Frequently Asked Questions

Château Rieussec is an exceptional wine estate located in Fargues-de-Langon, in the Sauternes appellation, in Bordeaux. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru in 1855, it benefits from an ideally exposed clay-gravel terroir, conducive to the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which gives its wines their unparalleled richness and complexity. Château Rieussec produces sweet wines of great aromatic concentration, combining notes of honey, candied apricot and saffron, with a freshness that guarantees remarkable longevity. It is this alliance between opulence and balance that earns it its reputation among the most prestigious Sauternes in the world.

To fully appreciate a Château Rieussec, it is recommended to serve it chilled, between 8 and 10°C, in a slightly tulip-shaped tasting glass that concentrates its complex aromas. If the wine is young, a light aeration of about thirty minutes in a decanter can help it express itself. In terms of food and wine pairings, Château Rieussec pairs wonderfully with pan-fried or semi-cooked foie gras, blue-veined cheeses such as Roquefort, but also with desserts based on exotic fruits or cream. Older, more evolved vintages reveal sublime pairings with sweet-and-savoury dishes or spiced cuisine.

Château Rieussec is one of the best-endowed sweet wines for ageing in the entire Sauternes appellation. Thanks to its concentration of natural sugars, natural acidity and richness in glycerol, the grand vin of Château Rieussec can be cellared and develop over 20 to 50 years, or even longer for the greatest vintages. For optimal storage, it is advisable to keep the bottles in a cellar at a stable temperature, between 10 and 14°C, away from light and vibrations, stored on their side. Enthusiasts who wish to enjoy the wine at its full aromatic potential would do well to wait at least 8 to 10 years after the harvest before opening a bottle.

Among the most celebrated vintages of Château Rieussec, several great years stand out in particular. The 1983 is unanimously recognised as one of the greatest, offering exceptional concentration and complexity. The 1988 captivates with its perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. The 1975 and 1976 are two sun-drenched vintages that gave birth to wines of intense richness. More accessible, the 2001 is often cited as an absolute reference in the Sauternes appellation, with a concentration and freshness that make it a legendary wine. These vintages perfectly illustrate the exceptional ageing potential of the estate.

Château Rieussec produces two distinct cuvées. The grand vin, simply called Château Rieussec, is made from the finest plots and the oldest vines on the estate. It undergoes rigorous plot-by-plot selection and ageing in oak barrels for approximately 18 to 24 months, which gives it its structure, complexity, and ageing potential over several decades. Carmes de Rieussec, the second wine, is made from younger vines or slightly different selections. It offers a more approachable and earlier-drinking profile, while retaining the elegant and luscious style characteristic of the estate. It is an excellent entry point for discovering the world of Château Rieussec at a more affordable price.

To buy Château Rieussec online with confidence, it is advisable to turn to online wine merchants specialising in great Bordeaux wines, who offer properly stored and traceable bottles. Before placing an order, check the vintage on offer according to your intended use: if you wish to give the bottle as a gift or enjoy it soon, a vintage between 5 and 10 years old will be ideal. If you are building a long-term cellar, look towards recent vintages with strong potential. Also consider consulting technical sheets and reviews from wine critics to guide your choice.

History of Château Rieussec

Château Rieussec has a fascinating history dating back to the 18th century, when it was the property of the Carmelite monks of Langon. At that time, the estate's lands were already coveted for their exceptional quality. However, the French Revolution disrupted this era of monastic viticulture, and the estate was confiscated and sold as national property in 1790. It was then acquired by the Marheilhac family, already owners of Château La Louvière in Pessac Léognan.

The modern history of Rieussec is marked by a succession of owners. From 1846 to 1971, nine families followed one another, including the renowned Gasqueton family, also owners of Château Calon-Ségur in Saint-Estèphe. In 1984, the estate was purchased by the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) with the firm intention of restoring its former glory. From that point on, significant investments were made, including the construction of a new chai in 1989 and ongoing efforts to improve the quality of the wines.

