Wines from Domaine Clape: buy at the best price

The historic buildings of Domaine Auguste Clape date back to the 19th century, and when Antoinette Frugier inherited the estate in 1925, the wines were still sold exclusively to négociants. Her daughter Ariette continued her mother's work in 1949 alongside her husband Auguste Clape, and the estate at that time covered only 4 hectares, but its reputation grew steadily from the 1970s onwards. Pierre Clape, their son, became involved in the property from 1988, continuing the reasoned viticulture approach initiated by his father. The vines are treated with sulphur and copper. In 2002, his son Olivier joined Domaine Auguste Clape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Domaine Auguste Clape was founded in the 19th century, but it was in 1949 that Auguste Clape and his wife Ariette took the reins with just 4 hectares of vines. Visionaries, they established Cornas’s first wine market in 1955 and began bottling their own wines—a revolutionary move when bulk sales were the norm. Their son Pierre joined the estate in 1988, bringing experience gained at Tempier and Vieux Télégraphe; his own son Olivier joined him in 2002. This family continuity, combined with a traditional, uncompromising approach to winemaking, has made Auguste Clape an estate central to the identity of Cornas.

The estate favours simple vinifications with whole clusters and long ageing in multi-vintage barrels. The ageing extends over 12 to 24 months in old oval 1,000-litre foudres, between 30 and 50 years old, promoting a gentle and balanced oxidation. No new oak is used, and cellar intervention remains minimalist. This artisanal approach preserves the authenticity of the Cornas terroir and gives the wines a remarkable capacity for ageing.

Domaine Auguste Clape produces around 35,000 bottles a year across a small range. Its flagship cuvée, Cornas Classique, blends grapes from five or six plots of old vines aged 40 to 90 years, in prized sites such as Reynards, La Côte and Sabarotte. The estate also offers a Cornas Renaissance, a Côtes du Rhône, a Vin des Amis and a white Saint-Péray. Each cuvée strikes a different balance between power and finesse, offering a way to explore the Clape signature at different levels of complexity and aging potential.

Domaine Auguste Clape covers nearly 9 hectares, with 85% devoted to red wine from Syrah in the Cornas appellation and 15% to white wine from Marsanne (12%) and Roussanne (3%) in the Saint-Péray appellation. This dual identity—powerful reds from steep granitic terroirs and elegant whites—makes the estate one of the most versatile producers in the northern Rhône Valley.

The wines of Domaine Auguste Clape are renowned for their exceptional aging potential. This approach, without superfluous intervention, produces sober, complex wines capable of aging for 15 to 25 years. Iconic vintages such as 1989 and 1990 have demonstrated that the finest bottles can evolve over several decades, developing profiles of great complexity, with notes of candied dark fruits, leather, spices, and undergrowth.

For a perfect pairing, serve the Cornas Auguste Clape with red meat dishes in sauce, such as a roast beef or a wild boar stew. The wine's rich and spicy flavors also harmonize beautifully with duck with olives or a cassoulet, as well as with aged cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire or Bleu d'Auvergne. Ideally serve it between 16 and 18 °C, and do not hesitate to decant it for an hour before serving to allow it to fully express itself.

History of Domaine Auguste Clape

The history of Domaine Auguste Clape dates back to the early 19th century, when the Frugier farming family built its historic buildings amid arable plots. Originally a mixed farm growing vines and grain, the estate suffered a severe blow when phylloxera arrived in 1865 and devastated the vineyard, followed by the decline caused by World War I. Henri Frugier tentatively revived 2 hectares in 1890, but the more profitable grain crops took precedence. In 1925, Antoinette Frugier inherited the property and resumed production of bulk wine, sold to merchants in Saint-Péray and restaurants in Valence.

In 1949, Antoinette’s daughter Ariette Frugier and her husband Auguste Clape took the reins with just 4 hectares of vines. Visionaries, they joined their neighbors in 1955 to create Cornas’s first wine market, marking the beginning of bottling the estate’s wines—a revolution at a time when most producers sold in bulk. Exports to England and the United States began in 1970, making it possible to invest in equipment for planting on hillsides in 1975 and gradually abandon other crops. Pierre-Marie Clape joined the estate in 1988, bringing experience from Domaine Tempier and Vieux Télégraphe and introducing a measured approach to viticulture using sulfur and copper. His son Olivier joined the team in 2002 after internships in Napa Valley, Australia and New Zealand. Auguste died in 2018 at the age of 93, and Pierre-Marie tragically passed away in June 2025 at 74, leaving Olivier to carry on this family legacy alone, a symbol of Cornas’s revival.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Auguste Clape

