Champagne wines from the Champagne House Deutz: buy at the best price

The Champagne house Deutz was founded in 1838 by William Deutz, and remained within the family fold for one and a half centuries until its acquisition in 1993 by the house Louis Roederer (the Rouzaud family, who also own Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac in the Bordeaux region, as well as Maison Delas in the Rhône). The Deutz house is located very close to Épernay, in Ay, the home of pinot noir. The iconic cuvées of the Deutz house are: Amour de Deutz, William Deutz, the vintage Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs, and of course the "Brut Classic", which alone accounts for nearly 85% of the total production of Champagne Deutz.

History of Champagne Deutz

It all begins with the meeting of two young Prussians from Aachen, William Deutz born in 1809 and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann born in 1810. Drawn by the prosperity of France under Louis-Philippe, they settled in Champagne around 1830. Deutz became a sales representative for the house of Bollinger in 1832, while Geldermann worked as a wine merchant. On discovering the hillsides of Aÿ, William Deutz was struck by the splendour of the site and conceived a clear ambition: to reveal to the world the quintessence of the Champagne terroirs.

In 1838, the two partners opened their négociant house on rue Jeanson in Aÿ. They began by purchasing cuvées already drawn onto laths to supply their export office to Germany, before gradually acquiring their own vineyards, convinced that the quality of wine is born first and foremost from the soil. The alliance of Germanic technical rigour and French refinement forged a lasting identity, and the house became fully rooted in Champagne when the descendants married into local vine-owning families. Supplier to several European courts at the turn of the twentieth century, Deutz joined the Louis Roederer family group in 1993 while retaining its stylistic autonomy and its anchor in Aÿ. Since 2022, Caroline Latrive has held the position of cellar master and has brought to the house a resolutely contemporary creative energy.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Champagne Deutz

Aÿ holds a singular place in the Champagne hierarchy: it is the only village classified one hundred per cent Grand Cru for both of the region's noble grape varieties, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The historic cradle of grower Champagne, it yields Pinot Noirs of a singular salinity and elegance, the backbone of the Deutz style. The house notably owns two emblematic parcels there: La Côte Glacière, adjoining the buildings, facing due south on a spectacular twenty-five per cent slope and planted with old vines, and Meurtet, east-facing, which receives the gentleness of the morning sun.

Beyond its own vineyard holdings, Deutz sources fruit within a radius of around twenty kilometres around Aÿ, from long-standing partners and predominantly from Grands and Premiers Crus. The palette covers the Montagne de Reims with Verzenay, Verzy, Ludes, Trépail, Bouzy and Ambonnay, the Vallée de la Marne with Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Bisseuil, Avenay, Damery, Troissy and Châtillon-sur-Marne, and the Côte des Blancs with Avize, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Villeneuve-Renneville. Committed to sustainable and environmentally responsible viticulture, the house holds the dual certification of Haute Valeur Environnementale and Viticulture Durable en Champagne, and is pursuing a gradual transition to organic farming across its parcels.

Winemaking at Champagne Deutz

The winemaking remains deliberately traditional and free from any marked oak influence, the priority being to preserve the purity and aromatic freshness of the fruit. Each cru and each grape variety is vinified separately, offering the cellar master an exceptional palette of more than two hundred and twenty tanks drawn from ninety crus at the time of blending. This approach makes the assemblage a true act of creation, where technique serves inspiration and each harvest becomes a new page to be written.

Time is the third pillar of the house. The cuvées rest in the historic cellars carved thirty metres underground into the chalk, where naturally constant temperature and humidity provide ideal conditions for the slow autolysis of the wines on lees. Three years for the multi-vintage cuvées, five years for the vintage wines, six years for the single-parcel wines and up to nine or ten years for the prestige cuvées: these ageing periods, far exceeding the regulatory minimums, shape the subtle balance between power and finesse that defines the Deutz style. A library cellar also preserves the greatest vintages produced since the founding of the house.