Under the stewardship of the Rothschilds, Rieussec experienced a true renaissance, reaching its peak with exceptional vintages such as those of 1988, 1989, and 1990. The following decade confirmed this trend with wines acclaimed by critics, and in 2004, Château Rieussec 2001 was even named "Wine of the Year" by the renowned magazine Wine Spectator.

Robert Parker awarded 98/100 to the 2009 vintage of Château Rieussec, while the 2005 and 2017 vintages follow closely with 97/100, confirming the consistency and quality of this classified growth of Sauternes.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Rieussec

The vineyard of Château Rieussec extends over 85 hectares, making it one of the largest in the Sauternes appellation. Its plots are ideally situated between the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, in the immediate vicinity of the legendary Château d'Yquem. This privileged geographical position places Rieussec on one of the highest points of the appellation, reaching an altitude of 78 metres.

The estate's soils are predominantly composed of sandy gravel (80%) and clay gravel (20%), characteristics that promote the optimal ripening of the grapes. The grape variety selection is dominated by Sémillon, an emblematic variety of Sauternes wines, which accounts for 90% of the vines. It is complemented by Sauvignon Blanc (7%) and Muscadelle (3%). These varieties benefit from the presence of botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, an essential fungus that concentrates sugars and imparts to Rieussec's wines their unique aromatic richness.

The harvest at Rieussec is a meticulous operation that spans six to eight weeks, from September to November. The grapes are picked by hand during several successive passes through the vines, in order to select only the berries affected by botrytis at the optimal moment. This rigour in harvesting is a guarantee of quality, although production often remains low, reflecting the volatility of climatic conditions.

Winemaking at Château Rieussec

Winemaking at Château Rieussec is a meticulous process that combines ancestral traditions and modern innovations to produce wines of great precision. Following rigorous harvesting, the sorted grapes are pressed individually in a low-capacity pneumatic press to preserve the integrity of the aromas.

The must is then poured into oak barrels, predominantly new, sourced from the Tonnellerie des Domaines in Pauillac. It is during this barrel fermentation that the estate's expertise is fully expressed. The alcoholic fermentation is halted when the perfect balance between sugar and alcohol is achieved, preserving the full aromatic complexity of the wine.

The wine is then aged in barrels for 18 to 24 months, depending on the characteristics of the vintage. This ageing period allows the aromas to develop and the tannins to refine, endowing the wines of Rieussec with an incomparable structure and depth.

The cuvées of Château Rieussec

Château Rieussec produces several cuvées of sweet wines, each reflecting the richness and diversity of its exceptional terroir.

Château Rieussec

Classified as a Premier Grand Cru in 1855, Château Rieussec is a benchmark sweet wine in Sauternes. A subtle blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle, this wine displays intense aromas of candied fruits, citrus, and gentle spices, accompanied by vanilla and woody notes derived from barrel ageing. Its unctuous texture and fine acidity give it an excellent ageing potential. Château Rieussec is a quintessential wine for the cellar, evolving over time to offer even deeper and more complex flavours.

Carmes de Rieussec

This second wine of the estate is crafted from the same plots as the grand vin. With a beautiful aromatic breadth dominated by notes of citrus and white flowers, Carmes de Rieussec stands out for its finesse and elegance. It offers a more accessible rendition of Rieussec's wines, while preserving the typicity of the terroir. Its name is a tribute to the Carmelite monks who were the estate's first owners.

Château de Cosse

The third sweet wine cuvée from Rieussec, Château de Cosse offers a slightly lighter and more accessible profile, yet retains the richness and complexity characteristic of Sauternes wines. It is an ideal wine for younger drinking, though it can also age gracefully.

The finest vintages of Sauternes and Barsac, two prestigious appellations of Bordeaux, include exceptional years such as 1945, 1947, 1949, 1955, 1959, and 1967, renowned for their finesse and complexity. Among more recent vintages, notable years include 1975, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, as well as the legendary 2001. Lovers of sweet wines will also appreciate the years 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2013. Finally, the excellent climatic conditions of recent decades have yielded memorable vintages in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. These wines offer a unique aromatic richness and a remarkable ageing potential.
