Frequently Asked Questions

Château La Fleur-Pétrus occupies a singular position within the Pomerol appellation, thanks to an exceptional terroir situated on a clay-gravel plateau in the immediate vicinity of Pétrus. This illustrious proximity confers upon the estate its own distinctive identity: wines of great elegance, combining the richness and roundness characteristic of the dominant Merlot with a rare aromatic finesse. Unlike other properties in the appellation, Château La Fleur-Pétrus expresses a velvety texture and a floral freshness that make it immediately recognisable in a blind tasting.

Château La Fleur-Pétrus is a wine for ageing that deserves patience and attention. For powerful vintages such as 1990 or 2005, it is advisable to wait at least 10 to 15 years after the harvest before opening a bottle, in order to allow the tannins to refine and the bouquet to develop fully. At maturity, the wine reveals complex aromas of candied dark fruits, violet, truffle and gentle spices. Decanting for one to two hours is strongly recommended for young bottles, in order to release the full aromatic expression of the Merlot.

A mature Château La Fleur-Pétrus pairs admirably with elaborate gastronomic cuisine. Red meats in sauce, such as a beef fillet en croûte with truffles or a roasted milk-fed lamb with herbs, make for classic and timeless pairings. The wine also expresses itself with great elegance alongside game birds, duck with ceps, or a Bresse chicken in a creamy sauce. For cheese lovers, a pairing with a well-aged Comté or a perfectly ripe Brie de Meaux can reveal beautiful gustatory harmonies.

Among the domain's great historical successes, several vintages stand out in particular. The 1950, 1964 and 1975 are considered references from the domain's classic period. More recently, the years 1989, 1990 and 2000 produced wines of remarkable concentration and complexity, acclaimed by international critics. The 2005 vintage is often cited as one of the most accomplished of the château's modern era, offering a perfect balance between power and freshness.

The vineyard of Château La Fleur-Pétrus covers approximately 14 hectares, making it a modestly sized estate, typical of the great domaines of Pomerol. The grape variety composition is largely dominated by Merlot, which accounts for the vast majority of plantings, complemented by a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. This predominance of Merlot on clay-gravel soils is at the origin of the château's organoleptic signature: a generous richness on the palate, a silky texture and tannins of great finesse.

History of Château La Fleur-Pétrus

Founded several centuries ago, Château La Fleur-Pétrus takes its name from the lieux-dits Pétrus and La Fleur, located on the Pomerol plateau. The first official mention of the estate dates back to the 19th century, when the vineyard was still modest, producing around 5,000 bottles per year under the name "Pétrus-Lafleur". At the time, the estate belonged to the Constant family, who also owned Château Clinet.

In 1950, Jean-Pierre Moueix, a renowned négociant based in Libourne, acquired the estate, recognising the extraordinary potential of Pomerol's terroirs. This acquisition marked a decisive turning point for La Fleur-Pétrus, and under the stewardship of the Moueix family, the quality of the château's wines continued to grow. In 1994, the addition of 4 hectares of old vines from Château Le Gay further enhanced the power and complexity of the cuvées produced.

Today, it is Christian Moueix, son of Jean-Pierre, who leads the estate, perpetuating the family legacy and continuing the pursuit of excellence. The technical team is led by Éric Murisasco since 2007, supported by the renowned oenologist Jean-Claude Berrouet, consultant to the Moueix family.

The 2010 vintage of Château La Fleur-Pétrus received 98/100 from Robert Parker, while the 2018, 2009, and 2016 vintages each received 97/100, illustrating the quality of this great Pomerol wine.

Terroirs and Vines of Château La Fleur-Pétrus

Château La Fleur-Pétrus today spans 18.7 hectares, situated at an altitude ranging from 33 to 38 metres on the prestigious Pomerol plateau. This unique vineyard benefits from a mosaic of complex soils, ranging from deep ancient gravels to white clays, lending the estate's wines a distinctive identity and a harmonious balance between power and elegance.

The vineyard is predominantly planted with Merlot (91%), which brings suppleness and richness to the wines. Cabernet Franc (6%) contributes structure and complexity, while Petit Verdot (3%), recently integrated into the blend, adds a spiced touch and an additional dimension to the cuvées.

These vines, with an average age of 40 years, are cultivated in an environmentally responsible manner, with HVE 3 (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification. Sustainable farming practices, manual green work, and meticulous soil management all contribute to the authentic expression of the terroir in every bottle produced.

Winemaking at Château La Fleur-Pétrus

Winemaking at Château La Fleur-Pétrus reflects meticulous attention to every stage, from harvest to bottling. The grapes are harvested by hand, with a double sorting process — both manual and optical — to guarantee the impeccable quality of the selected berries. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, allowing precise temperature management and gentle extraction of aromas and tannins.

Macerations are extended and carefully managed to extract the full richness of the fruit without excess, bringing finesse and balance to the wines. Once fermentation is complete, the wines are aged for 16 to 18 months in oak barrels, of which 50% are new, contributing to their structure and ageing potential.

The integration of Petit Verdot into the blend since 2015 marks an important evolution in the style of La Fleur-Pétrus wines, bringing greater depth and complexity, while remaining true to the estate's characteristic elegance.
