History of G.B. Burlotto

The G.B. Burlotto winery dates back to 1850, when Giovan Battista Burlotto founded the estate in Verduno, a small but historically significant village in the Barolo appellation. Housed in an elegant 18th-century building adorned with 32 medals, witnesses to its early successes, the winery emerged during a transformative era in Italy, before the country's unification. Initially, the Burlotto family practiced diversified agriculture, but Giovan Battista's visionary turn toward viticulture marked the beginning of a legacy that would elevate Verduno's status alongside Barolo giants such as Serralunga and La Morra.

Giovan Battista, later honored with the title of "Commendatore" for his contributions to the region, was a pioneer. He championed the indigenous grape varieties of the Langhe, expanded the family vineyards, and introduced bottled Barolo, a bold break from the traditions of the time favoring barrels and demijohns. His efforts earned G.B. Burlotto the prestigious role of official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy and, in 1899, the distinction of providing wine for the Duke of Abruzzi's Arctic expedition to the North Pole. With more than 32 international medals, the winery's reputation extended beyond Italy, rivaling contemporaries such as Biondi-Santi and Vega Sicilia in a wine world dominated by France.

After Giovan Battista's death in 1927, the estate passed to his son Francesco, whose untimely death left it in the hands of his grandson Ignazio. Faced with the challenges of wartime Italy, Ignazio heroically preserved the rare Pelaverga grape variety, at one point becoming its sole producer and ensuring its survival as the "jewel of Verduno". In 1968, at only 17 years old, Ignazio's daughter, Marina, took the reins, navigating through economic difficulties with the help of her husband, Giuseppe Alessandria. Their perseverance laid the foundation for a renaissance under their son Fabio Alessandria, who joined the business in the early 2000s. Today, Fabio, a fifth-generation winemaker, has propelled G.B. Burlotto back to the forefront, achieving perfect scores for wines such as Barolo Monvigliero and consolidating its status as a Piedmontese icon.

Terroirs and Vineyards of G.B. Burlotto

Spanning just over 16 hectares across 14 crus in four municipalities, Verduno, Barolo, Monforte d'Alba, and Roddi, G.B. Neirane, Rocche dell'Olmo, Boscatto, and Breri

Cannubi

In the commune of Barolo, G.B. Burlotto owns 0.7 hectares in Cannubi Valletta, a historic cru dating from the 18th century. Castelletto
