Wines from the Stéphane Bernaudeau estate: buy at the best price

Stéphane Bernaudeau is based in Cornu, in Anjou in the Martigné-Briand area, and produces in very small quantities (a few thousand bottles) whole wines that impress with their mineral chewiness on the palate. This artisan winemaker first worked at Mark Angeli before being able to set up on his own in 2000. In order to allow him to focus solely on his estate, Stéphane Bernaudeau recently acquired a new plot: les Onglés, which completes his Chenin range now consisting of 3 Loire whites as Vin de France (Onglés, Terres Blanches and Nourrissons), as Stéphane recently stopped production of his Loire red cuvée Les Vrilles.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Stéphane Bernaudeau estate has been established in Martigné-Briand, in Anjou, in the Loire Valley, since 2000. It spans varied terroirs of the Anjou Noir and Blanc, with decomposed schist, sandy, gravelly and clay-limestone soils, on gentle slopes between 50 and 100 metres in altitude. A discreet Loire address, yet recognised among lovers of great white wines from the Loire.

The vines of Domaine Stéphane Bernaudeau are predominantly trained in gobelet style without wire and worked by horse, following a biodynamic philosophy that respects natural cycles to deeply root the vines and extract the mineral quintessence of the soils. This artisanal and demanding viticulture is at the heart of the domaine's identity.

The rarity of wines from the Stéphane Bernaudeau estate is explained above all by the deliberately limited production volume. His small production of around 6,000 bottles per year enjoys great success, and his bottles are extremely difficult to obtain as his cuvées reach such a high level. Working alone on an estate of 3.5 hectares implies a confidential production.

The Stéphane Bernaudeau estate works exclusively with Chenin Blanc, expressed in distinct single-vineyard cuvées. Its winemaking is low-interventionist in order to allow the terroir and the Chenin Blanc grape variety to express their full potential, without additives, with only a small amount of sulphur in very reasonable quantities. This minimalist approach allows each plot to reveal its own aromatic and mineral signature.

Domaine Stéphane Bernaudeau produces several single-vineyard cuvées made from Chenin Blanc. Les Nourrissons is the flagship cuvée, sourced from a plot of less than 1 hectare planted in 1910 on a clay-schist plateau. Les Onglés comes from a 2-hectare plot of thirty-year-old vines on schist and limestone, with a south-west orientation. A third cuvée, Les Coqueries, was born in 2019 and rounds out this exclusive range. These three wines are sought after by lovers of terroir-driven chenins with a strong personality.

The wines of Domaine Stéphane Bernaudeau are wines for ageing that reward patience. Their true and imposing minerality overflows on the palate and gives a striking impression of chewiness; these are wines that require many years of waiting before they reveal their full potential. Les Nourrissons offers a sharp acidity that balances a generous richness, with notes of ripe yellow fruits refreshed by citrus zests. To fully appreciate them, it is recommended to serve them between 12 and 14°C in a large Burgundy glass, ideally alongside noble fish, shellfish or pressed-curd cheeses.

History of Stéphane Bernaudeau

Founded in 2000 by Stéphane Bernaudeau, this human-scale estate has its roots in thorough training with Mark Angeli, at Ferme de la Sansonnière, where he worked for over fifteen years as right-hand man. Born in Anjou, Stéphane, a child of the banks of the Layon, grew up observing local fauna and flora before turning to wine in the 1990s. Influenced by pioneers like Jo Pithon, Richard Leroy, and Eric Calcutt, he took over in 2000 the legendary Les Nourrissons parcel from Eric Calcutt, marking the beginning of his independent production. Although he continued collaborating with Angeli until 2015, Stéphane settled permanently in Cornu, near Martigné-Briand, with his wife Isabelle and their family. Passionate about cycling and blind tastings, he favors a balanced life, far from crowded trade shows, to devote himself fully to his vines. Today, his wines, ultra-confidential with production limited to a few thousand bottles per year, enjoy cult status.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Stéphane Bernaudeau