The terroirs of Domaine Auguste Clape are a granitic jewel nestled on the steep slopes of Cornas. Gradients of up to 50–60% make mechanized work impossible, so everything is done by hand to preserve the soil as much as possible. The vines, averaging 45 years old, with some over a century old, extend across emblematic parcels including Reynards, La Côte, Geynale, Tézier, Petite Côte, Les Mazards, Patou, Pied La Vigne, Chaillot and Sabarotte (acquired from Noël Verset). These sandy, weathered granite soils, sometimes mixed with limestone scree or clay, provide ideal drainage and optimal south-southeast exposure to the Rhône Valley sun.

The estate grows mainly Syrah, with a small white-wine parcel of less than one hectare on the well-drained slopes of Saint-Péray, planted to 80–90% Marsanne and 10–20% Roussanne. Practicing a measured, organic-minded approach to viticulture without certification, with minimal amounts of sulfur and copper (1–1.5 kg/ha/year), tiny quantities of organic soil amendments and work done by mule or winch, the vines draw vibrant minerality, rich texture and natural spice from this substratum. This unique terroir lends the wines a rare authenticity, making Domaine Auguste Clape a benchmark.

Winemaking at Domaine Auguste Clape

Winemaking at Domaine Auguste Clape is a minimalist, parcel-by-parcel tribute to tradition, designed to preserve the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Hand harvesting and rigorous selection on the vine lead to whole-cluster fermentation (100%, for fine tannins and an elegant structure), with light initial crushing and indigenous yeasts only. Maceration lasts 6–7 days in concrete tanks, followed by 3–7 days after fermentation, while malolactic fermentation is delayed by one to two months.

The long, unhurried aging lasts 12 to 24 months in old 1,000 L oval foudres (30–50 years old and neutral, allowing gentle, balanced oxidation), sometimes supplemented by an egg-shaped concrete tank or a terracotta jar for the whites. No new oak or excessive press wine: just egg-white fining and moderate sulfuring (around 50 mg/L total). This approach, without unnecessary intervention, produces restrained, complex wines capable of aging for 15–25 years, defying trends with timeless purity.

The cuvées of Domaine Auguste Clape

Domaine Auguste Clape excels with a small range of cuvées, each an expression of its terroir, producing around 35,000 bottles a year.

Cornas Classique: The flagship cuvée, a blend of 5–6 old-vine parcels (40–90 years old, some over a century old, including the original Petite Syrah) from prized sites such as Reynards, La Côte and Sabarotte. Vinified in whole clusters and aged for 18–24 months in old foudres, it offers a deep, opaque color and aromas of dark berries, olive, violet, smoke and spice, with dense tannins that turn velvety after 10–15 years. Powerful yet elegant and rated above 95/100 by critics, it is the essence of Cornas, with exceptional aging potential.

Cornas Renaissance: Made from younger vines (12–30 years old) on the best hillsides and lower slopes, this relatively entry-level cuvée (though remarkably refined) is fermented in whole clusters and aged for 23 months in foudres. More approachable in its youth, with notes of dark fruit, dried herbs and granitic minerality, it can develop over 10–20 years, revealing velvety complexity. It is perfect for discovering the Clape style without waiting.

Le Vin des Amis: A convivial red, blending young Syrah vines from Cornas and neighboring parcels for a fruit-forward wine ready to enjoy. Aged in foudres, it charms with its vitality, dark berries and balance—ideal as an everyday wine with moderate aging potential.

Côtes-du-Rhône: 100% Syrah from 30- to 120-year-old vines near Saint-Péray and declassified Cornas fruit, fermented in whole clusters and aged in foudres. Elegant and versatile, with hints of pepper, dark fruit and smoke, it offers irresistible value for lovers of affordable Rhône wines.

Saint-Péray: A little-known gem, this rare white wine (from less than one hectare) blends Marsanne (80–90%) and Roussanne (10–20%) grown on granite and clay. Vinified in concrete tanks with partial malolactic fermentation and aged for 10 months in foudres, an egg-shaped tank or a jar, it reveals floral depth, pear, honey and mineral spice, with a rich texture and limestone vibrancy. A wine of great scope, like a white Hermitage, for exceptional drinking after 5–10 years.
