Wine 1966

The 1966 vintage is a very great vintage thanks to ideal climatic conditions. Champagne is a fine example of this very great 1966 vintage, with very elegant vintage champagnes, such as the iconic Champagne Krug 1966 or Champagne Charles Heidsieck Cuvée Spécial Charles Heidsieck 1966. In Bordeaux, the 1966 vintage falls between the exceptional 1961 and 1970. The red wines of Graves and the red wines of Médoc are more delicate than the great crus of Saint Estèphe 1966, which are more powerful and present better aging potential. In Burgundy, the picture is more mixed for the 1966 vintage. The red wines are remarkably well-balanced, showcasing the brilliance of the fruit and the elegance of Burgundy's king grape variety, Pinot Noir. The finest wines produced in this 1966 vintage came from Morey Saint Denis, Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée.

Our advice on buying a 1966 wine

If you would like to give a 1966 wine as a gift, we recommend choosing one of the great Bordeaux wines. Some Bordeaux red wines have developed austere, tannic notes, while the leading châteaux produced very well-balanced 1966 wines. Those from Latour, La Mission Haut-Brion, Canon and Léoville Las Cases, for example, have matured beautifully and remain full of charm and elegance. You will also enjoy wines from Branaire-Ducru, Mouton Rothschild, Haut-Brion, Calon-Ségur, Palmer, Lynch-Bages, Lafleur and Figeac, among others. The great wines of Pomerol, such as Pétrus, and Saint-Émilion, such as Cheval White, are concentrated and built to age. By contrast, sweet white wines from Sauternes struggled to develop, though some châteaux managed to make exceptional white wines, including Coutet, Suduiraut and Yquem.

In Burgundy, the 1966 wines that have aged best are the white Burgundy wines from the Montrachet hillside: Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Montrachet, as well as Corton-Charlemagne. For 1966 red Burgundy wines, favor the grands crus: Chambertin, Clos de Tart, Clos de Vougeot, Corton, Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux, Musigny, Richebourg, Romanée-Conti and Romanée-Saint-Vivant.

For 1966 wines from the Rhône, favor red wines from appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Southern Rhône and Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône. Alongside similarly warming Rhône red wines, the naturally sweet wines of Roussillon, Rivesaltes and Maury from 1966 are still vibrant to taste. You may also find some delightful surprises abroad among the Barolo and Brunello wines of Italy.