Domaine Stéphane Bernaudeau extends over varied terroirs of Anjou Noir and Blanc, influenced by an oceanic continental climate, with decomposed schistous, sandy, gravelly, and clay-limestone soils, on gentle slopes between 50 and 100 meters altitude. The vines, mostly in goblet form without wire and worked with horses, follow a practical biodynamic philosophy, respecting natural cycles to deeply root the vines and extract the mineral quintessence of the soils. Iconic parcels include Les Nourrissons (0.7 ha of century-old Chenin on clay-schist, southwest plateau), Les Terres Blanches (0.45 ha of eighty-year-old vines on light limestone, upstream of the Layon), Les Onglés (2 ha of thirty-year-old vines on schist and limestone, southwest exposure), and Les Coqueries (nearly 1 ha in Bonnezeaux, taken over in 2019 on schistous hillsides). These micro-terroirs, protected from frost thanks to an innovative mobile wind machine, produce grapes at low yield (about 25 hl/ha), ripe and healthy.

Vinifications at Domaine Stéphane Bernaudeau

In a modest cellar adjacent to his house, Stéphane Bernaudeau favors minimalist vinification to preserve the identity of each parcel. Manual harvests, rigorously sorted by a dedicated team, are pressed in whole clusters via a vertical press, with settling in stainless steel tanks to balance the juices. Spontaneous fermentation occurs in used 228-liter barrels or 15 hl Vicard foudres, without forced intervention for malolactic, which happens naturally. Aging on fine lees lasts 12 months without bâtonnage or racking, followed by a discreet addition of SO2 (about 30-40 mg/l total) for optimal youthful tension. No filtration or fining: wines are bottled manually between October and December, often labeled Vin de France to emphasize their authenticity. This approach, refined over the years, transforms grapes into precise cuvées, vibrant with mineral energy, ready to evolve elegantly over 4 to 5 years or more.

Domaine Stéphane Bernaudeau Cuvées

The cuvées of Domaine Stéphane Bernaudeau, all from single-parcel Chenin Blanc, captivate with their uniqueness and depth.

Les Nourrissons: Iconic cuvée from a tiny parcel of less than 1 ha, planted in 1910 on a clay-schist plateau facing south-southwest. This crystalline Chenin offers sharp acidity that balances generous richness, with notes of ripe yellow fruits refreshed by citrus zests. Powerful and refined on the palate, it integrates stretched minerality that extends the finish. A singular Loire wine, comparable to an Angevin Puligny-Montrachet.

Les Onglés: From a 2 ha parcel of thirty-year-old vines on schist and limestone, facing southwest. This cuvée reveals delicate notes of white fruits, a frank mineral attack, and pure gourmand fruit that adds complexity to the whole. Aged 12 months on lees in barrels, it expresses the saline texture of the terroir with intense freshness.

Les Terres Blanches: From 0.45 ha of old vines over 80 years old on white clay-limestone soils, near the Layon. Refined and chalky, it displays aromas of white peach, infusion, and pure minerality. The racy and elegant finish requires aeration to dissipate any initial reduction, offering silky texture and remarkable longevity.

Les Coqueries: New arrival since 2019, on nearly 1 ha in Bonnezeaux, hillside schistous terroir divided by the Layon. This luminous and saline Chenin structures solar concentration with vibrant flavors and overflowing power, the "Bâtard-Montrachet of Anjou". First vinification in 2019, it shines with precision and electric tension.

Stéphane Bernaudeau is a discreet and passionate reference in the exclusive world of great Loire winemakers, fruit of total commitment to absolute quality. With ultra-limited production, these cult cuvées, prized by collectors, quickly disappear from shelves. Treat yourself to the timeless elegance of these vibrant Chenins, faithful mirror of unique Loire terroirs, and join the circle of connoisseurs who know that true rarity lies in authenticity.
