Jules Desjourneys

All the wines of the estate Jules Desjourneys

The estate Jules Desjourneys is currently run by winemaker Fabien Duperray, whose experience has been forged alongside some of Burgundy's most eminent winemakers, including brothers Arnaud Ente and Benoit Ente, Christophe Perrot-Minot, and Jean-Yves Bizot. Having acquired considerable expertise, the desire to create his own wines and his own domaine led him to venture into the Beaujolais region, further south, and later to expand his estate with parcels in Saint-Véran, Pouilly-Vinzelles and Pouilly-Fuissé, in the Mâconnais. So you'll find Burgundy and Beaujolais wines in this category.

In homage to the regional pope of natural wines, Jules Chauvet, he named his domaine Jules Desjourneys. His wines are characterised by a meticulous approach, both in the vineyards, with biodynamic practices, and in the cellar.

Jules Desjourneys in Beaujolais

Philosophy and approach: The Jules Desjourneys estate is guided by a philosophy that respects nature and the terroir. Winemaker Jules Desjourneys is known for his commitment to biodynamic viticulture and his refusal to use chemical inputs. His aim is to bring out the full character of the terroir in his wines.

Surface area: Domaine Jules Desjourneys has a relatively small surface area, but pays particular attention to each parcel. The vines are located in some of the finest crus in the Beaujolais, including Fleurie, Moulin à Vent and Chénas.

Grape varieties grown: Jules Desjourneys concentrates mainly on the Gamay grape variety for the production of red wines. Gamay is a grape variety that expresses itself particularly well in this part of the Beaujolais, producing fruity, elegant red wines when vinified with care.

Natural winemaking: The estate is renowned for its natural winemaking. This means that Jules Desjourneys uses indigenous yeasts for fermentation, avoids adding chemicals and limits the use of sulphur. This approach allows the wines to more closely reflect the terroir and display natural characteristics.

Red wines: The red wines produced by Jules Desjourneys are often described as elegant, expressive and well-balanced. The Gamay grape, with its fruity profile, is used to create wines that are both approachable when young and capable of ageing well in the cellar.

Recognition: Although the estate is not huge, Jules Desjourneys' wines have gained international recognition for their quality and authenticity. They are often sought after by lovers of natural wines and those who appreciate pure expressions of terroir.

In short, the Jules Desjourneys wine estate stands out for its natural, biodynamic approach, using Gamay grapes to produce elegant, expressive red wines that respect the terroir.

Jules Desjourneys in Burgundy

Despite his strong character, the owner has not given up his passion for the prestigious Chardonnays of Burgundy!

The estate then expanded into the Mâconnais region of Burgundy, producing vintages in several appellations:

  • Pouilly Loché
  • Mâcon Fuissé
  • Mâcon Prissé
  • Mâcon Verzé
  • Saint Véran

The first vintages signed from 2014 onwards have convinced wine-lovers of its talent, who are looking for wines that are at once precise, vibrant and energetic.

The domaine knows what it's doing with Chardonnays, just as it does with Gamays in Beaujolais.
