Saumur

All wines from the Saumur appellation in Loire

Appellation around the city of the same name, which produces quality sparkling wines (Saumur mousseux) made from Chenin and Chardonnay and sometimes Sauvignon, as well as still red wines, rosés and whites. The whites, based on Chenin, are produced on limestone soils, are of great finesse and beautiful minerality, and their high acidity level gives them great aging potential. The reds, mainly from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pineau d'Aunis, are relatively light and fruity. The finest are found in the Saumur-Champigny zone, on a tuffeau plateau, and are richer and more tannic. Among the best producers, let us mention Antoine Sanzay, Bobinet, Château du Hureau, Château Yvonne, Clos de l'Ecotard, Domaine des Roches Neuves, Domaine du Collier, Guiberteau, La Porte Saint Jean, and of course Filliatreau and Foucault (Clos Rougeard).

Where is the Saumur appellation located?

The Saumur appellation is located in the Val de Loire, at the eastern tip of Anjou, on the left bank of the Loire, at the boundary with Touraine. The still wine area covers around twenty communes in Maine-et-Loire (Saumur, Parnay, Turquant, Montsoreau, Varrains, Le Coudray-Macouard, Montreuil-Bellay, Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, Saint-Just-sur-Dive, Le Puy-Notre-Dame), to which nine communes in the Vienne and two in the Deux-Sèvres are added, with the sparkling wine area being considerably larger. The vineyard covers around 2,200 hectares in production, of which approximately 550 hectares are red, 390 white, 80 rosé, and 1,190 sparkling. This vineyard adjoins Saumur-Champigny, Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame, and Coteaux de Saumur, as well as Anjou to the west and Chinon, Bourgueil, and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil on the opposite bank.

History of the Saumur Appellation

The history of the Saumur appellation begins with the abbeys and the counts of Anjou, who shaped the vineyard from the Middle Ages, before the accession of Henry II Plantagenet to the throne of England in 1154 opened up northern markets. The decisive turning point came in the 16th century with Dutch merchants: appreciating the suitability of these wines for maritime transport, they established chenin's reputation well beyond the region, and a distinction was drawn between wines for keeping known as "pour la mer" and those destined for Paris. Cabernet franc, known locally as breton, was subsequently established, promoted in the 19th century by the winegrower Antoine Cristal in Parnay.

In 1811, Jean-Baptiste Ackerman mastered the second fermentation in bottle and launched the production of fine bubbles, made possible on a large scale by the immense tuffeau cellars. The vineyard reached 10,500 hectares in 1827. Winegrowers formed unions as early as 1910 and obtained AOC recognition by the decree of 14 November 1936 for whites and reds, followed by 31 December 1957 for sparkling wines and 9 May 1964 for rosés. The Puy-Notre-Dame denomination was introduced in 2007 to distinguish more structured reds, while the conversion to organic and biodynamic farming has profoundly renewed the appellation over the past twenty years.

What are the terroirs of the Saumur appellation?

The terroirs of the Saumur appellation rest on tuffeau, the Turonian chalk that gives the area its nickname of "Anjou blanc" and distinguishes it from the schists of the "Anjou noir" of the Angevin hinterland. The soils are rendzinas and more or less deep calcareous brown soils, sometimes covered on the upper slopes by Senonian or Eocene sands and clays: they warm up quickly, drain well, and offer a moderate water reserve that keeps vigour in check. The relief, carved by the Loire, the Thouet, and the Dive, draws hillsides ranging from 40 to 110 metres in altitude with varied aspects. The climate is oceanic, tempered by a föhn effect coming from the Mauges: only 550 to 600 millimetres of rain fall per year.

Several sectors stand as unofficial crus. The butte de Brézé, with its historic clos cited as far back as the Renaissance, is the region's great chenin terroir. The Turonian cuesta of Parnay, Turquant, and Souzay-Champigny overlooks the river, while the buttes du Puy-Notre-Dame and the slopes of the Dive, further south, yield dense reds. Beneath the plots run the galleries carved out to extract stone, now serving as ageing cellars with constant temperature and hygrometry.

What grape varieties are permitted in the Saumur appellation?

The grape varieties permitted in the Saumur appellation vary according to colour. The still whites are made from 100% chenin, also known as pineau de la Loire, a late-ripening variety that provides fine acidity, aromas of white flowers, apple, and quince, and a remarkable ageing potential. The reds are based on cabernet franc as the main variety, complemented by cabernet sauvignon and pineau d'Aunis up to a maximum of 30% of the blend, the latter contributing a characteristic peppery note. The rosés combine cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. The fine bubbles are open to a much broader palette of ten grape varieties, with a minimum of 60% chenin in the white cuvée and 60% cabernet franc in the rosé cuvée, with sauvignon capped at 10%.

