Wines from Domaine Méo Camuzet: buy at the best price

In the 1920s, Etienne Camuzet acquired part of the vines of the Château de Clos Vougeot. Etienne Camuzet's daughter, Maria Noirot (who died without children), then passed the estate on to her nephew Jean Méo in 1959, and the estate became known as Méo Camuzet from 1981 onwards. The Méo Camuzet estate is located in Vosne Romanée and encompasses many appellations, including the grands crus: Corton (Clos Rognet, La vigne au Saint, Perrières), Richebourg, Echezeaux, Clos Vougeot and the 1ers crus: Vosne Romanée (Brulées, Chaumes, Cros Parentoux), Nuits St Georges (Argillas, Boudots, Murgers, Perrières), Chambolle Musigny (Cras, Feusselottes) and Fixin Clos du Chapitre

History of Domaine Méo-Camuzet

The history of Domaine Méo-Camuzet begins in the 17th century in the village of Selongey, where the Méo family prospered as winegrowers and coopers. From the 19th century onwards, the Méo family turned to public service, with figures such as the great-grandfather who was a schoolteacher, the grandfather who was an engineer, and Jean Méo, father of the current owner, who held prominent political positions, notably in the European Parliament. However, it is through the viticultural heritage of Marcelle Lamarche-Confuron, Jean Méo's mother, that the family became rooted in Vosne-Romanée.

A decisive turning point came with Etienne Camuzet, a cousin of Jean Méo's grandmother. An influential winegrower and deputy of the Côte d'Or, Etienne played a key role in the creation of the Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée in 1919 and acquired the Château du Clos de Vougeot in 1920. At his death in 1946, his daughter Maria inherited the estate, which she bequeathed in 1959 to Jean Méo. Despite an intense Parisian career, Jean preserved the viticultural heritage with the help of sharecroppers, including the legendary Henri Jayer.

In 1984, Jean-Nicolas Méo, Jean's son, took over the estate at just 20 years of age. Trained in oenology at the University of Burgundy and in economics at the University of Pennsylvania, he learned the subtleties of vine-growing and winemaking from Henri Jayer and Christian Faurois. Under his leadership, the estate rose to the summit of the Burgundian hierarchy, becoming a worldwide reference for its exceptional wines.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Méo-Camuzet

Domaine Méo-Camuzet possesses an exceptional viticultural heritage, with plots in the most prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits. These terroirs, meticulously cultivated, produce wines that express the diversity of Burgundian soils with rare precision. Here is an overview of the main vineyards:

Vosne-Romanée: The heart of the estate, with plots in mythical climats such as the Grand Cru Richebourg, the Premier Cru Aux Brûlées, Les Chaumes, and the celebrated Cros Parantoux, immortalized by Henri Jayer.

Clos de Vougeot: Located at the foot of the château, this plot of nearly 3 hectares benefits from a stony soil that encourages early ripening of the grapes.

Corton: The plots of Corton Clos Rognet, Corton La Vigne au Saint, and Corton Les Perrières produce robust and structured wines with strong aging potential.

Echézeaux: A plot in the climat Les Rouges du Bas, at the upper boundary of the appellation, yields rich and complex wines.

Nuits-Saint-Georges: The Premiers Crus Aux Murgers and Aux Boudots offer powerful wines, marked by spicy notes and beautiful roundness.

Clos Saint-Philibert: The estate's only white wine, made from chardonnay planted in Flagey-Echezeaux, it stands out for its freshness and minerality.

Viticulture at Domaine Méo-Camuzet is guided by respect for the terroir and natural balances. Practices include careful pruning to limit yields, manual interventions to aerate the bunches, and a demanding biological approach, with frequent plowing and the use of horses in difficult plots.

Winemaking of Domaine Méo-Camuzet

The winemaking philosophy of Domaine Méo-Camuzet rests on minimal intervention to preserve the authentic expression of the terroir. Each step, from harvest to bottling, is carried out with meticulous precision:

Manual harvest: The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted, first in the vineyard if necessary, then on a sorting table at the winery, eliminating 5 to 20% of the berries depending on the vintage.

Maceration and fermentation: The grapes macerate cold (15°C) for 3 to 5 days before natural fermentation. Temperatures are controlled to not exceed 34–35°C, preserving freshness and fruit. Pump-overs precede punch-downs at the end of fermentation to release silky tannins.

Aging: The wines are aged in barrels, with a proportion of new barrels adapted to each cuvée (for example, Richebourg dominates in new barrels, while Clos Saint-Philibert requires a gentler aging). Aging lasts an average of 17 months, followed by blending in a vat before bottling.

Bottling: Carried out by gravity, without fining or filtration, this step respects the raw material, guaranteeing living and expressive wines.

This approach, inherited from Henri Jayer and refined by Jean-Nicolas Méo, prioritizes finesse and balance, while enhancing the personality of each climat and vintage.
