Les autres appelations

The white wines produced in these 5 communes are classified under the Bordeaux AC appellation because white grape varieties are prohibited in the Margaux AOC. Margaux red wines are blends of several grape varieties, with the two main ones being Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They are complemented by small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The diversity of soils or the heterogeneity of Margaux wines may seem complex, but the great red wines of Margaux enjoy a (worldwide) reputation for finesse, and the intensity of their aromas will immediately captivate any discerning enthusiast. The typical Margaux red wine has a dark ruby colour and charms with the suppleness and smoothness of its tannins, accompanied by notes of licorice, cedar, and spices, with a texture silkier than its counterparts located a bit further north in the Médoc, such as the wines of Saint Julien or Pauillac.

The best Margaux wines are produced on the well-drained gravelly slopes (light soils) near the river, sometimes leading to less brilliant results in the hottest and driest years like 1982, 1990, and 2003. The aging potential of Margaux wine bottles is generally lower (10 to 20 years in the cellar) than that of great Pauillac wines (excluding Château Margaux, which can age up to 35 years and more). The lighter profile of Margaux red wines pairs well with game birds, veal, or a leg of lamb, and even with Saint Nectaire cheese, in terms of food and wine pairings.

In the 1855 classification of the 21 classified growths of Margaux, one can find the prestigious Château Margaux (1st classified growth in the 1855 Médoc wine classification), along with châteaux Brane Cantenac, Dufort Vivens, Lacombes, Rauzan Gassies, and Rauzan Ségla (classified as second growths), followed by 3rd growths such as D’Issan, Giscours, Kirwan, Malescot St Exupéry, Palmer, followed by 4th and 5th growths and Crus Bourgeois. Among the best vintages of the Margaux appellation are: 2015, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2000, 1996, 1990, 1986, 1983, 1961, 1959... Château Margaux has even received the perfect score of 100/100 from Parker twice in 1990 and 2000. Buying a bottle of Margaux wine will be a safe bet, as the appellation produces excellent bottles of great finesse that will delight even the most discerning palates.
