Founded in 1626 by Jean Trimbach, Maison Trimbach counts twelve generations of winemakers, distinguished by their rigour and passion for the wines of Alsace. Among them, Jean Louis Trimbach, born in 1783, whose son Jean Frédéric, born in 1811, played an important role in the "gourmetage" of the wines of Hunawihr, renowned for its Rieslings. His eldest son, Frédéric Emile, born in 1839, succeeded his father and gave a real boost to the reputation of Maison Trimbach's wines.
The history of Maison Trimbach is a wine-making epic dating back to 1626, when Jean Trimbach, freshly received as a citizen in Riquewihr after arriving from Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, laid the foundations of what would become a pillar of Alsace wines. Through the twelve generations that followed, the estate established itself as a devoted ambassador of the region, traversing wars and societal changes with unwavering rigor. In the 19th century, Jean-Frédéric Trimbach, born in 1811, elevated Alsatian viticulture by contributing to the renown of the crus from the Ribeauvillé fault zone, famous for its exceptional Rieslings
His son, Frédéric Emile, born in 1839, marks a decisive turning point: visionary and refined taster, he obtained in 1898 a prestigious diploma of honor at the International Fair in Brussels, rewarding his wines and placing Trimbach on the world map of great wines. Shortly after World War I, in 1920, Frédéric Théodore Trimbach, born in 1875 and co-founder of the Syndicat des Négociants et Viticulteurs d'Alsace, transferred the estate to Ribeauvillé, consolidating its establishment in this fairy-tale-like town. The following decades saw its rise: in 1919 the iconic label of Riesling Clos Sainte Hune was born, while in 1967 the Cuvée Frédéric Emile emerged. In the 1950s, Bernard Trimbach took the reins after his father Pierre's death in 1945, assisted by his brother Hubert, who excelled in international marketing from 1963. Today, Pierre and Jean Trimbach, joined by the 13th generation, Anne (sales and export), Frédérique (purchasing and communication), Julien (vineyards and cellar), and Pauline (French market), perpetuate this saga with assured modernity.
The Trimbach estate's vineyards extend over approximately 60 hectares of owned property, supplemented by grape purchases, covering more than 50 parcels in villages such as Ribeauvillé, Bergheim, and Hunawihr. Situated on the Ribeauvillé fault, this unique terroir offers a mosaic of predominantly limestone soils, with marly-sandstone, granitic, and migmatite influences, favoring intense mineral expression in the wines. Protected by the Vosges, the semi-continental microclimate ensures warm summers, dry autumns, and low rainfall, ideal for optimal maturity. The vines, averaging 45 years old, are planted at high density (5,500 to 6,000 vines/ha) through massal selection, with a predominance of Riesling (43%), followed by Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and a touch of Muscat. Committed to sustainable farming for decades, Trimbach has been certified organic since 2023, integrating practices such as sheep grazing for grass management, tree planting for biodiversity, and natural treatments, ensuring terroir-respectful wines.
Vinification at Trimbach combines tradition and precision to enhance each terroir. Manual harvesting, carried out by a dedicated team, ensures rigorous grape selection, with moderate yields for optimal concentration. The juices, obtained through gentle pressing, descend by gravity to the cellar where they ferment slowly in stainless steel tanks or old foudres, without chaptalization or malolactic fermentation for the whites, thus preserving freshness and acidity. Aging on fine lees, adapted to each cuvée, reinforces structure and minerality, followed by gentle filtration before bottling the following spring. This meticulous approach, supervised by Pierre and Julien Trimbach, produces over one million bottles annually, dry and taut wines, perfect for aging. For enthusiasts seeking to purchase Alsace wine, this traditional vinification offers cuvées of exemplary straightness, reflecting the estate's soul.
Maison Trimbach presents its wines in five harmonious ranges, from essential Classics to luxurious Vendanges Tardives and Sélections de Grains Nobles, covering Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Blanc, Sylvaner, and Muscat, with an emphasis on dry and gastronomic cuvées.
Among the jewels, Riesling Clos Sainte Hune, a family monopole for over 200 years on 1.67 ha within the Grand Cru Rosacker in Hunawihr, is a global icon: facing south-southeast on deep limestone soils (Muschelkalk and Lettenkohle), with vines aged 50-80 years, it produces only 7,000 bottles annually of a dry, concentrated wine with electric minerality. Harvested late in a cool, windy meso-climate, vinified in stainless steel on lees for absolute purity, it unfolds infinite length, ripe fruits, and mystical energy, legendary since its 1919 label, reaching its peak after 8-10 years, with exceptional aging potential (up to 50 years for great vintages like 1979). Perfect pairings with caviar or lobster.
Equally legendary, the Cuvée Frédéric Emile (or "FE"), the signature since 1967, blends the Grands Crus Geisberg and Osterberg from Ribeauvillé (facing south-southeast on limestone marls and sandstone, vines aged 45 years), offering a powerful, chiseled, and mineral Riesling with exceptional value for money. Dry and taut, with fine acidity and notes of white fruits, it ages 20 years and more, ideal for white meats or noble fish.
The Riesling & Grands Crus Collection is enriched with gems such as Mandelberg (stony soil, aging potential 10-15 years), Schlossberg (granitic, vertical and delicate), Geisberg (intense and fine, 15-30 years), or Brand (sunny and precise, on two-mica granite). These cuvées, often confidential and allocated to the finest tables, embody the Trimbach style: elegant, balanced, and terroir-driven.
