Frequently Asked Questions

Château Brane-Cantenac holds a privileged position in the Margaux appellation thanks to its exceptional terroir, composed of deep gravels on the Cantenac plateau. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this Médoc estate benefits from well-drained soil that is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape variety in the blend. The château's style is distinguished by great aromatic finesse, a silky texture, and a typically Margaux elegance that has earned it a solid reputation among lovers of Bordeaux wines.

Château Brane-Cantenac, with its refined tannic structure and lingering finish, pairs naturally with elaborate red meat dishes such as herb-roasted milk-fed lamb or beef Wellington. It also accompanies feathered game, duck and hard aged cheeses with great success. For lovers of traditional regional cuisine, a Bordelaise-style entrecôte with bone marrow will make for a sublime food and wine pairing with this great red from the Margaux appellation.

Château Brane-Cantenac is a wine with great ageing potential, capable of developing serenely for 15 to 30 years depending on the vintage. Great years such as 1982, 1989 or 2000 reach their peak after around fifteen years of ageing and can be kept well beyond that. For optimal storage, the bottle should be kept in a cellar at a constant temperature between 12 and 14 °C, away from light and vibrations, with a humidity level of around 70 %.

Among the most remarkable vintages of Château Brane-Cantenac, the years 1989 and 1990 stand out for their richness and accomplished balance. The 2000 vintage is often cited as an absolute reference for the estate, offering exceptional concentration and depth. The years 1959, 1961 and 1982 are also highly sought after by lovers of older Bordeaux, testifying to the remarkable ageing potential of this Deuxième Cru Classé de Margaux.

Le Baron de Brane is the second wine of Château Brane-Cantenac, produced from younger plots or from grapes that did not reach the qualitative level required to be included in the Fine Wine. More approachable in its youth, it shares the same aromatic DNA as the first wine, the finesse and fruitiness characteristic of Margaux, but with a softer structure and lesser complexity. It is an excellent entry point to discover the estate's style at a more affordable price.

To fully appreciate Château Brane-Cantenac, it is advisable to serve it between 16 and 18 °C in a large Bordeaux glass that will allow the aromas to open up. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended for younger vintages in order to open the bouquet and soften the tannins. This Margaux wine will then fully express its notes of dark fruits, violet, cedar and blonde tobacco that form the estate's aromatic signature.

History of Château Brane-Cantenac

Founded in the 18th century under the name Château Gorce, the estate rose to prominence when it was acquired in 1833 by Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane, nicknamed the "Napoleon of the Vines". This visionary completely restructured the property and gave it the name Château Brane-Cantenac. He highlighted the richness of its terroir, propelling the estate to the rank of Second Grand Cru Classé during the famous 1855 classification.

The château passed through several hands before joining the Lurton family in 1925. Lucien Lurton took the helm in 1956 and continued the family tradition with passion. However, it was his son Henri Lurton, who arrived in 1996, who breathed new dynamism into the estate. Thanks to major investments in the chai infrastructure and a modernisation of viticultural practices, Château Brane-Cantenac is today regarded as one of the jewels of the Margaux appellation.

The 2019 vintage of Château Brane-Cantenac was awarded 97/100 by Robert Parker, illustrating the outstanding quality of this characterful Margaux and the finesse of its aromas.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Château Brane-Cantenac

Château Brane-Cantenac benefits from an exceptional terroir situated on the Brane plateau, on the left bank, the highest point of the Margaux appellation. This plateau is composed of Quaternary gravels, with Mindel and Günz subsoils, allowing excellent water regulation and optimal ripening of the grapes. The vines, with a planting density of 6,500 to 8,000 vines per hectare, extend over 75 hectares, of which 72 are dedicated to the production of red wine.

The vineyard, planted primarily with cabernet sauvignon (55%), merlot (40%), cabernet franc (5%) and a touch of carmenère, benefits from rigorous care to guarantee the best expression of the terroir. The vines have an average age of 35 years, an ideal age for producing concentrated and well-balanced grapes. Since 2010, a portion of the vineyard (10 hectares) has been cultivated using organic viticulture, demonstrating the estate's commitment to sustainable and environmentally respectful viticulture.

Winemaking at Château Brane-Cantenac

Winemaking at Château Brane-Cantenac combines traditional methods with cutting-edge techniques. The grapes, carefully harvested by hand, are lightly crushed before being transported by gravity into the vats. This gentle approach preserves the integrity of the berries and optimises the quality of the must. The estate has a modern vat room, composed in equal parts of wooden, concrete and stainless steel vats, allowing precise management of fermentations and optimal temperature control.

One of the estate's key innovations is the use of the "R'Pulse" system. This process injects air into the vats to gently stir the grape skins and seeds, thus promoting a soft extraction of aromas and colours without resorting to aggressive mechanical contact. This method produces wines that are more intense and deeper, while avoiding the introduction of harsh or overly powerful tannins.

Another crucial aspect of winemaking is pressing. Château Brane-Cantenac considers the press wine (the juice extracted from the skins after pressing) as an essential component of the blend. Through meticulous programming of the pressure cycles, the estate extracts three distinct qualities of juice, each kept separately before blending. This process adds complexity to the wines, while preserving the finesse and elegance that characterise the house style.

The Cuvées of Château Brane-Cantenac

Château Brane-Cantenac produces several cuvées, all imbued with the unique spirit of the Margaux appellation:

Château Brane-Cantenac: The estate's fine wine, composed primarily of cabernet sauvignon, with merlot and a touch of cabernet franc. It is distinguished by its finesse, depth and perfect balance between power and elegance. It is aged for 18 months in barrels, of which 60 to 70% are new oak, lending it a silky tannic structure and beautiful aromatic complexity.

Baron de Brane: The estate's second wine, crafted from young vines. Less powerful than the fine wine, it offers a beautiful expression of the Margaux terroir with fruity and floral aromas. It is an accessible, elegant and indulgent wine, perfect for a more relaxed tasting.

Margaux de Brane: The estate's third wine, it presents a fruity and supple profile, with smooth tannins. Ideal for more immediate consumption, it reflects the soul of Château Brane-Cantenac with a lighter, easy-to-appreciate approach.

Brane-Cantenac Blanc: The estate also produces a white wine in small quantities, made from sauvignon blanc, sauvignon gris and sémillon grape varieties. This Bordeaux white wine is fresh, lively and aromatic, with floral and fruity notes.

The finest vintages of Margaux, one of the most prestigious wines of Bordeaux, are renowned for their finesse and elegance. Among the most remarkable years, one finds 1959, 1983, 1986, 1990, 1995, 1996 and 1999, celebrated for their complexity and longevity. Recent vintages such as 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2016 are also highly regarded for their structure and richness. Other years such as 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 confirm Margaux's consistency in producing exceptional wines, a symbol of Bordeaux excellence.

The Deuxièmes Crus Classés of 1855 constitute a prestigious category, bringing together emblematic estates that often rival the premiers crus in quality. Among them, discover Château Brane-Cantenac and Château Durfort-Vivens, both located in Margaux, as well as Château Lascombes, Château Rauzan-Ségla and Château Rauzan-Gassies. In Saint-Julien, enthusiasts will appreciate the wines of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Gruaud Larose, and the celebrated Château Léoville Poyferré and Château Léoville Barton. Also not to be missed are Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe, as well as the unmissable Château Pichon Longueville Baron and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac

With a rich history, an exceptional terroir and avant-garde winemaking techniques, Château Brane-Cantenac stands as an essential name in the Margaux appellation. Its cuvées, always marked by elegance and complexity, reflect the estate's excellence. For lovers of great wines from Médoc, this is a name to know and to savour.
