All wines from the Sancerre appellation in the Loire Valley

Located east of Bourges, on the banks of the Loire, the Sancerre vineyard covers 2,500 ha. It is planted with Sauvignon for white wines (75% of production), and with Pinot Noir for red wines. Situated on hillsides at around 200 m above sea level, the white wine vineyards are divided into 3 distinct areas: to the west, soils of clay, limestone, and Kimmeridgian marl yield powerful wines; in the centre, soils of gravel and limestone produce particularly delicate wines; and those near the town of Sancerre, with flint soils, give highly aromatic wines. All feature notes of redcurrant, citrus, flowers, and spices. Some late harvests are produced in favourable years. Where is the Sancerre appellation located?

The Sancerre appellation is located in the Val de Loire, on the left bank of the river, east of Bourges, on the south-eastern edge of the Paris Basin. It extends across fourteen communes in the Cher département: Sancerre, Bué, Chavignol (a hamlet of Sancerre), Verdigny, Sury-en-Vaux, Saint-Satur, Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre, Bannay, Crézancy-en-Sancerre, Menetou-Râtel, Montigny, Sainte-Gemme-en-Sancerrois, Thauvenay, Veaugues and Vinon. The vineyard covers approximately 3,000 hectares planted between 180 and 350 metres in altitude, on hillsides whose gradient sometimes exceeds 50%, making it one of the steepest vineyards in France. This vineyard faces Pouilly-Fumé on the opposite bank of the Loire and neighbours Menetou-Salon, Quincy, Reuilly and the Coteaux du Giennois, which together make up the Centre-Loire.

History of the Sancerre Appellation

The history of the Sancerre appellation stretches back to the earliest centuries of the Common Era, with Gregory of Tours already mentioning the existence of the vineyard in 582. The real surge in development came in the 12th century under the impetus of the Augustinian monks of the Abbey of Saint-Satur and the Counts of Sancerre. A reputed red wine made from pinot noir was produced at that time, exported via the Loire, and ranked among the most celebrated wines of the kingdom by Guillaume le Breton and Henri d'Andeli; Jean de Berry considered it the finest in France. During the Renaissance, surpluses were shipped to Flanders and England from the port of Saint-Thibault-sur-Loire.

The decisive turning point came with phylloxera, which devastated the vineyard from 1886 onwards. The winegrowers then replanted predominantly with sauvignon blanc, a variety perfectly suited to the local soils and climate, thereby reversing the region's identity. The Union viticole sancerroise was established in 1921 and obtained in 1931 a ruling reserving the name Sancerre exclusively for sauvignon and pinot noir. The AOC was recognised by the decree of 14 November 1936 for whites, then by that of 23 January 1959 for reds and rosés, which had until then been marketed as Coteaux du Sancerrois. Since the 2000s, the rise of single-vineyard work and organic viticulture has elevated the finest domaines to the level of the grands crus.

What are the terroirs of the Sancerre appellation?

The terroirs of the Sancerre appellation are divided into three main soil families, arranged from west to east. The terres blanches — Kimmeridgian argillaceous-calcareous marls rich in marine fossils — occupy the steepest slopes to the west and yield the most powerful, most structured wines with the greatest ageing potential. The caillottes and griottes, very stony hard Portlandian limestone, produce fruity, open and immediately appealing whites. The flint soils, or chailloux, present to the east near the Loire, give tense, smoky and floral wines. The climate is degraded oceanic, tempered by the foehn effect of the Pays Fort massif, which brings rainfall down to around 650 millimetres, and by the Loire, which acts as a thermal regulator.

This mosaic has given rise to genuine climates, now claimed on labels. In Chavignol, Les Monts Damnés, Le Cul de Beaujeu and La Grande Côte form a legendary trio, planted on vertiginous slopes of Kimmeridgian marl. In Bué, Le Chêne Marchand and Le Grand Chemarin are benchmarks on the caillottes, while Les Romains, Guigne-Chèvres, Chambrates and La Moussière, around Sancerre and Verdigny, illustrate the nuances of flint and limestone.

Which grape varieties are permitted in the Sancerre appellation?

Only two grape varieties are permitted in the Sancerre appellation. Sauvignon blanc is responsible for all the white wines: a second-epoch variety grown here near its northern limit, it expresses aromas of citrus, grapefruit, boxwood, white flowers and gunflint, with a naturally high acidity that gives structure to the wine. Pinot noir yields the reds and rosés, contributing cherry and morello cherry fruit, fine tannins and a floral thread closer to Burgundy than to the rest of the Loire. The specifications require a minimum planting density of 6,100 vines per hectare — ensuring competition between the plants and optimal ripeness — with yields capped at around 65 hectolitres per hectare for whites and 59 for reds.

What are the different styles of Sancerre wine?

