Wine 1996

Unlike 1995 (the year of Merlot), climatic conditions were favourable for the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety in Bordeaux wines 1996. The 1996 Médoc Classified Growths therefore benefited, producing powerful 1996 red wines with great ageing potential, even better in Saint-Estèphe 1996, Pauillac 1996 and Saint-Julien 1996. Saint-Émilion 1996 and Pomerol 1996 offer good wines, but a notch below those of the Médoc. Among white Bordeaux 1996, only Haut-Brion stands out, and in Sauternes white wine, the 1996 vintage is good without being great, with a few notable successes. On the Burgundy 1996 side, the vintage is highly regarded: the summer and harvest conditions (early harvest) were good, yielding structured wines with a deep colour (suitable for ageing, both red and white). The 1996 Burgundy wines are generally characterised by high acidity, which can overshadow the fruit.

The Champagne region offers an exceptional 1996 vintage, well worth seeking out, as the maturity and acidity of its wines give it great ageing potential. The Rhône wines of 1996 suffered from poor weather conditions, and the best bottles come from the Northern Rhône Valley (Cornas 1996, Côte Rôtie 1996, Hermitage 1996). The sweet Loire white wines of 1996 are exceptionally rich, and particularly remarkable in Savennières. An intermediate 1996 vintage in Alsace (better for late harvest wines) and average in Languedoc Roussillon: one name stands out, Grange des Pères 1996 …

If you are looking to invest in a bottle of wine from the 1996 vintage, we recommend choosing one of the following wines. Among the classified growths of the Médoc, look to Calon Ségur 1996, Cos d'Estournel 1996, Château Margaux 1996, Lafite Rothschild 1996, Latour 1996, Mouton Rothschild 1996, Pichon Comtesse 1996, Pontet Canet 1996, Ducru Beaucaillou 1996 and Léoville Las Cases 1996. Haut Brion 1996 and Mission Haut Brion 1996 in Pessac Léognan. Lovers of Right Bank wines, Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, will find their delight in Château Angélus 1996, Ausone 1996, Magdelaine 1996, Monbousquet 1996 and Tertre Roteboeuf 1996. In Sauternes, a few wines stand above the rest: De Fargues 1996, Rieussec 1996 and Yquem 1996.
