The family history of Domaine Chapoutier began in 1897, when Rodolphe Delépine joined forces with Marius Chapoutier to form Domaine Delépine Chapoutier. The History of Maison M. Chapoutier

The history of Maison M. Chapoutier is a captivating story of family perseverance and innovation that began in 1808 in Tain-l’Hermitage, in the heart of the Rhône Valley. That year saw the founding of Maison Calvet et Compagnie on rue de l’Hermitage, a modest wine merchant that laid the foundations for a wine empire. In 1855, the business passed into the hands of Octave Calvet and Frédéric Vogelgesang, whose partnership lasted until 1878. Rodolphe Delépine then bought the entire business in 1883, bringing new momentum to its accounting and commercial operations.

The decisive turning point came in 1897, when Marius Chapoutier joined forces with Delépine to form Delépine et Chapoutier. Its wines, already exported to the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany, grew in renown. In 1922, when Delépine retired, Marius renamed the company Chapoutier et Cie, marking the family’s official entry into its history. A visionary, he acquired the La Ciboise property (1.15 hectares) in 1928 and, the following year, built a new winery at the foot of the Hermitage hill. Marius’s death in 1937 left the reins to his son Marc, who gave the company its definitive name, M. Chapoutier, in 1955.

The modern era began in 1989 with Michel Chapoutier, then the winemaker, who launched the first Sélections Parcellaires. In 1990, at age 26, he took the helm of the house and made biodynamics a philosophical cornerstone, breaking with convention to favor an authentic expression of terroir. Under his leadership, expansion accelerated: the first estate in Australia in 1998, followed by Roussillon in 2000, Portugal in 2007, Alsace and Tain in 2009, Lyon in 2014, Beaujolais and Provence in 2015, Spain in 2016, and the Gard in 2017. Today, with Corinne, Mathilde (who leads sales) and Maxime (whose focus is technical), the eighth generation carries on this tradition, making M. Chapoutier one of the world’s most admired French wine houses.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Maison M. Chapoutier

The terroirs of Maison M. Chapoutier form a living geological mosaic, where each parcel expresses a unique identity and has been farmed exclusively using biodynamic methods since 1991. The Rhône Valley, the house’s birthplace, stretches 250 km across 250 communes, from Vienne to Avignon, offering varied soils: the poor granite soils of Hermitage (34 hectares owned, making the house the appellation’s largest grower), the mica schist of Côte-Rôtie, the rounded stones of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and the alluvial terraces of Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. Hermitage, steeped in the ancient legend of the hermit Sterimberg dating back to 1224, reveals four geological ages, from the Paleozoic to the Quaternary, across its 136 hectares, producing reds, whites and straw wines.

Beyond the Rhône, Michel Chapoutier, a "soil hunter", has broadened his horizons: 63 hectares of schist soils in Roussillon for intense Syrah, Grenache and Carignan; vines in Alsace for fresh expressions; estates in Provence and Beaujolais for Mediterranean diversity; and deep clay soils in the Gard, at Valliguières and Montfrin. Internationally, Australia’s Victoria brings mineral purity to Syrah grown beneath eucalyptus trees; Portugal’s Douro Valley, with its granite soils, showcases Touriga Nacional; and Spain adds Iberian character. In all, 1,266 hectares worldwide are tended using biodynamic practices inspired by Rudolf Steiner: lunar cycles, natural preparations (horn manure and silica), and draft horses to preserve soil life.

Winemaking at Maison M. Chapoutier

Winemaking at Maison M. Chapoutier is an art of restraint, guided by Michel Chapoutier’s conviction: "Correcting the vintage is lying." Minimalist and respectful, it favors native yeasts, moderate sulfur use and a hands-off approach that lets the terroir speak without artifice: no chaptalization, acidification or commercial yeasts. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, often in several passes to balance ripeness and freshness, and reds are systematically destemmed.

For the reds, fermentation in small concrete vats keeps temperatures below 28°C, with maceration lasting 3 to 4 weeks. Aging takes 16 to 20 months in barrels and large oak casks (15–20% new), fostering velvety tannins and complexity. The whites undergo whole-cluster pressing, light settling and fermentation in demi-muids or stainless steel, followed by aging on the full lees (sometimes with stirring) for roundness and minerality. Adopted as early as 1991, biodynamics informs every stage: observing cosmic cycles when pruning and applying treatments, and using organic nutrients to revitalize the soils. The result: single-varietal or single-parcel wines that reflect their vintage, are 100% biodynamic and remain accessible, with many cuvées priced under ten euros.