What are the different styles of Saumur wines?

Saumur wines are presented in four complementary styles. The dry whites, pale yellow in colour with green highlights, play on floral and fruity delicacy in the cellar cuvées, and on depth and salinity in the great hillside chenins, aged in barrel, in large oak casks, or in amphora for twelve to twenty-four months. The reds display a ruby colour, a nose of strawberry, raspberry, and cherry lifted by spices and smoky notes, and supple tannins: the clay-limestone plateau cuvées, particularly in Puy-Notre-Dame, gain in structure and dark fruit. The rosés, dry and light, come from deeper soils that preserve freshness.

The fine bubbles, aged for a minimum of nine months on lees, offer a fine bead and aromas of white fruit, almond, and pastry. In terms of food and wine pairings, the white accompanies pike-perch in beurre blanc, Saumur mushrooms, and goat's cheeses; the red pairs with rillauds, roast poultry, and, for the aged cuvées, game birds; the rosé and the brut are suited to aperitifs, fouées, and iodine-rich starters.

What are the best vintages of Saumur?

The finest vintages from Saumur over the past thirty years follow the rhythm of cabernet franc and chenin, two grape varieties sensitive to the Loire climate. Among the great reference years are 2005, 2009, and 2010, sunny and well-balanced, followed by the fine series of 2014, 2015, and 2016 — the last of these reduced by April frost but superb in quality. 2018 stands out for its generosity and ripeness, 2019 and 2020 for their sunny concentration, 2022 for an unexpected balance despite the drought, and 2023 for a return to Loire freshness among winegrowers who sorted carefully.

Conversely, 2011, 2012, and 2013 require careful selection, 2017 suffered from frost, and 2021, marked by a severe frost and a cool summer, produced light wines to be drunk quickly. Today, the reds from 2014 to 2018 and the whites from 2015 to 2019 are at their peak, while the single-vineyard chenins from 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023 still merit several more years in the cellar.

What are the best estates of the Saumur appellation?

The finest estates of the Saumur appellation form a small circle that has elevated this vineyard to the ranks of the great Loire wines. Le Clos Rougeard, run by brothers Charly and Nady Foucault, is the absolute reference: a pioneer of organic farming in the Saumurois, committed to long barrel ageing, it raised its cuvées Le Bourg and Les Poyeux, as well as its chenin from Brézé, to the status of collectible wines — a standing confirmed by its acquisition by the Bouygues family in 2017 and by its prices at auction. Le Domaine Guiberteau, led by Romain Guiberteau, a former student of the Foucaults, has established itself over two decades as the new benchmark for chenin from Brézé, with the Clos des Carmes, the Clos de Guichaux, and the Brézé cuvée — sought-after wines allocated in strictly limited quantities.

The Domaine du Collier, founded in 1999 in Chacé by Antoine Foucault, son of Charly, carries on the family tradition of barrel ageing that can reach up to three years: its Charpentrie, in both white and red, ranks among the rarest and most sought-after bottles in the appellation. Le Château Yvonne, in Parnay, taken over in 2007 by Mathieu Vallée, produces dense chenins and refined cabernet francs across sixteen organically farmed hectares, including Le Beaumeray, made from Clos Rougeard massal selections.

The Domaine des Roches Neuves, which Thierry Germain converted to biodynamics, made its name with L'Insolite, an old-vine chenin that has become a classic, and with its cabernet franc cuvées Terres Chaudes and La Marginale, whose refinement has earned international acclaim. Antoine Sanzay, based in Varrains, embodies the next generation with highly sought-after, small-production cuvées made from hillside terroirs.

How long should a Saumur wine be kept?

The ageing potential of a Saumur wine depends closely on its colour and cuvée level. Rosés should be drunk within two years, on the fruit. Fine brut bubbles are best enjoyed between two and five years after purchase, with prestige cuvées aged for a long time on lees holding easily for eight to ten years. Entry-level whites are at their best between three and five years, while the great single-vineyard chenins from Brézé or Parnay need five years in the cellar and evolve magnificently over ten to twenty years. Fruity reds open up between three and six years; hillside cuvées, old-vine bottlings, and Puy-Notre-Dame wines require eight to twenty years depending on the vintage.

To preserve this ageing potential, store the bottles on their side, away from light and vibrations, between 11 and 13 degrees, with a humidity level of 70 to 75% — conditions naturally replicated by the tuffeau cellars of the Saumurois. At tasting, serve the whites between 11 and 13 degrees and the reds between 15 and 16 degrees. Decanting for thirty minutes to one hour benefits young reds and great chenins that are still closed, while older vintages need only a careful opening just before serving.
