Domaine Foillard is based in Villié-Morgon and has a superb 13.8-hectare vineyard spread across the Morgon AOC (8.6 hectares), the Fleurie AOC (1 hectare), and 4.2 hectares in Beaujolais-Villages and Beaujolais. Jean Foillard took over the family estate in 1980 and immediately adopted organic viticulture practices: working the soil and using only a few sulfur and copper treatments to care for the vines. At the time, this seemed exceptional in Beaujolais, as it did at Domaine Marcel Lapierre. Known for its natural wines and exceptional terroirs, this family property produces cuvées of rare precision, bringing out the best in Gamay with a philosophy rooted in respect for nature.

History of Domaine Jean Foillard

Founded in the heart of the Morgon appellation, Domaine Jean Foillard took off in 1981 when Jean Foillard took over the family vineyard. The son and grandson of winemakers, he inherited a long winemaking tradition. But beyond that family heritage, Jean steered the estate toward a radically different philosophy, inspired by his neighbor Marcel Lapierre, a leading figure in natural wine who was himself a disciple of the renowned enologist Jules Chauvet.

In 1985, Jean Foillard began a shift toward natural winemaking, eliminating herbicides and pesticides and adopting low-intervention methods. Over the decades, the estate, which started with 8 hectares, has become one of Beaujolais's leading names and now spans nearly 20 hectares. Jean Foillard's commitment to organic viticulture and natural winemaking quickly made his wines some of the most sought-after among enthusiasts worldwide.

Today, Jean is gradually handing the estate over to his son Alex, who carries on the family tradition while bringing a fresh perspective, having also taken over a few hectares of vines under his own name.

Terroirs and vineyards of Domaine Jean Foillard

Domaine Jean Foillard primarily works two of the finest terroirs in the Morgon appellation: the legendary Côte du Py and the renowned Corcelette. Côte du Py is particularly famous for its soils of granitic schist and decomposed rock, which give the wines a rich structure and distinctive depth. Corcelette's sandy and granitic soils, meanwhile, produce wines that are fruitier, more delicate, and generous on the palate.

In addition to Morgon, the estate has a few plots in the neighboring Fleurie appellation, which produces wines of great elegance. Jean Foillard and his team tend these vines according to strict organic principles. The soil is tilled by hand, and yields are kept low to ensure grape quality. In difficult vintages, such as 2021, when frost hit the vines hard, yields fall considerably, reflecting the meticulous attention given to each plot.

Winemaking at Domaine Jean Foillard

Winemaking at Domaine Jean Foillard follows traditional principles that respect the fruit and the environment. Grapes are harvested by hand, ensuring a rigorous selection of clusters. After harvest, they spend a night in cold storage to maintain an ideal temperature for maceration.

The estate's preferred method is semi-carbonic maceration, using whole clusters without adding commercial yeast. This method preserves the freshness of Gamay noir à jus blanc, the grape variety emblematic of Beaujolais. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks, which provide a stable temperature, followed by 7 to 9 months of aging in oak barrels.

Jean Foillard uses little or no sulfur during winemaking. A small amount may be added at bottling, but the wines are neither fined nor filtered, preserving all their vibrancy and complexity. Careful monitoring under a microscope throughout the process also ensures exceptional precision in winemaking.

The cuvées of Domaine Jean Foillard

Domaine Jean Foillard produces several signature cuvées, renowned for their finesse and depth. Here is an overview of the main cuvées:

Morgon "Classique": A wine with vibrant freshness, perfect for drinking young but also capable of aging for a few years. This Morgon is an ideal introduction to the estate's wines.

Morgon Côte du Py: The estate's flagship cuvée, from the renowned Côte du Py terroir. This wine stands out for its intense fruit, silky structure, and excellent aging potential. It embodies all the richness of Morgon.

Morgon Corcelette: From the sandy soils of Corcelette, this cuvée reveals fruity aromas and a velvety palate. Its finesse and elegance make it a favorite among Gamay enthusiasts.

Morgon 3.14: Produced only in exceptional vintages, this cuvée comes from the oldest vines of Côte du Py. It is distinguished by its depth and aging potential.

Fleurie: Sourced from plots in the neighboring appellation, this wine stands out for its pure fruit and silky texture. Aged in oak barrels, it improves after a few years in the cellar.

Beaujolais Nouveau: The estate also produces a Beaujolais Nouveau cuvée: a lively, fruity, easy-drinking wine perfect for enjoying right away.
