Château Calon Ségur owes its famous nickname to an anecdote attributed to Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, owner of the estate in the 18th century. Although he also owned the prestigious Château Latour and Château Margaux, he is said to have confided: "I make wine at Latour and at Lafite, but my heart is at Calon." It is in tribute to this declaration that the label of Château Calon Ségur has since borne a red heart, which has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Saint-Estèphe and the entire Médoc.

Among the most remarkable historic vintages of Château Calon Ségur, enthusiasts and connoisseurs regularly cite the 1953, considered one of the greatest wines produced in Saint-Estèphe in the 20th century, as well as the 1982, a legendary vintage for the entire Médoc. The 1996 and 2000 are also highly sought after for their perfect balance between tannic power and aromatic elegance. The 1959 and 1961 frequently appear on the lists of collectors passionate about the estate's history.

Le Marquis de Calon is the second wine of Château Calon Ségur. It is crafted from younger parcels or lots not selected for the Fine Wine during the rigorous parcel-by-parcel selection carried out each year. More accessible in terms of price and approachability, it shares the same exceptional terroir and the same vinification methods as the first wine, but offers a more supple profile and a shorter drinking window. It is an excellent entry point for discovering the estate's style without waiting many years of cellaring.

Château Calon Ségur is classified as a 3rd Grand Cru Classé in the famous official classification of Médoc wines established in 1855. It is one of the most northerly estates in this classification, located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. This prestigious status gives it a prime place among the great Bordeaux references, alongside the other classified growths of the left bank of the Gironde.

Château Calon Ségur is based primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, the king grape variety of the Médoc, which represents the majority of the estate's plantings. It is complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which bring roundness and aromatic complexity to the final blend. This varietal profile gives rise to age-worthy wines characterised by a firm tannic structure, aromas of dark fruits, cedar and spices, typical of the clay and gravel terroir of Saint-Estèphe.

The terroir of Château Calon Ségur is one of the most singular in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The estate extends over approximately 55 hectares in a single block, a rarity in the Médoc, on soils composed of Garonne gravels mixed with deep clays, resting on a limestone subsoil. This composition gives the wines a pronounced minerality, a natural freshness and a remarkable ageing potential. The proximity of the Gironde estuary also plays an essential regulatory role on the vineyard's microclimate.

History of Château Calon Ségur

Château Calon Ségur traces its roots to the Middle Ages. Records from as early as 1147 mention the estate, then held by Monseigneur de Calon, an influential bishop. In the 18th century, the estate became the property of Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, nicknamed the “Prince of the Vines.” He also owned the prestigious châteaux Lafite and Latour, and declared: “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.” This quote inspired the label on today’s Calon Ségur bottles, adorned with an emblematic heart symbolizing the marquis’s enduring attachment to this land.

Classified as a Third Growth in the renowned 1855 classification, the estate remained under the stewardship of the Gasqueton family for generations until 2012, when it was acquired by the insurance group Suravenir, a subsidiary of Crédit Mutuel Arkéa. Since the acquisition, the estate has benefited from major investments, notably under the direction of technical director Vincent Millet, who is working to modernize its facilities while preserving the distinctive character of Calon Ségur’s wines.

The 2020 and 2018 vintages of Château Calon-Ségur both received scores of 97/100 from Robert Parker, reflecting the elegance and power of this Saint-Estèphe classified growth.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Château Calon Ségur

What truly sets Château Calon Ségur apart is the exceptional character of its terroir on the Left Bank. Although the estate lies no more than 13 meters above sea level, its pronounced contours and slopes promote optimal drainage of rainwater. The soils consist of a thick layer of Quaternary gravel deposited by the river over time, resting on a clay subsoil. This combination of gravel and clay, unique in the region, contributes to the structure and finesse of the wines made here.

The 55-hectare vineyard, a single contiguous parcel entirely enclosed by a wall, is planted with the four classic Médoc grape varieties: 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon, the appellation’s leading variety, is particularly prominent in the blend, and a replanting program will increase its share to 70% by 2032. The vines are 22 years old on average, giving the grapes aromatic richness and remarkable depth.

The estate’s location near the Gironde estuary creates a microclimate favorable to the slow, even ripening of the grapes. Its plots, spread across gravel outcrops and gentle slopes, enjoy ideal exposure for a high-quality harvest, often among the latest in the region because of the cool terroirs.

Winemaking at Château Calon Ségur

Winemaking at Château Calon Ségur reflects meticulous attention to every detail to bring out the full potential of the terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting of the bunches at several stages to select only the ripest, healthiest fruit. Gravity carries the berries to the tanks, minimizing the risk of oxidation or damage.

The modern winery has 75 stainless steel tanks of varying capacities, allowing for vinification by plot and even by section within each plot. Each lot of grapes is vinified separately according to its characteristics to bring out the best of each terroir. Fermentation takes place under precise temperature control, while co-inoculation—a technique in which yeast and lactic acid bacteria ferment simultaneously—helps optimize the conversion of sugars and acids into alcohol while preserving the wine’s freshness and balance.

The wine is then aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, 100% new for the Fine Wine. This approach to aging respects the fruit, allowing the oak tannins to integrate harmoniously with those of the grapes and yielding wines that are powerful, elegant, and exceptionally refined.

Marquis de Calon Ségur

Marquis de Calon Ségur, the estate’s second wine, has a blend with a higher proportion of Merlot (up to 75%), giving it immediate roundness and generous fruit. C de Calon Ségur

Formerly known as “La Chapelle de Calon” and later “Le Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur,” C de Calon Ségur is the estate’s third wine. Made primarily from young vines, it stands out for its freshness and vibrant fruit. With a balanced blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is intended to be enjoyed young, offering a fine expression of the Calon terroir in a more approachable, ready-to-drink style. It is a convivial wine, ideal for informal occasions.

Château Capbern

Château Capbern, another Calon Ségur property, also produces high-quality wines from the same exceptional Saint-Estèphe terroirs.
