordinary aromatic intensity.

Grands Crus

Clos de Bèze - A legendary wine of extraordinary complexity, both fresh and concentrated, with velvety, silky tannins. This wine from a 1.0136-hectare parcel of vines around 85 years old embodies the essence of this historic terroir, established by monks in the seventh century. Clos de Vougeot - A powerful, precise and "squarely structured" wine with a Cistercian spirit. From a 0.6236-hectare parcel in the "royal terroir," it expresses the nobility and depth of the terroir established by the monks of Cîteaux in 1100. Vines planted between 1929 and 1969 lend remarkable complexity to this prestigious wine.

Premiers Crus

Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Clos des Corvées Monopole Vieilles Vignes - An exceptional wine made exclusively from the finest clusters of small, concentrated berries. Powerful and full-bodied, dense and structured, with a very long finish, it embodies the nobility of Nuits-Saint-Georges. This 5.21-hectare monopole wine, from exceptionally old vines, is one of the finest expressions of the Prémeaux terroir.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Clos des Argillières - A very warm, rich wine with exceptionally dense, well-rounded tannins, expressing the full-bodied beauty of Nuits-Saint-Georges. This 0.69-hectare parcel, farmed organically for years and added to the estate in 2009, borders Clos des Corvées but differs in its steep, rocky slope.

Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Le Clos des Varoilles Monopole - A wine combining the power and elegance of the finest Gevreys with a distinctive freshness. Added to the estate in 2020, this six-hectare parcel is the fifth-largest monopole on the Côte. Sheltered by the Combe Lavaux, it produces wines of great freshness, especially welcome in heatwave years.

Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots - A classic Vosne-Romanée wine, supple and silky, with consistent quality across vintages. This 1.02-hectare parcel, planted around 50 years ago, lies on the gentle slope below Les Beaumonts and Aux Brûlées, offering a pure, balanced expression of its terroir.
