One of the most talented winemakers in the Loire
Thibaud Boudignon's estate, located in Savennières in the Loire Valley, represents one of the most exciting and promising names in French viticulture. Renowned for his unique approach and wines of remarkable precision, Boudignon has established himself as a rising star through his expertise, his respect for terroir, and his ability to bring out the best in the region's flagship grape variety, Chenin Blanc. By producing cuvées of exceptional quality, the estate has captivated wine lovers and professionals alike from around the world.
Thibaud Boudignon embodies the perfect union of passion, vision, and expertise. Originally from the Paris region, he was not destined to become a winemaker, but his encounter with the vine marked a turning point in his life. After a first contact with the profession during seasonal work in the south of France, he decided to dedicate himself entirely to the art of wine.
His career is marked by prestigious experiences: Château Lafite Rothschild (Pauillac) in Bordeaux, Canon-la-Gaffelière in Saint-Émilion, and renowned estates in Burgundy, such as Château de Pommard and Philippe Charlopin. These experiences allowed him to develop a precise vision of viticulture, combining modernity, rigor, and respect for traditions. He further enriched his skills in Australia, where he explored innovative techniques and consolidated his mastery of winemaking.
In 2007, Thibaud settled in Anjou as cellar master at Château Soucherie, in Beaulieu-sur-Layon. During this period, he discovered the incredible potential of the Savennières terroirs, a small Loire Valley appellation renowned for its exceptional Chenin blancs. In 2009, he created his own estate, with a clear vision: to produce pure, elegant wines deeply rooted in their terroir.
Since then, he has continued to develop his estate, purchasing and replanting carefully selected parcels for their exceptional potential. Today, Thibaud Boudignon is recognized as one of the most talented winemakers of his generation, and his wines rival the great Burgundy crus while offering a unique identity.
Thibaud Boudignon's estate spans 7.5 hectares, distributed between the Savennières and Anjou appellations. Each parcel has been carefully selected for its exceptional terroir and its ability to express the unique character of Chenin blanc.
Savennières is a small appellation nestled on the north bank of the Loire, renowned for its Chenin blancs with exceptional minerality. The region's soils, composed primarily of schist, sandstone, and clay, offer ideal terrain for producing wines of great complexity.
- Le Clos de Fremine (1.5 ha): This parcel, planted in 2014, is characterized by sandy soils, which bring finesse and delicacy to the wines. The terroir favors the production of elegant wines, with a silky texture and accessible earlier than other cuvées.
- Le Clos de la Hutte (2.65 ha): Located on a former religious site, this historic parcel rests on massive schists. The wines produced here are powerful, structured, and remarkably intense. Thibaud has also planted a small parcel of ungrafted vines, producing the rare and precious cuvée "Franc de Pied".
- La Vigne Cendrée (0.5 ha): This historic parcel, bordered by the famous Clos Saint-Yves, is a former wood transformed into a vineyard. Its varied soils, blending red schists and clay, give birth to a micro-cuvée of unique complexity.
- Le Clos Devant le Jeu (1 ha): This vineyard, planted in 2020, rests on gray schists. The first harvests promise deep wines with a strong character.
Thibaud also owns parcels in Anjou, in Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay and Bonnezeaux. These vineyards, planted on volcanic and schistous soils, allow the production of Chenin blancs of great purity. The old vines (30 to 40 years) offer low yields, but exceptional aromatic concentration.
Committed to a biodynamic approach, Thibaud Boudignon makes it a point of honor to respect the vine and its environment. He employs one person per hectare during the growing season, ensuring meticulous care for each vine. The soils are worked with precision, and high planting densities (6000 vines/ha) promote grape quality. Thibaud carefully selects rootstocks and massale selections for each parcel, to ensure perfect harmony between the grape variety and the terroir.
Vinification at Thibaud Boudignon reflects his artisanal and rigorous approach. Each step is designed to preserve the purity of the fruit and fully express the terroir.
Manual harvest: The harvests are carried out by hand to guarantee rigorous selection of the grapes.
Whole cluster pressing: This method allows gentle juice extraction, preserving the freshness and complexity of the aromas.
Natural vinification: Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, without added inputs, to respect the identity of the grapes.
Precise aging: The wines are aged on fine lees for 12 to 18 months in 300 to 600-liter barrels and Stockinger foudres. The influence of wood is minimal, serving only to add texture without masking the aromas.
Moderate use of sulfur: Thibaud adopts a reasoned approach, adding sulfur only when necessary to guarantee wine stability.
Through this method, Thibaud Boudignon's wines stand out for their purity, precision, and depth.
