Frequently asked questions about Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé can trace its history back more than 550 years, to 1450 and the Chambolle vineyards owned by a certain Jean Moisson. Passed down through generations, the estate is now run by the 20th generation of the same family: Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, granddaughters of the late Comte Georges de Vogüé. It is one of the oldest wine estates in all of Burgundy.

The estate owns approximately 80% of the Grand Cru Le Musigny, one of the most hallowed vineyards in Burgundy. Production remains deliberately limited: only the fruit from the oldest vines (40 years and above) goes into the signature cuvée, of which fewer than 1,000 cases are produced per vintage. This low volume, combined with the excellence of the terroir, explains the extreme rarity of these bottles on the market.

The estate uses no synthetic products and its viticultural practices meet organic standards, without certification. The vines are short-pruned and yields do not exceed 30 hl/ha. In the cellar, the grapes are partially destemmed, pumping-over is favoured over punching-down, and ageing lasts 14 to 15 months in barrels with 30 to 50% new oak. The wines are not filtered, or only very lightly so.

The estate's viticultural heritage includes 7.5 ha in the Musigny grand cru, 2.7 ha in Bonnes-Mares located to the north of the village, as well as 56 ares of Chambolle-Musigny 1er cru Les Amoureuses. These appellations are among the most prestigious in the Côte de Nuits and represent the heart of the estate's identity.

Yes, and it is a true curiosity of Burgundy. Across 0.65 ha, Chardonnay vines produce the Musigny Blanc, perhaps the rarest white grand cru in the entire Côte de Nuits. It was only in 2015, some 25 years after replanting, that the Grand Cru designation reappeared on the label, as the estate had chosen to wait for the vines to reach full maturity before releasing it under this classification.

The estate's wines are renowned for their exceptional ageing potential. De Vogüé's style is the epitome of Chambolle: delicate aromas, refined yet deep flavours, and a silky finish. These are wines that reach their peak not at ten years, but at thirty. For village and premier cru appellations, a cellaring period of 5 to 15 years is generally recommended, while grand crus such as the Musigny Vieilles Vignes merit considerably more patience.

History of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

The history of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé dates back to the Middle Ages, with buildings in Chambolle-Musigny constructed by Jean Moisson in the mid-15th century. This extraordinary wine property has passed down through the centuries within the same family line, demonstrating exceptional continuity in the transmission of its heritage and expertise. For more than three hundred years, the estate passed through the female line, preserving its integrity across generations.

In 1766, Catherine Bouhier de Versalieu married the Marquis Cérice-François Melchior de Vogüé, a descendant of one of France’s oldest noble families. This is how the de Vogüé name entered Burgundian wine history. The family managed to retain the property during the French Revolution, when many estates were confiscated or broken up.

In 1925, Comte Georges de Vogüé inherited the estate and gave it its current name. A man of strong character and vision, he profoundly shaped the property’s development until his death in 1987. His daughter Elisabeth, Baronne Bertrand de Ladoucette, then took the reins and undertook a major transformation of the estate in the early 1980s. She assembled an exceptional team that restored the estate’s standing after difficult years.

Today, the twentieth generation leads this prestigious wine estate. Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, granddaughters of Comte Georges de Vogüé, carry on the family legacy with passion and exacting standards. They are supported by a dedicated team of professionals: Jean-Luc Pépin, commercial director since 1988; Eric Bourgogne, vineyard manager since 1996; and Jean Lupatelli, cellar master since 2021, who succeeded François Millet after thirty-five years of outstanding service.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

The vineyards of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé cover approximately twelve and a half hectares across Chambolle-Musigny’s most prestigious terroirs. Modest in size, this holding nevertheless contains plots of inestimable value, shaped by millennia of geological change.

The estate owns approximately 80% of the Le Musigny Grand Cru, as well as a significant portion of the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru. Its dominant position in Musigny, with 7.2 hectares out of the appellation’s total 10.85 hectares, makes the estate the undisputed custodian of this legendary terroir. The plots lie on stony red clay soils over limestone bedrock, providing optimal drainage and exceptional exposure that give the wines incomparable finesse.

The estate also owns 2.7 hectares in the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, at the southern end of the appellation on the Chambolle-Musigny side. These plots have iron-rich soil over a substrate of crinoidal limestone, producing wines more full-bodied and structured than Musigny, with characteristic aromas of violets and wildflowers.

Another of the estate’s treasures is 0.56 hectares in the Les Amoureuses Premier Cru, a plot in the upper part of the vineyard separated from Musigny by a single path. This exceptional terroir produces wines of remarkable power and sensuality, often rivaling certain Grands Crus in quality and aging potential.

The estate also cultivates vines in the Chambolle-Musigny village appellation, notably at the Les Porlottes lieu-dit high on the slope, as well as a few rows in the Les Fuées and Les Baudes premiers crus. Though less prestigious in classification, these plots receive the same meticulous care and produce wines of remarkable quality.

One unique feature sets the estate apart: 0.65 hectares of Chardonnay planted within Musigny, on soils where limestone bedrock reaches the surface. These vines produce the exceptionally rare Musigny Blanc, the only white wine made in this Grand Cru, making Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé the custodian of a winegrowing treasure unique in Burgundy.

