History of Domaine Sérafin

The history of Domaine Sérafin begins with Stanislaus Sérafin, a Polish immigrant who arrived in France in the 1930s. After overcoming the hardships of the Second World War, including captivity in Germany, Stanislaus settled in Gevrey-Chambertin and acquired his first vine parcels at modest prices, laying the foundations of the estate in 1947. A self-taught enthusiast, he learned the art of viticulture and built, together with his son Christian, a house and cellar at the foot of the prestigious Premier Cru Les Cazetiers. In the 1980s, Christian modernized the estate by developing on-site bottling and initiating the export of wines, earning international recognition, notably through the praise of the Parker guide.

Since 1988, when Christian officially took over the leadership of the estate, he has enriched the vineyard through the acquisition of parcels in Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny. Today, Karine Sérafin, his daughter, manages the commercial and administrative aspects of the estate, while his niece, Frédérique Goulley, oversees viticulture and winemaking. Together, they perpetuate the family legacy with an unwavering commitment to quality and tradition, while integrating modern practices that respect the environment. This story of resilience and passion makes Domaine Sérafin Père & Fils an estate prized for the purchase of Burgundy wine.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Sérafin

Domaine Sérafin spans 6 hectares of vines spread across the prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits: Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, and Morey-Saint-Denis. These exceptional terroirs, among the most renowned in Burgundy, offer ideal conditions for growing Pinot Noir. The soils, composed of a perfect balance of clay, limestone, and rock, lend the wines a unique complexity and minerality. The vines, some of which date back to 1946, are among the oldest in the region, contributing to the richness and concentration of the cuvées.

The estate owns parcels in iconic crus, including the Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin, as well as the Premiers Crus Les Cazetiers, Les Corbeaux, Fonteny in Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Baudes in Chambolle-Musigny, and Les Milandes in Morey-Saint-Denis. Each parcel benefits from a specific microclimate, such as that of Fonteny, which enjoys good airflow while retaining the warmth of the east-facing slopes. This diversity of terroirs allows the estate to produce wines that fully express the typicity of each appellation, making the purchase of a wine from Domaine Sérafin a unique experience for Burgundy enthusiasts.

Vinifications of Domaine Sérafin

The winemaking philosophy of Domaine Sérafin is founded on a deep respect for the terroir and an artisanal approach. The estate practices reasoned viticulture, close to organic, without formal certification. Frédérique Goulley, the winemaker, favors natural methods, avoiding herbicides and chemical fertilizers in favor of solutions such as sulfur, copper, and plant-based preparations. The harvests, carried out by hand, guarantee a rigorous selection of grapes at perfect maturity, essential for producing generous and structured wines.

In the cellar, traditional winemaking is at the heart of the process. The grapes are fully destemmed, and fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts to preserve the authenticity of the aromas. The Grands Crus, Premiers Crus, and Vieilles Vignes cuvées are aged in 100% new French oak barrels, carefully selected from renowned coopers such as François Frères and Taransaud. This masterfully integrated use of wood, with a light toast, lends the wines an elegant tannic structure and remarkable length on the palate. Unfiltered, the estate's wines retain all their richness and character, ideal for extended aging.

The cuvées of Domaine Sérafin

Domaine Sérafin offers a range of nine cuvées, all made from Pinot Noir, reflecting the diversity and richness of the terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. Here is a detailed presentation of each appellation for an exceptional wine purchase:

Bourgogne Rouge: This wine, crafted from two parcels (including one of old vines over 50 years old), offers aromas of dark fruit, plum, and an earthy touch reminiscent of mushroom. Its dense structure and rustic finish make it a Village-level wine, perfect for aging over 10 years.

Gevrey-Chambertin Village: From vines over 40 years old, this wine reveals notes of black cherry, damp tobacco, and leather, with a complex minerality. Aged 16 months in 70% new oak barrels, it offers a power and depth worthy of the finest crus.

Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes: Produced from vines aged 70 to 100 years, this wine stands out for its robust flavors of dark fruit, licorice, and undergrowth. Aged 18 months in 100% new oak, it is designed for aging of more than 10 years.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers: This cru, from vines aged 60 to 85 years, unveils aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and earth, with a deep minerality. Aged 19 months in new oak, it is one of the flagship wines of the estate, acclaimed for its aging potential.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux: This wine, produced on an enclosed parcel of 0.45 hectare, offers intense flavors of dense red fruit and a floral touch. Aged 18 months in new oak, it combines austerity and elegance, ideal for long aging.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Fonteny: From a 0.33-hectare parcel, this cru captivates with its refined nose of cherry, blackcurrant, and spices. Its firm structure and marked minerality make it a wine to discover after several years of cellaring.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes: Located at the foot of the Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares, this wine offers aromas of wild fruit, violet, and spices. Aged 18 months in new oak, it captivates with its balance and freshness, with fewer than 200 cases produced per year.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Milandes: This cru, from vines over 50 years old, unveils notes of black cherry, plum, and undergrowth. Aged 18 months in new oak, it offers a muscular structure and a slightly rustic finish, promising a fine future.

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru: The jewel of the estate, this Grand Cru (0.31 hectare) combines aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, and wild notes. Aged 19 months in new oak, it impresses with its juicy texture and exceptional aging potential.

Domaine Sérafin is a gem of the Côte de Nuits, where passion, tradition, and respect for the terroir combine to produce exceptional wines. Whether you are a lover of Grands Crus, Premiers Crus, or more accessible cuvées, every bottle from the estate embodies the elegance and complexity of Burgundian Pinot Noir.
