The History of Roagna

Domaine Roagna traces its roots to the village of Barbaresco, where Vincenzo Roagna founded it at the very beginning of the 20th century. The torch then passed to his son Giovanni and later to Alfredo, who built the house’s reputation and created the Opera Prima cuvée. Today, the estate is run by fifth-generation Luca Roagna, born in 1980, who took charge of winemaking as soon as he earned his enology degree in 2001.

A major turning point came in 1989, when the family fulfilled its dream of acquiring great Barolo vineyards by purchasing the historic La Rocca e La Pira plot in Castiglione Falletto, near the fortress. The name Pira gradually came to designate this magnificent terroir. Beginning in 2004, the estate started vinifying each of its crus separately—Asili, Montefico, Pajè, and Pira—before adding the Albesani cru in Neive in 2014. The wines’ deeply classic style has been faithfully passed down through five generations.

Roagna Terroirs and Vineyards

At the heart of the estate are approximately six and a half hectares of vines in the village of Barbaresco, primarily in the Pajè cru, complemented by the Asili, Montefico, Albesani, and Gallina crus. In Castiglione Falletto, the Pira monopole, sheltered by Rocche di Castiglione above and a small wood below, offers ideal terroir for viticulture that respects the life of the soil.

The soils, rich in active limestone, give Nebbiolo considerable structure and extraordinary aging potential. The estate stands out for the venerable age of its vines, some of which are over eighty years old, its very high planting density, and its near-organic approach, with no chemical products and natural ground cover. Alongside Nebbiolo, the estate also grows Barbera, Dolcetto, a little Chardonnay planted in the 1980s, and, farther afield, Timorasso in the Colli Tortonesi.

Winemaking at Roagna

Winemaking at Roagna remains absolutely faithful to tradition. Fermentation takes place exclusively in wooden vats, initiated with a starter culture of indigenous yeasts, and lasts around ten days. This is followed by the traditional submerged-cap maceration technique, which lasts sixty to ninety days and allows for exceptionally gentle extraction.

The wines are then aged for a very long time in neutral oak casks and concrete tanks: at least four to five years, and up to a decade for the rarest cuvées, such as Crichët Pajè and Pira Riserva. This patience gives the wines remarkable finesse, complexity, and delicacy while preserving the original aroma of Nebbiolo. The result is a range of deep, structured wines built to last for decades.

Roagna’s Cuvées

Barbaresco Pajè: a cuvée from the historic Pajè cru, made from vines aged twenty-five to fifty years, with fewer than ten thousand bottles produced annually. Structured and distinguished, it is the estate’s benchmark expression of Barbaresco.

Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti: a selection from vines over fifty years old, with an imposing tannic structure and rich texture, limited to a few thousand bottles.

Barbaresco Crichët Pajè: the estate’s definitive icon, from the ridge of the Pajè cru and vines over sixty years old. Production rarely exceeds two thousand bottles, and the wine is aged for around a decade before release.

Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti: from a small, sandy-soil plot planted with old Nebbiolo vines and aged four to six years in French and Slovenian oak casks, combining structure, character, and aromatic delicacy.

Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti: an exceptionally rare cuvée, with barely a thousand bottles produced each year, distinguished by its particularly fragrant character and great finesse.

Barbaresco Albesani: from the village of Neive, this historic vineyard site has been cultivated by the family since 2014. Elegant and deep.

Barbaresco Gallina: another Neive cru that adds its own aromatic personality to the estate’s range of Barbaresco wines.

Barolo Pira: a Barolo from the Castiglione Falletto monopole, made from vines over twenty-five years old, with great purity and the ability to age for many years.

Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti: a selection of old vines from Pira, limited to a maximum of three thousand bottles a year, with greater concentration and depth.

Barolo La Pira Riserva: from the historic Castiglione Falletto vineyard, this Barolo is aged for an exceptionally long period of around ten years before release, offering a fully realized expression of its terroir.

Barolo Rocche di Castiglione: a cuvée from the renowned Rocche di Castiglione Falletto cru, bringing finesse and minerality to the estate’s Barolo range.

Opera Prima: a legendary cuvée created by Alfredo Roagna. A blend of Nebbiolo from several vintages made according to a solera principle, it has no vintage designation and offers great complexity and a character all its own.

Langhe Nebbiolo: made from young vines in the Pira and Pajè crus, this more approachable Nebbiolo offers a superb introduction to the estate’s aromatic, complex style.

Barbera d’Alba: an expressive, flavorful wine with vibrant fruit and lively acidity, true to the house’s traditional style.

Solea: the estate’s white wine, a fresh and original blend dominated by Chardonnay planted in the 1980s, with Nebbiolo.

Derthona Montemarzino: a white wine made from Timorasso grown in the Colli Tortonesi, adding a fine, mineral white with aging potential to the range.

Barolo Chinato: a Piedmontese specialty made from Barolo flavored with bark and spices. Perfect as a digestif, it carries on the estate’s historic know-how.