Viticulture at the estate follows organic farming principles, though it is not officially certified. The vines, which average more than forty years old, are pruned short using traditional methods. Yields are strictly limited to thirty hectoliters per hectare, equivalent to five or six bunches of Pinot Noir per vine, ensuring optimal flavor concentration and a pure expression of terroir.

Winemaking at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

Winemaking at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé rests on a fundamental principle: intervene as little as possible so the terroir can express itself fully. This respectful, minimalist approach guides every stage of production, from vine to bottle.

The grapes are harvested by hand, with exceptional attention paid to their phenolic ripeness. Since 2021, at Jean Lupatelli’s initiative, small twenty-kilogram crates have been used to limit crushing and preserve the berries intact until they reach the winery. A gentle elevator system has replaced the old mechanical pumps, allowing the grapes to reach the tanks in optimal condition.

One of the most notable changes is the use of whole bunches in recent vintages, at a rate of 50% for Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines. This technique adds another aromatic dimension and a silky palate texture while preserving the freshness and elegance characteristic of the estate.

The grapes are partially destemmed for vinification, depending on the cuvée and vintage. Fermentation begins naturally through native yeasts present on the berries and in the winery. Pump-overs are favored over punch-downs to extract aromatic and tannic compounds gently and gradually. Maceration is extended to develop color and flavor without aggressive extraction.

Press wine is extracted gently and used sparingly in the final blends. According to the cellar master, these polyphenol-rich wines need carefully controlled oxygen exposure during aging to reveal their full complexity and aging potential.

Aging takes place over fourteen to fifteen months in Allier oak barrels, with new oak ranging from thirty to fifty percent depending on the cuvée and vintage. This moderate use of new oak gives the wine structure without obscuring the terroir’s subtle nuances. Barrel type and the proportion of new oak are tailored to each plot and each year in a constant pursuit of the purest, most authentic expression.

After barrel aging, the wines undergo a blending phase, spending two months in tanks to harmonize the contents of the different barrels before bottling. Depending on the vintage, they are either lightly filtered using lenticular filters or left unfiltered to preserve their integrity and aromatic complexity.

The Cuvées of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

Chambolle-Musigny Village

The Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru is made exclusively from fruit from young Musigny vines. Affectionately nicknamed "Musigny in short pants" by the estate, this distinctive cuvée offers an approachable introduction to its wines. It also includes selected Pinot Noir from the Les Porlottes lieu-dit and fruit from older vines declassified from the Les Baudes and Les Fuées premiers crus. The wine offers aromas of ripe raspberries, white peaches, and colorful peppers, combining finesse with lovely concentration and remarkable length on the palate.

Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru

This cuvée captures the essence of Musigny’s young vines, which are less than twenty-five years old. Although the bottle contains no Pinot Noir from a true Premier Cru vineyard, the wine has a depth and complexity that belie its status. Tart red berries mingle with baking spices, creating a texture both dense and lithe, with silky tannins. Its fleshy, velvety fruit is fully ripe yet retains its freshness, finishing on a characteristic saline note.

Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Amoureuses

The estate’s few rows in Les Amoureuses lie in the highest part of the vineyard, separated from the Musigny Grand Cru by a single path. This legendary plot produces a powerful, sensual wine that rivals the finest Grands Crus. The estate’s Les Amoureuses Premier Cru ages as well as the most prestigious Grand Cru bottlings, developing complex aromas of black fruit, spices, and forest floor over time, supported by a noble tannic structure and exceptional length.

Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru

The estate’s vines in Bonnes-Mares, covering nearly seven acres, are all on the Chambolle side, where the terroir has more red clay, unlike the Morey-Saint-Denis side, which contains more marl and limestone. This geological makeup gives the wine a rounder, more velvety texture and characteristic aromas of violets and wildflowers. The estate’s Bonnes-Mares stands out for its structured power, intense black fruit, and saline minerality, promising several decades of aging.

Musigny Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes

De Vogüé is Musigny; Musigny is de Vogüé. This emblematic cuvée represents the pinnacle of the estate’s excellence. Only vines aged forty years or more are selected for this legendary Grand Cru, of which fewer than a thousand cases are produced each vintage. The wine offers impressive depth of flavor and remarkable structure while retaining an airy, delicate texture on the palate. Satin-like elegance meets red fruit and lively minerality, creating a perfect harmony that defines the very soul of Chambolle-Musigny. These exceptional wines can age gracefully for thirty years or more, gradually revealing their full complexity.

Musigny Blanc Grand Cru

Musigny Blanc is one of Burgundy’s greatest rarities. The only white wine produced in the Musigny Grand Cru appellation, it comes from 0.65 hectares of Chardonnay planted on the upper slope, where limestone bedrock reaches the surface. After being declassified as Bourgogne Blanc for twenty-two consecutive years following replanting, the estate reinstated the Grand Cru appellation with the 2015 vintage, once the vines had reached what it considered the necessary age. This exceptional wine combines spices and rich fruit with a silky texture that seems to go on for miles. Expansive and savory, both finely etched and full-bodied, it has incredible persistence and shines through both its flavors and its tactile sensations, from talc to delicate bitterness on the finish, firmly rooted in the rock.
