Some of the most renowned white wines in the Macon region, in Southern Burgundy
Located in Sologny, Burgundy (near Vergisson), and run by Jean-Marie GUFFENS, the Domaine Guffens Heynen covers 5.3 Ha of vines that produce white Burgundy wines that are amongst the most renowned of the Maconnais region. The Pouilly Fuisse Designation of Origin covers about 1 Hectare, divided in 3 specific terroirs (or plots): la Roche, les Croux, and les Crays. The Macon Pierreclos designation of origin covers a plot of about 3.3 Hectares called Chavigne, and located on slopes of up to 40%, on which it is therefore impossible to use machines and tractors. And finally, since 2008, the Saint Veran designation covers 3 plots of 1 hectare in total.
With no chemical treatments, no added yeast, and thanks to natural fermentation, these great white wines from the Maconnais are barrel-aged on lees and stirred regularly, then aged for about 18 months in barrels, before bottling without filtration. With his Macon Pierreclos, Jean-Marie Guffens Heynen has truly restored its former glory to an appellation that is sometimes being overlooked. These wines show to enthusiasts from all over the world that this terroir is capable of competing with the great white wines of the Cote de Beaune. Le Chavigne, Tri de Chavigne, and En Crazy wines are good example of this perfect work. They’ve been more and more successful and renowned in the Maconnais region. The rare bottles of Pouilly Fuisse are now monopolized by connoisseurs. This wine is an iconic Chardonnay from Burgundy. It is still possible to get some bottles in variegated cases, which shows the enormous quality of the Domaine Guffens Heynen's wines. As an example, the Macon Pierreclos Premier jus de Chavigne 2015 is generous, powerful, pure and precise, with very nice toasted oak notes (a wine that was matured in 25% new oak). The Saint Veran Premier jus 2015 is of exceptional amplitude, far exceeding the classic bottles of wine of his designation. Finally, the Pouilly Fuisse Premier jus des Hauts de Chavigne 2015 is of rare power and ultimate precision, the minerality of which perfectly counterbalances its rich texture. With such white wines, Chardonnay lovers will be in heaven, and those who can be patient will therefore let these bottles age for many years, in order to be able to drink them at their best. The price of the bottles is high but worth it, given the haute couture quality of the wines from the Domaine Guffens Heynen.
