Delicious wines from Savoie!
The domaine des Ardoisières is located in Savoie in Fréterive, between Chambéry and Albertville, and its recent history is quite remarkable. In the 1990s, the mayor of the village of Cevins wanted to revive the vineyard that had once existed and had disappeared following Phylloxera. A passionate winemaker, Michel Grisard, replanted the Cevins hillside in 1997 (it took 5 years to obtain the first harvest), and Brice Omont, an agricultural engineer, joined him in 2002. Now at the head of the domaine des Ardoisières, Brice Omont has a vineyard of 16 ha divided into 2 distinct parts: the Cevins hillside and the St Pierre de Soucy hillside.
The Cevins hillside is entirely terraced on mica schist, with slopes reaching nearly 70% and very low yields (25 hL/ha). The Saint-Pierre-de-Soucy hillside, by contrast, consists of sedimentary rock, Jurassic schistous marl, and clay-limestone soil on moderate to steep slopes, with an average yield of around 40 hL/ha. The 12 hectares of white grapes at Domaine des Ardoisières are planted with Altesse, Chardonnay, white Mondeuse, Malvoisie, Roussanne, and Jacquère; its 4 hectares of red grapes are planted with Persan, Gamay, and black Mondeuse. Domaine des Ardoisières is farmed biodynamically and has succeeded in reviving certain grape varieties that were sometimes dismissed, such as white Mondeuse and Persan. Analysis of the vineyard plots would confirm the sound intuition that this was an exceptional terroir, producing superb wines thanks to its mica-schist-rich soil. Domaine des Ardoisières’ Argile Savoie red cuvée (IGP des Allobroges) is a fresh, easy-drinking wine of distinctive character and generous flavors. Argile Savoie white is a pure, finely etched wine with appealing acidity supported by notes of citrus and pine resin. The white Schistes cuvée blends four Savoyard grape varieties: Jacquère, Malvoisie, white Mondeuse, and Roussanne. Its palate is focused and long, with crystalline purity. Production is limited to just 7,000 bottles. The Améthyste cuvée blends Persan and black Mondeuse, releasing aromas of blueberries, pepper, and spice, with a generous, powerful palate that retains great finesse. Finally, Quartz is the prestige cuvée of Domaine des Ardoisières: 100% Altesse aged for 12 months in barrels, with notes of quince, mirabelle plum, walnut, and wisteria. The palate is structured, intense, and perfectly balanced, with great finesse, salinity, and remarkable persistence. Domaine des Ardoisières thus offers a fine range of white and red wines combining purity of expression, richness, and distinctive personality, and is helping to revive the great wines of Savoie.
