Adrien Renoir

The Champagne Adrien Renoir: a family estate of biodynamic champagnes

The wines of Champagne Adrien Renoir: purchase at the best price

Adrien RENOIR joined the family estate in 2014, located in Verzy, at the heart of the Montagne de Reims. The vineyard is primarily situated in the village of Verzy, one of the 17 villages classified as Champagne Grand Cru. From his very arrival, this visionary young winemaker initiated a revolution within the family estate, passed down through four generations: the elimination of herbicides from 2015, a progressive conversion to certified organic and biodynamic viticulture in 2020, and a bold shift towards vinification in neutral oak barrels with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts. Across these 5 hectares of old vines from mass selections planted between 1961 and 1971, Adrien expresses the mineral purity and saline tension of Verzy's chalky terroir through exceptional single-plot cuvées, such as Les Montants and Les Epinettes, which bring out the best in each grape variety and each lieu-dit.

History of Champagne Adrien Renoir

The history of Domaine Adrien Renoir is that of a passionate lineage, rooted for four generations in the village of Verzy, one of the 17 Grands Crus of Champagne. It all began with the Renoir family's ancestors, independent winegrowers who patiently cultivated 2.5 hectares of old vines from mass selection, planted in the 1960s–1970s. At the helm of the estate until 2014, Vincent Renoir upheld a rigorous tradition, with manual harvesting and vinification in stainless steel tanks for structured Champagnes patiently aged in cellars.

It was in 2014 that Adrien Renoir, then 29 years old, joined the family venture and initiated a benevolent revolution. Despite his father's initial reservations about the feasibility of respectful farming in the northern climate of Verzy, Adrien gradually asserted his convictions: elimination of herbicides from 2015, organic conversion launched in 2016 and certification obtained in 2020, complemented by non-certified biodynamic practices. In 2019, he fully took the reins, relabelling the bottles under his own name and diversifying the cuvées to honour each plot. Today, this 7-hectare family estate (of which 5 are farmed for his own wines) embodies the new wave of Champagne producers.

Terroirs and Vines of Champagne Adrien Renoir

The terroir of Verzy, spread across three hills and valleys of the Montagne de Reims, is a gem for lovers of mineral and structured wines. With its fine chalky soils to the east (near Villers-Marmery) and more clayey ones to the west (towards Verzenay), this Grand Cru offers varied exposures that profoundly influence the grapes. Approximately 50–60% of the village's vines come from mass selections planted before 1965, a richness that Domaine Adrien Renoir fully exploits across its 5 dedicated hectares: 6 hectares in Verzy and an additional hectare in Tours-sur-Marne and Berru, although only the finest fruit from Verzy feeds its cuvées.

The vines, aged 50 to 60 years, rest on chalky soil with a superficial clay coating, worked by hand to preserve microbial life. Adrien Renoir practices organic and biodynamic viticulture there, with hand harvesting to sort mature berries, and integrates agroforestry (250 trees per hectare) to boost biodiversity and modulate the microclimate. The flagship plots include Les Montants (planted in 1961, 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay on direct chalk), Les Epinettes (1971, 100% Pinot Noir on clay-limestone with chalk) and Les Vignes Goisses (1962, 100% Pinot Meunier on sandy clay-limestone, frost-sensitive). These terroirs give the wines a lively acidity, a saline minerality and a chalky tension, ideal for Champagnes that faithfully express their origin.

Vinifications of Champagne Adrien Renoir

Vinification at Domaine Adrien Renoir is a minimalist and respectful art, designed to reveal the purity of the grapes without artifice. Abandoning traditional stainless steel tanks, Adrien has opted since 2017 for 100% fermentation in neutral oak barrels of varying sizes, initiated by spontaneous indigenous yeasts and without temperature control. This choice brings complexity and texture, while ageing on lees (including bâtonnage) lasts 11 to 24 months, promoting fine oxidation and harmonious integration of aromas.

The wines undergo neither fining nor filtration, preserving their vitality and fluidity. Reserve wines, representing up to 20% of the blends, mature in large oak foudres for lasting freshness. Before the secondary fermentation in bottle, a minimal dosage (often under 2 g/L, or even 0.8 g/L) with MCR (reserve Champagne must) underlines the natural tension. Disgorged by jetting without added sulphur, these Champagnes benefit from ageing on lees in bottle for a minimum of 24 to 36 months, for a fine and persistent mousse. This artisanal approach, rooted in organic and biodynamic practices, produces wines that are taut, rich and saline.

The cuvées of Champagne Adrien Renoir

The cuvées of Domaine Adrien Renoir form a diverse range, where each wine showcases a specific grape variety, vintage or named plot.

Le Terroir Extra Brut (bottle and magnum): Emblematic blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay from Verzy, with 20% reserve wines (previous vintage) aged in foudre. Vinified 80% in stainless steel and 20% in barrel, it offers a nose of white almond and yellow fruits, an elegant, concentrated and voluminous palate, tensioned by a vivifying acidity. Fresh and saline finish, perfect for a convivial aperitif.

Le Cépage (bottle and magnum): Blanc de noirs 100% Pinot Noir from Verzy (2020 harvest), aged on lees for three years and dosed at 0.8 g/L. Aromas of mandarin, white flowers, yellow fruits and brioche; winey, fleshy and saline palate. A full-bodied homage to the chalky terroir, ideal at 10°C to accompany light meats or fish.

Les Epinettes Pinot Noir: Single-varietal 100% Pinot Noir from the eponymous named plot (planted 1971 on clay-limestone), vinified and aged 100% in barrels, on lees for 24 months. Powerful nose of red and dried fruits (almond, hazelnut); indulgent, suave and mineral palate, with a saline tension on the finish. Balance between power and finesse, for structured dishes.

Les Montants Chardonnay: Blanc de blancs 100% Chardonnay from mass selection (planted 1961 on direct chalk), partially barrel-aged. Bouquet of citrus, white flowers and toasted hazelnuts; ample palate, tensioned by a vivifying acidity, chalky and piquant finish. Mineral power for a sophisticated table Champagne.

Les 2 Terroirs: Rosé d'assemblage 100% Pinot Noir (95% Verzy, 5% Bouzy), dosed at 0.8 g/L, disgorged in 2021. Lively nose of strawberry, cherry and brioche; fruity, saline and chalky palate, threaded with fine bubbles. Fruity and fresh elegance for a festive Grand Cru rosé.

Les Vignes Goisses: 100% Pinot Meunier from the named plot (planted 1962 on sandy clay-limestone soil), first vintage 2016, aged in barrels for a minimum of 36 months. Fruity and fresh, with roundness and purity; lightly dosed for balance, perfect as an aperitif or at the start of a meal.

Coteaux Champenois Blanc: Limited quantities, golden robe with green reflections, bouquet of citrus, brioche and hazelnut. Fine, light and acidic palate, tensioned by the minerality of Verzy.

Coteaux Champenois Rouge: 100% Pinot Noir, light ruby robe, nose of raspberry, cherry and white pepper. Pure, silky palate with melted tannins, intensely fruity.

Les Années: Solera 100% Pinot Noir (2013–2019) from Verzy, rich and oxidative extra brut. Fine complexity in neutral barrels, 24 months on lees; a winey and incisive style for lovers of experimentation.
