History of Domaine Gangloff

Founded in the 1980s by Yves Gangloff, a native of Alsace, and his wife Mathilde, Domaine Gangloff grew out of a chance encounter and an all-consuming passion for wine. Yves arrived in the region in 1978 to visit his brother Pierre, a painter based at Château d’Ampuis. There he met Mathilde, a spirited woman from Vienne, and decided to settle for good. With no formal qualifications—just a Kerouac book, a guitar slung over his shoulder, and a thirst for adventure—he joined Delas Frères as a vineyard worker, learning the rigors of the trade on the steep slopes of Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie. In 1982, local winemaker Gaston André transferred a few parcels to the couple, marking the beginning of their venture. Until the late 1980s, they sold most of their harvest to merchants such as Guigal while quietly experimenting with making small quantities of wine themselves.

The decisive turning point came in 1987, when the wine merchant defaulted, forcing Yves and Mathilde to vinify and sell their own wines. Their first cuvées were released in 1989 (Côte-Rôtie 1987 and Condrieu 1988), and in 1992 the estate bottled its entire harvest, establishing its wines as benchmarks. Success surged: the Gangloffs acquired new parcels, expanding from their original 1 hectare to around 9 hectares today. Mathilde’s untimely death in 2011 shook the estate, but Yves, supported by his children Elsa (who now makes wine alongside him) and Loup, and his son-in-law Aurélien (who works in the vineyards), carries on the legacy with renewed energy.

Terroirs and vineyards of Domaine Gangloff

Nestled in the heart of Condrieu at the foot of the Côte Bonnette, Domaine Gangloff farms 9 hectares of exceptional, steeply sloping terroir across Condrieu (2.5 hectares), Côte-Rôtie (3.5 hectares), and Saint-Joseph (a more recent 2.5 hectares). Protected by dry-stone walls, these precipitous slopes lie 40 km south of Lyon and enjoy a continental climate moderated by the Rhône, favoring optimal grape ripeness. The soils—a mix of granite, gneiss, mica schist, and quartz—give the wines profound minerality and saline freshness, characteristic of the Côte Blonde’s granite and the Côte Brune’s schist.

The older vines average 40 years of age, with some planted in the 1930s using the local Serine clone. They are farmed with care: the estate is not organically certified but practices natural viticulture, controlling yields to produce healthy, concentrated clusters. In summer, a team of 30 prunes and ties the shoots, while festive, precise hand harvesting captures the essence of the vintage. With south-southeast exposure for the whites and southern exposure for the reds, this Rhône terroir produces wines of remarkable purity. Each cuvée faithfully expresses its vineyard site, from Côteau de Chéry to Combard-Mollard, Rozier, and Tupin.

Winemaking at Domaine Gangloff

Winemaking at Domaine Gangloff is an intuitive dance between tradition and instinct, guided by complete respect for the fruit and terroir. Picked at full ripeness, the grapes arrive as whole clusters for the reds, encouraging gentle infusion, and are delicately pressed for the whites. Only native yeasts drive fermentation, in stainless steel tanks for moderate extraction, with measured pump-overs and punch-downs to preserve finesse and elegance. Intervention is minimal: no excessive clarification, sparing use of sulfur, and aging in 300-liter barrels from Nevers and Allier at the wine’s own pace—12 months for whites and up to 24 months for reds, with a varying proportion of new oak (20–50% depending on the vintage and cuvée).

Since 1996, the red grapes have been partially destemmed, with the approach adapted to each vintage to achieve a silky texture without excessive tannin. This artisanal philosophy, free of rigid formulas, allows the wines to evolve over the years, capturing the soul of the vintage like an improvised concert. For Yves, each harvest is a "concert once a year, with no rehearsal". The result: vibrant, pure wines shaped by their terroir, far removed from industrial uniformity.

The cuvées of Domaine Gangloff

Domaine Gangloff offers a small but emblematic range centered on five flagship cuvées that showcase the Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, and Saint-Joseph AOCs. Produced in limited quantities (around 450 to 650 cases per vintage), these wines are must-haves for anyone buying Rhône wine.

Condrieu Gangloff: an iconic white made from 100% Viognier, sourced from parcels including Côteau de Chéry (south-southeast exposure) and Côte Bonnette (south-southwest), on sandy granite soils. Smooth and floral, it reveals aromas of apricot, honey, and white flowers, lifted by refreshing saline minerality. Barrel-fermented (20–40% new oak) and aged for 12 months, it offers a lingering finish and pairs beautifully with seafood or fresh cheeses. 

Côte-Rôtie La Barbarine: an elegant red made from 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier, from younger vines in the Combard-Mollard and Côte Rozier vineyard sites (with some older parcels more than 50 years old), on the granite and gneiss of the Côte Blonde. Fully destemmed, fermented in stainless steel tanks for three weeks, then aged for 20–23 months in used barrels (2–6 years old). Powerful aromas of black fruit, spice, and violet, with a smooth texture, remarkable finesse, and an exceptionally long finish. 

Côte-Rôtie La Sereine Noire: a prestigious red made from 100% old-vine Syrah (averaging 40–50 years), blending Mollard and Côte Rozier (the schist of the Côte Brune and the granite of the Côte Blonde). Destemmed by 40–50%, vinified in stainless steel for moderate extraction, and aged for 23–24 months in barrels (30–50% new). Distinctive depth and refined aromatic intensity, with wild berries, black olives, and smoky notes, a velvety structure, and complexity that develops over time. 

Saint-Joseph Blanc Gangloff: a recent white blending Marsanne and Roussanne from Saint-Joseph’s granite slopes. Direct pressing, barrel fermentation (20–40% new), and 12 months of aging. Notes of white fruit, citrus, and minerals, with a creamy texture and lively acidity. 

Saint-Joseph Rouge Gangloff: a red made from 100% Syrah from recently acquired parcels on schist and granite. Some whole clusters are retained; the wine undergoes gentle infusion in tanks and ages for 23 months in a mix of barrels. Balanced, with fine tannins, aromas of spiced red fruit, and a mineral finish.
