The Domaine Pierre Gonon is located in Mauves, in Ardèche, at the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation, in the northern Rhône Valley. This area, the historic birthplace of the AOC, extends across the steep hillsides of Mauves, Tournon and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, facing the famous hill of the Hermitage, with which it shares the same granitic bedrock. 

Domaine Pierre Gonon draws on the emblematic grape varieties of the northern Rhône Valley. The red Saint-Joseph is crafted from Syrah vines of around 40 years old, planted on steep granite terraces. For the white Saint-Joseph "Les Oliviers", the estate blends Marsanne, planted in 1958 by father Pierre, and Roussanne introduced in 1974, co-fermented and aged in neutral large barrels.

Domaine Pierre Gonon draws on three main terroirs: the « Les Oliviers » site near Tournon, with red clay soils scattered with pebbles; parcels in the heart of the appellation on highly granitic soils; and vineyards on gneiss in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, home to the estate’s oldest vines. These parcels also include Aubert’s former vineyard, planted in 1915 by Raymond Trollat and purchased by the Gonon brothers when he retired in 2006. 

The Gonon brothers have cultivated their vines without chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides since 2004, using entirely natural composts. Official organic certification was obtained in 2010. This rigorous environmental approach has been at the heart of Domaine Pierre Gonon's identity for more than two decades.

The Gonon brothers ferment their reds in the traditional manner in open oak vats, with regular foot-treading, and include a high proportion of whole stems, as was the ancient custom in the region. The wine is then aged in one- to two-wine barrels for 18 months. This minimalist approach gives the wines of Domaine Pierre Gonon their characteristic aromas of black olive, violet and pepper.

The red Saint-Joseph from Domaine Pierre Gonon is a wine made to age. Experts recommend leaving it in the cellar for around fifteen years before opening, with a peak estimated at around 2037–2040 for recent vintages. Its dense palate, structured by fine tannins and endowed with a striking minerality, gives it a remarkable ageing potential.

Vineyard and Terroir

The estate’s vines are planted on the steep terroirs of Mauves, characterised by clay-limestone soils that are ideal for the region’s emblematic grape variety, Syrah. The Gonon brothers take a meticulous approach to viticulture, favouring manual work and respect for biodiversity. Grass cover, winch ploughing and composting are integral to their vineyard practices, reflecting their commitment to preserving the vineyard ecosystem.

Estate Cuvées

Domaine Pierre Gonon offers a range of cuvées that faithfully reflect the richness and diversity of Saint-Joseph’s terroirs. Its flagship cuvées include red and white Saint-Joseph, as well as special cuvées such as "Les Oliviers". The wines stand out for their power, elegance and ability to age gracefully. The whites, from old Marsanne and Roussanne vines, offer subtle aromas and a balanced structure, while the reds, dominated by Syrah, express all the typicity and complexity of the region’s great wines.

The Northern Rhône Valley

The Rhône Valley is a renowned and diverse wine region, celebrated for the quality of its red, white and rosé wines. Among the most prestigious appellations of the Northern Rhône Valley are Côte Rôtie, Cornas, Hermitage and Condrieu, followed by Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Péray.

The Northern Rhône Valley, also known as the Northern Rhône, is renowned for its elegant, expressive wines, mainly made from grape varieties such as Syrah and Viognier. Here are the main wine styles of this region by appellation:
