Domaine du Marquis d'Angerville wines: buy at the best price

Founded in 1804, the Domaine Angerville only became the property of the d'Angerville family a century later in 1906. It was Marquis Sem d'Angerville who made the decision to bottle Burgundy wines in 1920, and he contributed greatly to the establishment of the AOC system during the 1930s. His son Jacques took over the estate in 1952 and went on to vinify 52 harvests at Domaine Marquis d'Angerville. Most recently, Guillaume d'Angerville succeeded his father in 2003 and today leads the estate, which has been managed using biodynamics since 2006. The 15 hectares of vineyard are distributed in a very concentrated manner to the south of Pommard and to the north of Meursault (with the vast majority located in Volnay).

History of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

The history of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville begins in 1507, when the Clos des Ducs, then the property of the Dukes of Burgundy, was mentioned in a royal inventory. This historic vineyard, located at the heart of Volnay, was acquired in 1804 by the Baron du Mesnil, marking the beginning of the family saga. His son, Eugène du Mesnil, inherited the estate and passed it on to his nephew, Sem, Marquis d'Angerville, a property devastated by the phylloxera crisis at the end of the 19th century. In 1906, Sem undertook the reconstruction of the vineyard, replanting fine Pinot Noir varieties, most notably the celebrated "Pinot d'Angerville" clone, recognised for its exceptional quality. A pioneer of estate bottling, Sem also contributed to the creation of the INAO, guaranteeing the authenticity of Burgundian appellations.

In 1952, Jacques d'Angerville took over, vinifying 52 vintages and consolidating the estate's worldwide reputation. An influential figure, he presided over several viticultural institutions and contributed to the classification of Burgundian crus. Upon his passing in 2003, his son Guillaume, the sixth generation, took the helm. Trained in oenology and inspired by family values, Guillaume converted the estate to biodynamics from 2006, completing this transition in 2009. Today, supported by a passionate team led by François Duvivier, Domaine Marquis d'Angerville continues to shine as an essential reference of Burgundy.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Domaine Marquis d'Angerville extends over 16.5 hectares, principally in Volnay, of which 11.5 hectares are in Volnay Premier Cru, representing 12% of the appellation's Premiers Crus. The vines, planted on marl-limestone soils, benefit from an ideal south-east exposure and a gradient that promotes optimal drainage. These conditions, combined with the shallow depth of the soils, force the roots to plunge deep, capturing the quintessence of the terroir. The Clos des Ducs, a historic Monopole of 2.15 hectares, is the jewel of the estate, with its calcareous, stony and clay soil, offering wines of rare complexity.

Beyond the Clos des Ducs, the estate cultivates prestigious plots such as Caillerets, Champans, Taillepieds, Fremiet, Mitans, Pitures and Clos des Angles, each expressing a unique facet of the Volnay terroir. Regional appellations, such as Bourgogne Rouge, Bourgogne Blanc, Bourgogne Passetoutgrain and Bourgogne Aligoté, round out this portfolio, as do plots in Meursault 1er Cru Santenots and Pommard 1er Cru Combes-Dessus. The conversion to biodynamics strengthens soil vitality, using natural preparations such as horn manure and silica, applied according to the lunar calendar, to produce more resilient vines and grapes of exceptional quality.

Winemaking at Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Winemaking at Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is guided by a philosophy of respect for the terroir and minimalism, aimed at revealing the purity of the grapes. Harvesting, exclusively by hand, is decided after rigorous monitoring of grape maturity, ensuring optimal balance. The bunches, harvested in small crates, are meticulously sorted and fully destemmed before fermentation. A cold pre-fermentation maceration precedes a natural fermentation of 15 to 18 days, with a controlled temperature rise (maximum 30–32°C). Gentle extraction, favouring pump-overs over punch-downs, preserves the noble tannins and colour stability.