Sancerre wines come in three colours with very distinct profiles. The whites, which predominate, are always dry: pale gold with green highlights, aromas of citrus and flowers, a palate that is both round and fresh, ending with a mineral salinity. Most are vinified and aged in stainless-steel tanks at low temperature to preserve aromatic purity, while the finest single-vineyard cuvées spend time in barrel, foudre or amphora for twelve to eighteen months, gaining in volume and complexity. The reds display a cherry colour, a floral and fruity bouquet, silky tannins and an elegance that improves year on year with climate warming. The rosés, produced by direct pressing or saignée, are dry, refined and pleasantly fruity.

In terms of food and wine pairings, the white forms with the crottin de Chavignol — produced within the appellation's own area — one of the most celebrated matches in French gastronomy. It also accompanies oysters, shellfish, river fish, asparagus and lightly spiced warm starters. The reds pair with roast poultry, duck, white meats and aged cheeses, while the rosés are well suited to aperitifs and summer cuisine.

What are the best vintages of Sancerre?

The best vintages of Sancerre over the past thirty years reflect the sensitivity of this northerly vineyard to spring frosts and hot summers. Among the great years are 2002, 2005, 2010 and 2014 — classic and well-balanced — followed by 2015, sunny and generous, and 2016, achieved under difficult conditions but very successful. 2018 combined quantity and ripeness, 2019 delivered whites of concentrated elegance despite frost, 2020 stood out for its precocity and preserved freshness, 2022 for a profile that is both sunny and balanced despite the drought, and 2023 for a return to fruit and tension.

On the other hand, 2013 proved late and austere, 2021 returned to a light and tangy style after a year of frost and cool conditions, and 2024 will remain one of the most complex vintages in the region, marked by exceptional mildew pressure and a hailstorm over part of the vineyard in July. Today, the tank-fermented whites from the three most recent vintages are drinking with pleasure, while the single-vineyard 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022 wines still merit cellaring.

What are the best domaines in the Sancerre appellation?

The leading domaines of the Sancerre appellation have built their reputation on single-vineyard work and controlled yields. Domaine Alphonse Mellot, founded in 1513 and run by the nineteenth generation, stands as a flagship estate: fifty hectares in biodynamics, an entirely single-vineyard range and benchmark cuvées such as La Moussière, Edmond, Les Romains and Génération XIX, sourced from vines approaching a century old, to which are added the pinot noirs En Grands Champs and La Demoiselle, considered among the greatest reds of the Loire. Domaine Henri Bourgeois, based in Chavignol, has grown from two hectares in 1950 to around seventy today: its cuvées Côte des Monts Damnés, Jadis, d'Antan and Étienne Henri each illustrate a distinct soil type, and the family has exported its vision of terroir as far as New Zealand with Clos Henri.

Domaine Vacheron, the first domaine de l'appellation to be certified biodynamic in 2006, brought about a cultural revolution under the impetus of Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent: its six single-vineyard whites — including the emblematic Les Romains on flint and the saline Guigne-Chèvres — and its red Belle Dame have demonstrated that this vineyard could produce exceptional crus. Domaine Claude Riffault, in Sury-en-Vaux, is among the pioneers of organic farming and wins over enthusiasts with the definition of its lieux-dits Les Boucauds, Les Chasseignes and Les Denisottes.

Finally come the most sought-after signatures, produced in tiny volumes. Gérard Boulay, in Chavignol, crafts whites of remarkable precision from the Kimmeridgian marls of Les Monts Damnés, Clos de Beaujeu and the cuvée Oriane. The cousins François Cotat and Pascal Cotat, also in Chavignol, have achieved cult status with their late-harvest renditions of Les Monts Damnés, Les Culs de Beaujeu and La Grande Côte — atypical wines in their youth but capable of ageing for a decade and more. Domaine Edmond Vatan represents the pinnacle of rarity: approximately one hectare in Les Monts Damnés, a few thousand bottles per year, and a Clos la Néore that has become the most contested Sancerre on the market. Domaine Didier Dagueneau, celebrated for its pouilly-fumés, rounds out this picture with a confidential and highly regarded Mont Damné.

How long should a Sancerre be kept?

How long a Sancerre keeps depends on its colour and the terroir from which it comes. Rosés are best enjoyed within two years, on the fruit. Tank-fermented whites, particularly those born on caillottes, are at their best between one and four years, when their aromatic expression is at its most vibrant. Whites from terres blanches and flint soils — especially single-vineyard wines aged in barrel — need three to five years to reveal themselves and evolve superbly over ten to fifteen years, developing notes of honey, candied fruit and white truffle. Pinot noir reds are drunk between three and eight years, with the finest old-vine cuvées holding without difficulty for ten to fifteen years.

To preserve this potential, store bottles on their side, in darkness and away from vibrations, at between 11 and 13 degrees, with a humidity level of 70 to 75%. Serve the whites between 10 and 12 degrees — avoid excessive cold, which would mask the salinity — and the reds between 15 and 16 degrees. Decanting is not necessary for tank-fermented whites, but an aeration of twenty to thirty minutes benefits the great single-vineyard wines that are still closed, as well as young pinot noirs.
