Wines from the Domaine du Comte Liger Belair: purchase at the best price

Louis Michel Liger Belair took over the reins of the family estate after several decades of sharecropping in the early 2000s. He thus recovered 3 hectares of exceptionally well-situated vines. Since 2006, he has leased an additional 5.5 hectares, bringing his estate to nearly 9 hectares.

History of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair

The history of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is intimately linked to that of Burgundy and Vosne-Romanée. It all begins in 1815, when Louis Liger-Belair, a Napoleonic general, acquires the Château de Vosne and lays the foundations of a substantial wine estate. Under the direction of his adopted son, Louis-Charles, and thanks to his marriage to Ludovie Marey, from a family of Burgundian négociants since 1720, the estate prospers, expanding at its peak to over 60 hectares, including prestigious parcels such as La Romanée, La Tâche, and Les Malconsorts.

However, in 1933, an auction imposed by succession constraints dispersed a large part of the family heritage. Only La Romanée, Les Reignots, and Les Chaumes were saved by the determined action of two brothers, Just, a priest, and Count Michel. These vines were then entrusted to sharecroppers, while the wines were sold by négociants. It was not until 2000, under the impetus of Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, that the estate truly revived. Trained as an agronomist engineer and oenologist, Louis-Michel resumed complete management of the vines and vinification, restoring the estate to its former glory. In 2015, to celebrate the estate's 200th anniversary, a vertical tasting of 68 vintages of La Romanée was organized, accompanied by a dinner prepared by starred chef Pascal Barbot, marking the triumphant return of this legendary estate.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair derives its greatness from the richness and diversity of its terroirs, located in the prestigious appellations of Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Flagey-Échezeaux. Its 10.5 hectares of vines, cultivated in biodynamics certified by Ecocert (Biodyvin label), benefit from varied soils, ranging from clay marls to limestone rich in ooliths, which give the wines unique complexity and elegance.

Vosne-Romanée: The parcels, such as La Colombière and Clos du Château, rest on clay-silt soils and orange marls, offering round and gourmet wines, marked by red fruit aromas. The Premiers Crus, such as Les Chaumes, Les Petits Monts, Aux Reignots, Les Brûlées, and Les Suchots, benefit from limestone and gravelly soils, producing wines of remarkable finesse and intensity.

Nuits-Saint-Georges: The climats such as Aux Lavières and Aux Cras, as well as the monopole Clos des Grandes Vignes, are distinguished by limestone and stony soils, producing structured wines with notes of musk, cocoa, and leather.

Flagey-Échezeaux: The Echezeaux parcels, located in the Cruots or Vignes Blanches and Champs Traversins climats, offer complementarity between rich and stony soils, producing wines of great elegance and assertive structure.

La Romanée: This Grand Cru monopole, with its 0.8452 hectares, rests on Prémeaux limestone and clay soils, offering incomparable minerality and tension, making this wine a jewel of Burgundy.

The estate favors meticulous soil work, including horse plowing to limit compaction, and uses biodynamic treatments based on plant teas, copper, and sulfur, avoiding all chemicals to preserve the microbial life of the soils.

Vinification at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair

The vinification philosophy of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is based on minimal intervention to allow the terroir and quality of the grapes to fully express themselves. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair considers that 95% of the work is done in the vineyard, with the remaining 5% in the winery being guided by intuition and a fine understanding of each vintage.

The grapes, harvested at optimal maturity, are transported in small 14-kilo crates to avoid crushing, then rigorously sorted by hand. Depending on the cuvées, they are partially or completely destemmed, then sent to the vat by conveyor to preserve their integrity. Cold maceration (below 15°C) for a week promotes delicate aromatic extraction, followed by natural fermentation without added yeasts. Moderate pumping over and punching down are performed, and light chaptalization can be carried out if necessary.

Aging takes place in new barrels, from three different cooperages and forests, with a limited proportion of new wood to preserve the purity of the fruit. Malolactic fermentations occur naturally, and the wines are aged without racking or filtration, lightly sulfited before bottling by gravity. Each cork is inspected and oriented manually to ensure optimal quality. The wines, packaged in wooden cases under tissue paper, rest for two months before shipment, ensuring exceptional stability and finesse.
