Among the most remarkable vintages from Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg, the years 2015, 2010, and 2009 stand out for their exceptional quality, having benefited from ideal climatic conditions that ensured optimal grape ripening. These vintages are renowned for their great depth and aromatic complexity. Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 by Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret, following their marriage in 1928 and their settling in Vosne-Romanée in 1930. Modest in its origins, the domaine gradually expanded thanks to the passion and tenacity of the family. It was their only son Georges Mugneret, an ophthalmologist in Dijon, who enlarged the family vineyard through successive acquisitions of prestigious plots, notably Clos Vougeot Grand Cru in 1953, followed by Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru in 1977. Today, this wonderful family adventure continues across several generations.

History of Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

The Mugneret name has been common in Vosne-Romanée for many generations: it derives from meunier, the French word for miller, whose regional form is mugnier. The Gibourg name comes from the Saône plain and a family of grain growers. The family settled in the village in 1930, and the estate’s story begins, like many in Burgundy, with a marriage: Jeanne Gibourg married André Mugneret in 1928, and the couple founded Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg in 1933. They began producing Bourgogne Rouge, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges and already Echezeaux Grand Cru, from plots acquired with the house in 1934 and through a family inheritance received in 1938.

Their only son, Georges Mugneret, an ophthalmologist in Dijon, decided early on to continue his parents’ work alongside his medical career. He expanded the estate methodically: Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru in 1953, while he was still a medical student; a Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru in 1971; Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru in 1977; Les Vignes Rondes in 1982; and Les Feusselottes in Chambolle-Musigny in 1985. This gave rise to a second operation, Domaine Georges Mugneret. After his death in 1988, his wife Jacqueline and their daughter Marie-Christine, who left her career as a pharmacist, took up the mantle. Marie-Andrée joined them a few years later with a degree in enology. In 2009, the family’s two jointly held operations were brought together under a single name, Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the use of two separate labels.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

Across just eight hectares, the estate brings together a collection of exceptionally fine climats stretching from north to south along the Côte de Nuits. Its Vosne-Romanée village wine comes from five separate plots on clay and limestone soils, planted with vines often reaching seventy years of age. The Bourgogne Rouge comes from the Les Lutinières climat southeast of the village, on deep, alluvial soils rich in silt—an area classified under the Vosne-Romanée appellation until 1936.

Farther north, the Ruchottes-Chambertin plot occupies the best-situated part of the cru, above Mazis-Chambertin, where old vines grow on a near-surface limestone slab. Clos de Vougeot lies in the most sought-after upper part of the clos, which benefits from the best drainage. In Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges alike, each climat brings its own nuance, from the lighter, more limestone-rich soils of Les Feusselottes to the firmer soils of Les Vignes Rondes and Les Chaignots. Vineyard management relies on integrated pest management, traditional plowing and natural treatments used as sparingly as possible, with meticulous summer work carried out vine by vine, pass after pass.

Winemaking at Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

The winemaking is deliberately classic and straightforward, with no concessions to fashion. Grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected on a sorting table as soon as they arrive at the winery. They are then fully destemmed and placed in vats for four to five days of cold maceration. Alcoholic fermentation begins naturally, using only native yeasts—a deliberate choice by the Mugneret sisters that their father, who preferred selected yeasts, had not made. It takes place over about ten days in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with only a few punch-downs depending on the vat, to avoid over-extraction.

The total time in vat is fifteen to twenty days. After the wine is drawn off and the grapes are gently pressed in a pneumatic press, each cuvée goes into French oak barrels for eighteen months of aging, with rackings along the way. The proportion of new oak is carefully calibrated according to the wine’s classification: ten to twenty percent for village appellations, thirty to fifty percent for premiers crus and up to seventy percent for grands crus. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration to preserve the full textural complexity and aromatic purity for which the estate is renowned.

The Cuvées of Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

Bourgogne Les Lutinières : from the Les Lutinières climat southeast of Vosne-Romanée, on deep, silty soils, this Pinot Noir receives exactly the same treatment as the crus. The clean, inviting nose combines sour cherry, red currant and a floral hint. The palate is supple, fresh and generous, with mellow tannins. One of the Côte de Nuits’ finest entry-level wines, to drink within five to eight years.

Vosne-Romanée: a blend of five plots across the village, planted with vines often around seventy years old. The nose is remarkably pure, with sour cherry, red currant, sweet spice and violet. The palate stands out for its exceptional finesse, delicacy and generous fruit, supported by pleasing freshness and perfectly integrated tannins. Year after year, it is regularly cited among the appellation’s finest village wines.

Vosne-Romanée La Colombière: an exceptional single-plot cuvée from a family vineyard that had not been bottled separately since the 1957 vintage, the plot having been replanted around 1960. Its return with the 2017 vintage was hailed as an event. More concentrated and deeper than the village wine, it offers a dense palate, ripe dark fruit and a remarkably persistent finish.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vignes Rondes: acquired by Georges Mugneret in 1982, this climat in the north of the appellation, not far from Vosne, produces a firmer wine distinctly marked by red fruit. The structure is clear-cut, the tannins well defined and the finish saline. A serious premier cru that needs five to eight years to reveal its full generosity.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots: a historic premier cru of the estate, acquired in 1971. It differs from its neighbor in its darker berry notes of black currant and blackberry, exotic spices and livelier acidity that gives it added drive. The texture is fleshy, the mineral backbone deep, and the overall character highly distinguished.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes: purchased in 1985, this climat neighboring Les Amoureuses perfectly illustrates Chambolle’s charm and elegance. The wine unfolds silky red-fruit, rose and violet aromas around a clearly defined mineral core. Its delicate tannins and long floral finish make it one of the range’s most appealing cuvées.

Echezeaux Grand Cru: one of the family’s historic plots, present from the estate’s beginnings in 1933. A classic expression of this expansive Flagey grand cru, it combines black currant, black plum, woodsmoke, exotic spices and complex notes of forest floor. The palate brings together focus, structure, balance and length, with velvety red fruit that unfolds slowly. A wine with exceptional aging potential.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru: Georges Mugneret’s very first acquisition, in 1953, this plot occupies the upper part of the clos, with the best exposure and drainage, which explains the cuvée’s impressive consistency. The wine combines restrained power, richness and an elegance rare for the appellation, with notes of dark fruit, truffle and spice. Often considered one of the finest Clos de Vougeot wines produced today.

Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru: acquired in 1977, this grand cru comes from the best-situated part of the climat, above Mazis-Chambertin, where old vines grow in very stony soil. The wine beautifully expresses the terroir’s stony, truffled and slightly gamey character, with deep dark fruit, exceptional depth of flavor and a full body. Raspberry, orange zest, exotic spices and rose petals join this aristocratic bouquet over time. An absolute pinnacle of the Côte de Nuits that should be cellared for at least ten years.