The cuvées of Champagne Deutz

Deutz Brut Classic: the first cuvée produced each year and the signature of the house, dominated by Chardonnay and complemented by Pinot Noir and Meunier, with reserve wines drawn from selected vintages. Deep golden colour, floral bouquet of hawthorn evolving towards toasted bread, almond paste and ripe fruit, silky palate combining freshness and vinosity. Three years of ageing in the cellars.

Deutz Brut Rosé: a one hundred per cent Grands and Premiers Crus cuvée uniting the finesse of Pinot Noirs from Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ with the crystalline brilliance of Chardonnays from the Côte des Blancs. Luminous pale rose, a basket of crunchy small red fruits, yellow apple, rhubarb and violet, a tangy and mouth-watering texture lifted by a hint of black pepper on the finish. Three years in the cellars.

Deutz Brut Rosé Édition Sakura: a limited-edition presentation of the Brut Rosé, inspired by the fleeting beauty of cherry blossom and the arrival of spring. The wine retains the same precision and balance, in a bottle that has become a collector's item for admirers of the house.

Hommage à William Deutz, Meurtet: a single-parcel blanc de noirs from the 2.4-hectare Meurtet parcel in Aÿ Grand Cru, east-facing. One hundred per cent Pinot Noir, six years in the cellars. Pale gold colour, brilliant nose of redcurrant and wild strawberry, velvety texture, flavours of vineyard peach and mango, charming salinity and mouth-watering bitterness. A demonstration of the magic of the Aÿ terroir.

Hommage à William Deutz, La Côte Glacière: the second single-parcel wine in the series, born from 1.9 hectares of a due-south parcel adjoining the house, where the slope reaches twenty-five per cent. The old Pinot Noir vines here yield wines of a solar power. Concentrated black fruits, bitter chocolate, richness and freshness intertwined, long finish with an iodine signature. Six years of ageing.

Brut Millésimé: a true quiet force, dominated by Grand Cru Pinot Noirs and complemented by Chardonnay from Grands and Premiers Crus. Luminous gold, bouquet of baked apple, poached pear and candied orange lifted by roasted almond and toasted notes, velvety palate with a saline and chalky texture, long and dynamic finish. Five years in the cellars.

Rosé Millésimé: a gastronomic rosé built predominantly on Pinot Noir, with a portion of red wine from historic parcels in Aÿ. Lightly copper-tinged golden-pink colour, a basket of ripe red fruits, redcurrant, vineyard peach and rose, an ample and silky attack, complex finish of bitter chocolate and bigarreau cherry. Five years of ageing.

Blanc de Blancs Millésimé: a crystalline expression of the finest Chardonnays, sourced entirely from Grands and Premiers Crus. Pale gold with silvery highlights, nose of white flowers and jasmine, citrus and white pepper, taut and concentrated palate with a velvety texture, energetic, saline and mineral finish underscored by noble bitterness. Five years in the cellars.

William Deutz: a majestic cuvée paying tribute to the founder, honouring the great Pinot Noirs of the Montagne de Reims sublimated by equally distinguished Chardonnays, with three to five per cent Meunier. Deep gold, a dense bouquet of compoted exotic fruits, roasted hazelnut, frangipane and liquorice, noble and enveloping texture. Ten years of maturation in the cellars.

Amour de Deutz: the prestige cuvée created in 1993, a vintage blanc de blancs of one hundred per cent Chardonnay, sourced predominantly from the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs with a touch of Premiers Crus from the Montagne de Reims. Hawthorn, acacia and orange blossom, yellow fruits and candied citrus, brioche and honeyed touches, luminous tension and subtle salinity. A minimum of nine years of ageing.

Amour de Deutz Rosé: a highly sought-after rarity, combining the nobility of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from great origins in exceptional vintages. Delicate pale rose, aromas of wild strawberry, tangy redcurrant, freshly picked rose and blood orange, silky and fluid texture, iodine-tinged and saline finish of great elegance. Nine years in the cellars.
