This resulted in historically low yields, making 1956 Bordeaux wines exceedingly rare and sought-after today, exemplified by Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1956, rated 97/100 for its robust tannic structure and exceptional aging potential despite the hardships. In Burgundy, the severe frost delayed vine growth, followed by a rainy summer and a sunny yet insufficient September, yielding complex and elegant Pinot Noirs such as those from La Tâche 1956. Among the best 1966 Bordeaux wines, highlights include Château Latour in Pauillac, Château Palmer in Margaux, Château Montrose, and Château Figeac in Saint-Émilion—classics that combine power with finesse—while the Graves region produced remarkable dry whites and more modest sweet wines. In Burgundy, after a decade of capricious vintages, 1966 breathed new life into winemakers with vibrant reds bursting with fruit and elegance, such as Échezeaux and Richebourg from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or La Tâche, alongside supple, firm whites with rich acidity. After a mild winter without spring frosts and a harmonious flowering period, the summer of 1976 saw record-breaking temperatures unseen since 1945, promoting early grape ripening and the earliest harvests since 1945, starting as early as September 13 in Bordeaux under torrential rains from September 11 to 15 that swelled the berries without diluting their overall quality.
