Domaine Ostertag wines: buy at the best price

Located in the town of Epfig in the Bas-Rhin, the estate now run by André Ostertag is one of the must-know domains in the Alsatian wine region. Founded in 1960 by Adolphe Ostertag, it was from the 1980s onwards that his son, André Ostertag, began shaping the vineyard as we know it today. With a planted area of 14.5 hectares, of which 13.8 are white (45% Riesling, 17% Gewurztraminer, 15% Pinot Gris, 15% Sylvaner, 6% Pinot Blanc and 2% Muscat) and 0.7 red (100% Pinot Noir). The vineyard hectares are spread across 5 villages, with 63% in Epfig, 30% in Nothalten, 4% in Ribeauvillé, 2% in Itterswiller and 1% in Albé, some of which are located on named plots such as Zellberg, Fronholz, Heissenberg, the Grand Cru Muenchberg and the Clos Mathis on the Hagel de Ribeauvillé.

Since 1998, André Ostertag has cultivated the entire estate using biodynamic farming, adopting an in-depth approach to the vine as an "interpreter of the interactions between sky and earth." Despite the mosaic of nuances across the different cuvées produced, the wines all possess a radiant energy, always harmonious and of great depth. Among the domain's iconic cuvées, the Riesling from the lieu-dit Fronholz is one of the great wines recognized by lovers of Alsatian wines, particularly from the Bas-Rhin. At the top of the Epfig hill, on a terroir favored by excellent sunshine, with a soil of quartz and silica and a subsoil of clay, the Riesling Fronholz cuvée displays a precision and sublime elegance marked by a great minerality. Discreet in its youth, the Riesling Fronholz is a wine of great aging potential that can be enjoyed up to 20 years from now. The Grand Cru Muenchberg, dedicated primarily to the Riesling grape variety, is a plot located at the top of the Monks' Mountain, south-facing, benefiting from a soil of pink sandstone and volcanic sediments. The Riesling Grand Cru Muenchberg from Domaine Ostertag is a wine marked by a singular nobility whose length on the palate is remarkable. With an aging potential of over 20 years, the Riesling Grand Cru Muenchberg is one of the great white wines of Alsace to acquire for your personal cellar. From the same Grand Cru Muenchberg plot, the Pinot Gris A360P cuvée offers a wine with an atypical profile. Indeed, this cuvée, aged in Vosges oak barrels, was refused the name "Muenchberg Grand Cru" by approval committees because the atypical profile of the wine, marked by wood, diverged from those produced from this 17-hectare Grand Cru plot. As a result, André Ostertag named his cuvée A360P, which is the cadastral code for the Pinot Gris. The Pinot Gris A360P cuvée offers on the nose a bouquet of complex aromas including yellow fruits, rose, spices, and a delicately woody note. On the palate, lively at the attack, endowed with a remarkable balance and elegance, it surprises with its length marked by this so distinctive woodiness.
