Wines from Domaine M. Chapoutier: buy at the best price

The Chapoutier family is one of the tutelary figures of the wines of the Rhône Valley (along with Jaboulet and Guigal), and the family history of the Chapoutier estate begins in 1897 with the association of Rodolphe Delépine and Marius Chapoutier, forming the Delépine Chapoutier estate, which became Chapoutier et Cie in 1922, and finally in the 1950s M Chapoutier. The Chapoutier estate possesses exceptional terroirs; it is the largest owner of the legendary hill of Hermitage (with 30.6 ha), which allows it to offer a very comprehensive range of wines, from single-parcel selections that are true jewels of terroir expression, to various blended cuvées, always of a high standard.

History of Maison M. Chapoutier

The history of Maison M. Chapoutier is a captivating tale of family perseverance and innovation, beginning in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage, at the heart of the Rhône Valley. That year saw the creation of Maison Calvet et Compagnie, on the rue de l'Hermitage, a modest wine trading house that laid the foundations of a viticultural empire. In 1855, the premises passed into the hands of Octave Calvet and Frédéric Vogelgesang, a partnership that endured until 1878, before Rodolphe Delépine bought the whole business in 1883, injecting new accounting and commercial dynamism.

The decisive turning point came in 1897, when Marius Chapoutier partnered with Delépine to form the company Delépine et Chapoutier. The wines, already exported to Holland, Switzerland and Germany, gained in renown. In 1922, upon Delépine's retirement, Marius renamed the company Chapoutier et Cie, marking the family's official entry into history. A visionary, he acquired the La Ciboise property (1.15 ha) in 1928 and, the following year, built a new winery at the foot of the Hermitage hill. The death of Marius in 1937 left the reins to his son Marc, who, in 1955, gave the company its definitive name: M. Chapoutier.

The modern era opens in 1989 with Michel Chapoutier, then winemaker, who launched the first Sélections Parcellaires. At 26, in 1990, he took over the helm of the house and established biodynamics as a philosophical pillar, breaking with convention to favour the authentic expression of terroirs. Under his impetus, expansion accelerated: the first estate in Australia in 1998, in the Roussillon in 2000, in Portugal in 2007, in Alsace and Tain in 2009, in Lyon in 2014, in Beaujolais and Provence in 2015, in Spain in 2016, and in the Gard in 2017. Today, with Corinne, Mathilde (in commercial management) and Maxime (technical profile), the eighth generation perpetuates this tradition, making M. Chapoutier one of the most admired French wine houses in the world.

Terroirs and Vines of Maison M. Chapoutier

The terroirs of Maison M. Chapoutier form a living geological mosaic, where each parcel expresses a unique identity, cultivated exclusively in biodynamics since 1991. The cradle of the house, the Rhône Valley stretches over 250 km and 250 communes, from Vienne to Avignon, offering varied soils: the poor granites of the Hermitage (34 ha in ownership, the largest operator of the appellation), micaschists of Côte-Rôtie, rounded pebbles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and alluvial terraces of Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. The Hermitage, an ancient legend honouring the hermit Sterimberg since 1224, reveals four geological ages, from the Primary to the Quaternary, within its 136 hectares, producing reds, whites and straw wines.

Beyond the Rhône, Michel Chapoutier, a "soil prospector", has broadened his horizons: 63 ha of schists in the Roussillon for intense syrah, grenache and carignan; vines in Alsace for fresh expressions; estates in Provence and Beaujolais for Mediterranean diversity; and in the Gard (Valliguières and Montfrin) for deep clay soils. Internationally, Victoria in Australia brings a mineral purity to syrah grown beneath eucalyptus trees; the Portuguese Douro Valley, with its granites, magnifies the touriga nacional; and Spain adds Iberian accents. In total, 1,266 hectares worldwide, nourished by biodynamic practices inspired by Rudolf Steiner: lunar cycles, natural preparations (horn manure, silica), and draught horses to preserve the life of the soil.

Winemaking at Maison M. Chapoutier

Winemaking at Maison M. Chapoutier is an art of restraint, guided by Michel Chapoutier's conviction: "To correct the vintage is to lie." Minimalist and respectful, it favours indigenous yeasts, moderate sulphur, and a non-interventionist approach to let the terroir express itself without artifice — no chaptalization, acidifiers or exogenous yeasts. Manual harvesting, often carried out in several passes to balance ripeness and freshness, takes place at optimal maturity, with systematic destemming for the reds.

For the reds, fermentation in small concrete tanks maintains temperatures below 28°C, with macerations of 3 to 4 weeks; ageing lasts 16 to 20 months in barrels and foudres (15–20% new), promoting velvety tannins and complexity. The whites undergo whole-cluster pressing, light settling and fermentation in demi-muids or stainless steel, with ageing on full lees (sometimes with bâtonnage) for roundness and minerality. Adopted as early as 1991, biodynamics permeates every stage: observation of cosmic cycles for pruning and treatments, organic nutrients to revitalise the soils. The result: single-varietal or single-parcel wines, true to the vintage, 100% biodynamic, and accessible, with many cuvées priced under ten euros.

The cuvées of Maison M. Chapoutier

The single-parcel cuvées of Maison M. Chapoutier are faithful "photographs" of their terroirs.

Ermitage "L'Ermite" (White): Immerse yourself in the pure minerality of this exceptional white, where the Marsanne from the granite of the Hermitage reveals notes of vanilla and almonds.

Ermitage "Le Méal" (White): Discover the exotic breadth of this Marsanne cuvée, from the clay terraces of the Rhône: a complex white wine with accents of celery and toasted almonds, vinified in biodynamics for an irresistible freshness.

Ermitage "L'Ermite" (Red): The granitic Syrah of this iconic red expresses a velvety power, with smoky and peppery tannins: a single-parcel cuvée that captures the mystical soul of the Hermitage hill.

Ermitage "Le Pavillon" (Red): From the rocky Bessards, this intense Syrah unfolds aromas of blackberry and tobacco, for a wine built for ageing where minimalist winemaking reveals the mineral depth of the Rhône terroir.

Ermitage "Les Greffieux" (Red): Taste the exotic silkiness of this Syrah from glacial alluvial soils: kirsch black fruits and liquorice.

Ermitage "Le Méal" (Red): Powerful and jam-like, this Syrah cuvée from rounded pebbles offers velvety tannins and an entrancing smokiness, embodying the generosity of the southern Hermitage terroir.

Côte-Rôtie "La Mordorée" (Red): Spices and violet dance in this Syrah from the micaschists of Côte Brune and Blonde: an elegant and structured cuvée with an exceptional ageing potential of up to 75 years.

Côte-Rôtie "Neve" (Red): Saline virtue and graphite define this vertical Syrah from the northern part of the appellation, a pure single-parcel cuvée where indigenous yeast fermentation exalts the freshness of the rocky micaschists.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Barbe Rac" (Red): Centenary Grenache from rounded pebbles: herbs, chocolate and strawberry in a dense and fleshy cuvée, vinified in biodynamics for a remarkable length and legendary ageing potential.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Croix de Bois" (Red): Warm opulence of Grenache on red clay: blackberry jam and enveloping tannins in this emblematic cuvée, revealing the quintessence of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir.
