Ornellaia wines: buy at the best price

Ornellaia, or Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, is one of the most prestigious wine estates in Tuscany and an iconic figure in the Super Tuscans. Located in Bolgheri, a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea, this estate produces Bordeaux-inspired blends dominated by cabernet sauvignon and merlot, of which the fine wine Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore is the absolute icon. Owned by the Florentine Frescobaldi family, the estate also produces remarkable second wines, elegant whites based on sauvignon, as well as a rare dessert wine.

History of Ornellaia

The story of Ornellaia begins in 1981, when Marquis Lodovico Antinori founded the estate on the hills of Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast. Inspired by the success of neighbouring Sassicaia, he planted Bordeaux grape varieties — cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc — on ancient seabeds bathed by sea breezes. The first vintage, released in 1985, quickly generated international enthusiasm and elevated the estate to the ranks of Italy's greatest wines.

At the end of the 1990s, Robert Mondavi brought his expertise and strengthened the wine's presence on American markets. It was also on the estate that the legendary Masseto was born, which has since become an independent property. In 2005, the Frescobaldi family, whose winemaking tradition stretches back more than seven centuries, became the sole owner of Ornellaia. Under their leadership, the estate combines a pursuit of perfection, contemporary art and a sustainable approach, confirming its status as a global icon.

Terroirs and Vines of Ornellaia

The estate spans around one hundred hectares approximately two kilometres from the sea, of which some seventy-five hectares are planted with vines on elevated hillsides surrounding the village of Bolgheri. The soils, of great diversity, combine clay, gravel and silt of marine, alluvial and volcanic origin, offering a mosaic of plots with distinct personalities, such as Bellaria, Pero and Vigna Vecchia.

The proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea plays an essential role, with the light reflected off the water and an exceptional microclimate tempering the summer heat while protecting the vines from the harshest winds. This Mediterranean environment lends the wines their sunny character and elegance. The estate cultivates Bordeaux grape varieties for its reds, as well as sauvignon, vermentino, verdicchio and petit manseng for its whites, in an approach that respects the environment and the preservation of centuries-old olive trees.

Ornellaia Vinification

Vinification at Ornellaia is founded on a philosophy of uncompromising quality and extreme attention to detail. Each plot and each grape variety is vinified separately to preserve its identity, before the final blend that reveals the sought-after complexity and harmony. The fine wine is aged for approximately eighteen months in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new casks from different cooperages and levels of toasting to preserve its finesse.

An additional period of bottle ageing precedes release, ensuring wines that are powerful, refined and built for cellaring over several decades. The second wines follow the same rigorous approach while being more accessible in their youth, while the whites are vinified to preserve their freshness, tension and aromatic finesse. The estate is also known for its artistic project, the Vendemmia d'Artista, which entrusts the dressing of certain exceptional vintages to a contemporary artist.

The Ornellaia Cuvées

Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore: the estate's flagship wine, a blend dominated by cabernet sauvignon and merlot, complemented by cabernet franc and petit verdot. Deep purple colour, nose of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, graphite and cedar, a rich and silky palate carried by fine tannins, a hint of iodine and a long mineral finish, with superb ageing potential.

Ornellaia Vendemmia d'Artista: a special edition of the estate's fine wine, produced in vintages deemed exceptional and dressed by a contemporary artist. The same exceptional wine, presented in a particularly sought-after collector's package.

Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia: the estate's second wine, created in 1997 and classified as Bolgheri Rosso. A merlot-dominant blend, complemented by cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and petit verdot, elegant and complex, more accessible in its youth while possessing a fine potential for development.

Le Volte dell'Ornellaia: entry-level cuvée in Toscana IGT, a blend of merlot, sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon. Generous, fruity and harmonious, it offers a convivial and accessible introduction to the estate's style.

Ornellaia Bianco: the estate's fine white wine, based primarily on sauvignon, rare and highly sought-after. Rich and complex, it displays great aromatic finesse, depth and a fine capacity for ageing.

Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia: the estate's historic white wine, composed mainly of sauvignon with a touch of vermentino and verdicchio from small plots on the Tuscan coast. Fresh and elegant, it charms with its finesse and vivacity.

Ornus dell'Ornellaia: a rare dessert wine crafted from late-harvested petit manseng, sourced from the small Palmetta plot. Produced in extremely limited quantities and only in the finest years, it adds an extra dimension to the range.

Grappa di Ornellaia: a marc brandy produced from the estate's grapes, available notably in a Riserva Eligo version, which elegantly extends the art of living and the expertise of Ornellaia.
