Chapoutier

Wines from Domaine M. Chapoutier: buy at the best price

The Chapoutier family is one of the leading figures of the Rhône Valley wines (alongside Jaboulet and Guigal), and the family history of Domaine Chapoutier begins in 1897 with the partnership between Rodolphe Delépine and Marius Chapoutier, to form Domaine Delépine Chapoutier, which became Chapoutier et Cie as early as 1922, and finally in the 1950s M Chapoutier. Domaine Chapoutier possesses exceptional terroirs; it is the largest owner of the legendary Hermitage hill (with 30.6 ha), which allows it to offer a very comprehensive range of wines, from single-parcel selections that are true flagships of terroir expression, to various blended cuvées, always of a high standard.

History of Maison M. Chapoutier

The history of Maison M. Chapoutier is a captivating tale of family perseverance and innovation, beginning in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage, in the heart of the Rhône Valley. This year marks the creation of Maison Calvet et Compagnie, rue de l'Hermitage, a modest wine trading business that laid the foundations of a wine empire. In 1855, the premises passed into the hands of Octave Calvet and Frédéric Vogelgesang, a partnership that lasted until 1878, before Rodolphe Delépine bought the entire business in 1883, injecting new accounting and commercial dynamism.

The decisive turning point came in 1897, when Marius Chapoutier partnered with Delépine to form the company Delépine et Chapoutier. The wines, already exported to Holland, Switzerland and Germany, gained in renown. In 1922, upon Delépine's retirement, Marius renamed the company Chapoutier et Cie, marking the family's official entry into history. A visionary, he acquired in 1928 the property La Ciboise (1.15 ha) and, the following year, erected a new winery at the foot of the Hermitage hill. Marius's death in 1937 left the reins to his son Marc, who in 1955 personalized the company by giving it its definitive name: M. Chapoutier.

The modern era opened in 1989 with Michel Chapoutier, then winemaker, who launched the first Sélections Parcellaires. At 26, in 1990, he took over the house and established biodynamics as a philosophical pillar, breaking with conventions to favor authentic expression of terroirs. Under his impetus, expansion accelerated: first estate in Australia in 1998, in Roussillon in 2000, in Portugal in 2007, in Alsace and Tain in 2009, in Lyon in 2014, in Beaujolais and Provence in 2015, in Spain in 2016, and in the Gard in 2017. Today, with Corinne, Mathilde (in commercial management) and Maxime (technical profile), the eighth generation perpetuates this tradition, making M. Chapoutier one of the most admired French wine houses worldwide.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Maison M. Chapoutier

The terroirs of Maison M. Chapoutier are a living geological mosaic, where each parcel expresses a unique identity, cultivated exclusively in biodynamics since 1991. The birthplace of the house, the Rhône Valley extends over 250 km and 250 communes, from Vienne to Avignon, offering varied soils: poor granites of Hermitage (34 ha owned, the largest operator of the appellation), micaschists of Côte-Rôtie, rolled pebbles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and alluvial terraces of Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. Hermitage, an ancient legend honoring the hermit Sterimberg since 1224, reveals four geological ages, from primary to quaternary, in its 136 hectares, producing reds, whites and straw wines.

Beyond the Rhône, Michel Chapoutier, "soil hunter," has broadened the horizon: 63 ha of schist in Roussillon for intense syrah, grenache and carignan; vines in Alsace for fresh expressions; estates in Provence and Beaujolais for Mediterranean diversity; and in the Gard (Valliguières and Montfrin) for deep clay terroirs. Internationally, Australian Victoria brings mineral purity to syrah under eucalyptus; Portugal's Douro Valley, with its granites, magnifies touriga nacional; and Spain adds Iberian accents. In total, 1,266 ha worldwide, nourished by biodynamic practices inspired by Rudolf Steiner: lunar cycles, natural preparations (cow horn manure, silica), and draft horses to preserve soil life.

Vinifications at Maison M. Chapoutier

Vinification at Maison M. Chapoutier is an art of restraint, guided by Michel Chapoutier's conviction: "Correcting the vintage is lying." Minimalist and respectful, it favors indigenous yeasts, moderate sulfur, and non-intervention to let the terroir express itself without artifice, no chaptalization, acidifiers or exogenous yeasts. Manual harvests, often in several passes to balance maturity and freshness, are done at optimal maturity, systematic destemming for reds.

For reds, fermentation in small concrete vats maintains temperatures below 28°C, with macerations of 3 to 4 weeks; aging lasts 16 to 20 months in barrels and foudres (15-20% new), favoring velvety tannins and complexity. Whites undergo whole-bunch pressing, light settling, and fermentation in demi-muids or stainless steel, with aging on full lees (sometimes bâtonné) for roundness and minerality. Adopted as early as 1991, biodynamics permeates each stage: observation of cosmic cycles for pruning and treatments, organic nutrients to revitalize soils. Result: single-varietal or single-vineyard wines, faithful to the vintage, 100% biodynamic, and accessible, with many cuvées under ten euros.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Barbe Rac" (Red): Centenary Grenache from rolled pebbles: herbs, chocolate and strawberry in a dense and fleshy cuvée, vinified biodynamically for remarkable length and legendary aging.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Croix de Bois" (Red): Warm unctuousness of Grenache on red clay: blackberry jam and enveloping tannins in this emblematic cuvée, revealing the quintessence of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir.
