History of Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy

The history of Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy takes root at the end of the 19th century in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. Founded with the intention of cultivating vines in strict respect of Burgundian terroir, the estate has been passed down through generations without ever deviating from its founding values. Today, it is Philippe Harmand, the fifth generation of the family, who leads the estate with the same passion and humility that have always characterized this discreet but admired house.

For over a century, Harmand-Geoffroy has built its reputation not in media fanfare, but in the silence of the cellars and the rigor of the vineyards. Gérard Harmand, Philippe's father, played a decisive role in structuring the current estate, refining cultivation practices and defining the stylistic identity of its wines: finesse, energy, and irreproachable terroir expression. Generational continuity here is much more than a tradition; it is the guarantee of a long-term vision of viticulture, in which each vintage is conceived to stand the test of time.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy

All 9 hectares of Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy are located within the boundaries of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation alone, which gives this property remarkable consistency of style and identity. All the soils are predominantly clay-limestone, typical of the Côte de Nuits, and offer Pinot Noir ideal conditions to develop its aromatic complexity and tannic depth.

The estate's vines average approximately fifty years old, with the oldest vines reaching 80 to 90 years. This precious plant heritage is the key to the concentration and minerality that distinguish Harmand-Geoffroy wines. Old vines naturally develop controlled yields and grapes of exceptional quality.

The management of the vineyard is based on a resolutely traditional and reasoned approach. The estate uses neither herbicides, nor chemical fertilizers, nor insecticides or acaricides. The soil is worked mechanically and manually to encourage deep rooting of the vines and to allow the typicity of the different parcels to fully express itself. Disbudding, double pruning on canes and green harvesting control yields and guarantee optimal maturity for each harvest. Harvesting is entirely manual, with rigorous sorting carried out directly in the vineyards.

The estate cultivates parcels distributed across several exceptional lieu-dits and appellations: from Gevrey-Chambertin village to the grand cru Mazis-Chambertin, including several of the appellation's most highly rated premier crus.

Winemaking at Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy

In the cellar, Philippe Harmand applies a winemaking philosophy as traditional as in the vineyards, guided by the constant concern to preserve the expression of terroirs and the purity of the fruit. The harvest is 100% destemmed before entering temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for cold pre-fermentation maceration that can last up to five days. This delicate stage extracts color and aromas without harshly affecting the tannins.

Alcoholic fermentation then begins spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grapes, for a maceration period of between 15 and 21 days depending on the cru and the vintage. Punching down and pumping over are carried out according to the characteristics of each harvest. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels, allowing for progressive and harmonious integration of the wood.

Aging lasts approximately 16 months on fine lees, in 228-liter oak barrels. The proportion of new oak varies according to the importance of the cuvées: approximately 20 to 30% for village wines, 30 to 40% for premier crus, and up to 80% for grand crus. Racking is done by gravity, and the wines are bottled without filtration in order to preserve all their aromatic richness and aging potential. It is recommended to decant the estate's wines before serving to reveal all their aromas.

The Cuvées of Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy

Gevrey-Chambertin Village

A true showcase of the appellation, this Gevrey-Chambertin village wine is blended from several parcels distributed throughout the commune. With vines ranging from around twenty years old to over 90 years old, this cuvée generously expresses the quintessence of Gevrey's terroir. On the nose, wild red fruits, beautiful minerality and a spicy foundation. On the palate, a forthright entry, silky texture and persistent length.

Gevrey-Chambertin Old Vines

This cuvée comes from parcels comprising the estate's oldest vines. It is distinguished by increased concentration, superior density of matter and a sharp minerality characteristic of old vines. More structured than the classic village wine, this Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes reveals its full dimension after several years of aging, sublimating aromas of black fruits, licorice and sweet spices.

Gevrey-Chambertin "Clos Prieur"

Coming from a parcel adjacent to Clos Prieur du Haut (classified as premier cru) and Clos Prieur du Bas (classified as village), Philippe Harmand made the choice to vinify them together to produce a village wine of superior quality. The vines, aged 50 to over 80 years, yield a wine that is both elegant and powerful, with round and melted tannins, and open, generous fruit. Considered by many enthusiasts as one of the finest village wines in the entire appellation.

Gevrey-Chambertin "En Jouise"

The "En Jouise" parcel is one of the estate's most important with more than one hectare under cultivation. Located at the foot of Clos Prieur, it benefits from pronounced clay-limestone soil and vines planted between 60 and 80 years ago. The resulting wine is remarkably refined, with silky tannins, an elegant palate and seductive fruit expression from a young age, while possessing beautiful aging potential.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Champeaux"

Located on the heights of the Combe de Lavaux, in the northwest sector of Gevrey-Chambertin, the "Les Champeaux" climat produces wines of remarkable nobility and complexity. Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy cultivates just over 20 ares of vines there, some planted more than 80 years ago. The wine offers a fascinating combination of power and finesse, with chiseled minerality, a bouquet of intense red fruits and persistent tannic structure.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "La Bossière" (Monopole)

La Bossière is the jewel of Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy: it is the only premier cru of the appellation to belong exclusively to the estate as a monopole, located at the top of the Combe de Lavaux. This particular climat, slightly cooler than its neighbors, gives birth to a wine of elegant austerity, dominated by wild red fruits, floral notes and a distinctive mineral tension. The vines, still relatively young compared to the estate's other parcels, are destined to gain depth and complexity with time. A wine of unique character, the estate's absolute signature.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "La Perrière"

This premier cru is located just below Mazis-Chambertin, in the southern sector of Gevrey-Chambertin, an area renowned for wines of great finesse. La Perrière produces an elegant and precise wine, with a silky texture, aromas of red cherries, violet and a touch of refined undergrowth. The proximity of the grand cru Mazis confers a certain prestige to this parcel, and the wine has beautiful aging potential.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Lavaux Saint-Jacques"

Lavaux Saint-Jacques is one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most renowned premier crus, backed against the mountain's foothills. Harmand-Geoffroy offers an interpretation of great purity, combining concentrated matter with aerial elegance. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry and licorice are supported by a spicy and mineral foundation. This generous and well-structured wine deserves several years of aging to reveal its full complexity and potential.

Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

The pinnacle of the Harmand-Geoffroy range, the Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from a parcel of more than 75 ares planted with vines aged 40 to 75 years, facing due east on well-drained calcareous marl soils. This Burgundian grand cru offers a profile that is both powerful and distinguished: in its youth, notes of raspberry, red cherry and violet mingle with accents of clove and rose. With age, the wine develops nuances of pepper, licorice and leather, revealing all the complexity of the great terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.
