Château Calon Ségur owes its famous nickname to an anecdote attributed to Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, owner of the estate in the 18th century. Although he also owned the prestigious Château Latour and Château Margaux, he is said to have confided: "I make wine at Latour and at Lafite, but my heart is at Calon." It is in tribute to this declaration that the label of Château Calon Ségur has since borne a red heart, which has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Saint-Estèphe and the entire Médoc.

Among the most remarkable historic vintages of Château Calon Ségur, enthusiasts and connoisseurs regularly cite the 1953, considered one of the greatest wines produced in Saint-Estèphe in the 20th century, as well as the 1982, a legendary vintage for the entire Médoc. The 1996 and 2000 are also highly sought after for their perfect balance between tannic power and aromatic elegance. The 1959 and 1961 frequently appear on the lists of collectors passionate about the estate's history.

Le Marquis de Calon is the second wine of Château Calon Ségur. It is crafted from younger plots or lots not selected for the grand vin during the rigorous plot-by-plot selection carried out each year. More accessible in terms of price and approachability, it shares the same exceptional terroir and the same winemaking methods as the first wine, but offers a softer profile and a shorter drinking window. It is an excellent entry point to discover the estate's style without waiting many years of cellaring.

Château Calon Ségur is classified as a 3rd Grand Cru Classé in the famous official classification of Médoc wines established in 1855. It is one of the most northerly estates in this classification, located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. This prestigious status gives it a prime place among the great Bordeaux references, alongside the other classified growths of the left bank of the Gironde.

Château Calon Ségur is based primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, the king grape variety of the Médoc, which represents the majority of the estate's plantings. It is complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which bring roundness and aromatic complexity to the final blend. This varietal profile gives rise to age-worthy wines characterised by a firm tannic structure, aromas of dark fruits, cedar and spices, typical of the clay and gravel terroir of Saint-Estèphe.

The terroir of Château Calon Ségur is one of the most singular in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The estate extends over approximately 55 hectares in a single block, a rarity in the Médoc, on soils composed of Garonne gravels mixed with deep clays, resting on a limestone subsoil. This composition gives the wines a pronounced minerality, a natural freshness and a remarkable ageing potential. The proximity of the Gironde estuary also plays an essential regulatory role on the vineyard's microclimate.

History of Château Calon Ségur

Château Calon Ségur has its roots in the Middle Ages. As early as 1147, archives mention the existence of this estate, then owned by Monseigneur de Calon, an influential bishop. The estate became in the 18th century the property of Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, nicknamed the "Prince of Vines". He, who also owned the prestigious châteaux Lafite and Latour, declared: "I make my wine at Lafite and at Latour, but my heart is at Calon." This quote would inspire the current label of Calon Ségur bottles, adorned with an emblematic heart, a symbol of the marquis's unwavering attachment to this land.

Classified as a Third Growth in the famous 1855 classification, the estate passed through the centuries under the management of the Gasqueton family, until 2012, when it was acquired by the insurance group Suravenir, a subsidiary of Crédit Mutuel Arkéa. Since this acquisition, the estate has benefited from major investments, notably under the leadership of Vincent Millet, technical director, who has been working to modernise the infrastructure while preserving the unique character of the wines of Calon Ségur.

The 2020 and 2018 vintages of Château Calon-Ségur were awarded Robert Parker scores of 97/100, reflecting the elegance and power of this classified growth from Saint-Estèphe.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Calon Ségur

What truly sets Château Calon Ségur apart is the exceptional nature of its terroir situated on the left bank. Although its elevation does not exceed 13 metres, the estate benefits from a pronounced relief and slopes that encourage optimal rainwater drainage. The soils consist of a thick layer of quaternary gravel, deposited by the river over time, resting on a clay subsoil. This combination of gravel and clay, unique in the region, contributes to the structure and finesse of the wines produced here.

The 55-hectare vineyard, in a single contiguous block and entirely enclosed by a wall, is planted with the four classic Médoc grape varieties: 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon, the king grape of the appellation, stands out particularly in the blend, with a replanting programme that will bring it to 70% by 2032. The average age of the vines is 22 years, endowing the grapes with aromatic richness and rare depth.

The geographical situation of the estate, close to the Gironde estuary, creates a microclimate favourable to the slow and regular ripening of the grapes. The various plots, spread across gravel outcrops and gentle slopes, benefit from ideal exposure to ensure quality harvests, often among the last in the region due to the coolness of the terroirs.

Vinification at Château Calon Ségur

The vinification process at Château Calon Ségur reflects the meticulous attention paid to every detail in order to best express the potential of the terroir. The harvest is carried out by hand, with rigorous sorting of the bunches at several stages, so as to select only the ripest and healthiest grapes. Gravity is used to convey the berries to the vats, thus minimising any risk of oxidation or alteration.

The modern vat room, comprising 75 stainless steel tanks of varying capacities, allows for plot-by-plot and intra-plot vinification. Each batch of grapes is thus vinified separately, according to its characteristics, in order to make the most of each terroir. Fermentation is controlled at a precise temperature, and a co-inoculation technique (simultaneous fermentation of yeasts and lactic acid bacteria) optimises the conversion of sugars and acids into alcohol, while preserving the freshness and balance of the wine.

The aging takes place in 100% new French oak barrels for the Fine Wine, for 18 to 20 months. This aging method, respectful of the raw materials, allows for a harmonious integration of the wood tannins with those of the grape, offering wines that are both powerful, elegant and of great finesse.

Château Calon Ségur offers three main cuvées, each reflecting a unique expression of the Saint-Estèphe terroir.

The Fine Wine of Calon Ségur

The Fine Wine of Calon Ségur is a wine of rare elegance, a true reflection of its terroir. Composed predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon, it embodies power, finesse and longevity. Recent vintages, marked by great fruit maturity, reveal on the nose intense aromas of dark fruits, accompanied by woody and spiced notes, revealing an impressive tannic structure. On the palate, the wine shows generosity, with a silky texture and a long finish, offering a perfect balance between freshness and complexity.

Le Marquis de Calon Ségur

Le Marquis de Calon Ségur, the second wine of the estate, is distinguished by a blend with a higher proportion of Merlot (up to 75%), giving it an immediate roundness and approachability. This wine is designed to offer more accessible pleasure in its youth, while retaining beautiful aromatic depth. The aromas of ripe red fruits, the velvety texture and the subtly oaked finish make it a perfect wine for more relaxed tastings, while echoing the elegance of the Fine Wine.

Le C de Calon Ségur

Formerly known as "La Chapelle de Calon", then "Le Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur", le C de Calon Ségur is the third wine of the estate. Sourced primarily from young vines, this wine is distinguished by its freshness and vibrant fruitiness. With a balanced blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is designed to be enjoyed young, offering a beautiful expression of the Calon terroir in a more accessible, ready-to-drink style. It is a convivial wine, ideal for informal occasions.

Château Capbern

Château Capbern, another property of Calon Ségur, also offers wines of great quality, sourced from the same exceptional terroirs of Saint-Estèphe.
