Wine 1966

The 1966 vintage is a very great vintage thanks to ideal climatic conditions. Champagne is a fine example of this very great 1966 vintage, with highly elegant vintage Champagnes , such as the iconic Champagne Krug 1966 or Champagne Charles Heidsieck Cuvée Spéciale Charles Heidsieck 1966. In Bordeaux, the 1966 vintage sits between the exceptional 1961 and 1970. The red wines of the Graves and the red wines of the Médoc are more delicate than the great classified growths of Saint Estèphe 1966, which are more powerful and present a better ageing potential. In Burgundy, the picture is more uneven for the 1966 vintage. The red wines are remarkably balanced, reflecting the brilliance of the fruit and the elegance of Burgundy's king grape variety, Pinot Noir. The finest wines produced in this 1966 vintage came from Morey Saint Denis, Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée.

Our advice for purchasing a 1966 wine

If you wish to offer a 1966 wine as a gift, we recommend focusing on the great wines of Bordeaux. Some red Bordeaux wines have evolved with austere, tannic notes, whereas the great châteaux produced a very well-balanced 1966 vintage, such as the wines from Latour, La Mission Haut Brion, Canon, Léoville Las Cases... which have blossomed beautifully and are still full of charm and elegance. You will also delight in the wines from Branaire Ducru, Mouton Rothschild, Haut Brion, Calon Ségur, Palmer, Lynch Bages, Lafleur, Figeac, etc... The Grand Crus from Pomerol, such as Pétrus, and from Saint Emilion, such as Cheval Blanc, are highly concentrated and built for aging. On the other hand, the sweet white wines from Sauternes had difficulties developing, but certain châteaux managed to produce exceptional white wines such as Coutet, Suduiraut, or Yquem.

In Burgundy, the wines that have aged best from the 1966 vintage are the white Burgundy wines from the Montrachet hill: Batard Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Montrachet, as well as Corton Charlemagne. For the 1966 red Burgundy wines, favor the grand crus: Chambertin, Clos de Tart, Clos de Vougeot, Corton, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux, Musigny, Richebourg, Romanée Conti, Romanée Saint Vivant.

For 1966 Rhône wines, opt instead for red wines from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape in the Southern Rhône and Côte Rotie in the Northern Rhône. For equally warming red Rhône wines, the sweet fortified wines from Roussillon, from Rivesaltes or Maury are still brilliant to taste from 1966, and you will have some pleasant surprises abroad, with Barolo and Brunello in Italy.