The wines are then transferred by gravity into oak barrels, with a limited proportion of new wood (20% for the Premiers Crus) to preserve the delicacy of the aromas. Malolactic fermentation takes place in spring or summer, followed by 18 months of aging in barrels, adjusted according to the vintage. Before bottling, the wines are blended in tank for harmonisation, with fining or filtration carried out only when necessary. The estate remains committed to cork closures, collaborating with Trescases for rigorous quality control. This non-interventionist approach guarantees wines that are pure, elegant and true to their terroir.

The Cuvées of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay 1er Cru - Clos des Ducs

This 2.15-hectare Monopole, situated on a steep limestone slope, produces the estate's Fine Wine. Complex and harmonious, it offers expansive aromas of rose, cherry and redcurrant, with a firm and elegant structure. A wine for cellaring par excellence, it reaches its full potential after 10 years, or even longer for great vintages.

Volnay 1er Cru - Caillerets

Sourced from two plots totalling 0.46 hectares, this wine combines finesse and power on poor, reddish soil. Its distinctive minerality intertwines with fruity notes, offering a typically Volnay elegance. Ideal after 5 to 10 years of cellaring, this cru captivates with its remarkable bouquet.

Volnay 1er Cru - Champans

With 3.98 hectares, this emblematic cru expresses generosity and finesse. Its soils, poorer at the top of the slope and clay-rich at the bottom, yield a full-bodied wine with aromas of plum, liquorice and spices. More approachable earlier than others, it reaches its full potential after 5 to 10 years.

Volnay 1er Cru - Clos des Angles

This 1.07-hectare climat produces a delicate wine marked by bright red fruits. Less stony, its soil imparts a natural elegance, ideal after a few years in bottle, perfect for lovers of fine and approachable wines.

Volnay 1er Cru - Fremiet

Spanning 1.57 hectares, this marl-limestone cru offers a structured, suave and fruity wine with a saline finish. Located near Pommard, it remains true to the Volnay style and gains in brilliance after a few years of aging.

Volnay 1er Cru - Mitans et Pitures

These two plots (0.96 hectares in total) are blended to create an early-drinking and well-balanced Volnay Premier Cru. The fruity aromas and harmonious structure make it a versatile wine, enjoyable young or cellared for more than 10 years.

Volnay 1er Cru - Taillepieds

Spanning 1.07 hectares, this high-perched cru produces a refined wine with a serious and elegant structure. Its poor, stony soil imparts a unique finesse, often requiring a long aging period to reveal its complex bouquet.

Volnay Village - Grandchamps et Pluchots

Sourced from two plots totalling 0.5 hectares, this harmonious cuvée, without new oak, offers freshness and vivacity. Vinified with the same care as the Premiers Crus, it captivates with its lively character after a few years.

Meursault 1er Cru - Santenots

This 1.05-hectare white wine, planted with Chardonnay, expresses the minerality of the marly terroir. Dry, fruity, with notes of hazelnut, it offers a remarkable tension and can be enjoyed young or cellared.

Pommard 1er Cru - Combes-Dessus

Spanning 0.38 hectares, this full-bodied and generous cru, converted to biodynamics in 2006, reflects the Pommard style with a Volnay touch. It requires 3 to 8 years of cellaring depending on the vintage.

Bourgogne Rouge

Sourced from 1.85 hectares of clay soils, this vibrant and easy-drinking wine, produced from 30-year-old vines, is vinified with care. A fine introduction to the estate's red wines.

Bourgogne Passetoutgrain

A blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir across 0.3 hectares, this simple and approachable wine embodies Burgundian tradition with a touch of freshness.

Bourgogne Blanc

This 0.35-hectare Chardonnay offers citrus aromas and a crisp tension. Vinified with care, it reflects the quality of the regional appellations.

Bourgogne Aligoté

Sourced from 0.62 hectares, this taut and zesty wine, with its stimulating aromas, is perfect for discovering the Aligoté grape variety, emblematic of Burgundy.

Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is an essential reference for Burgundy wine lovers wishing to purchase exceptional Volnay wines. With a rich history, unique terroirs and respectful winemaking, every bottle tells the soul of Volnay. Let yourself be seduced by the elegance and purity of the wines of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, and add a touch of Burgundy to your cellar!
