The history of Domaine Marcel Deiss is that of a passionate family rooted in Alsatian soil since 1744. The Deiss family—winegrowers, blacksmiths and bell founders—settled in Bergheim after the Thirty Years’ War, beginning an enduring attachment to this borderland. In 1947, after the Second World War and a military career, Marcel Deiss founded the estate to reconnect with his winemaking roots. Together with his son André, he built a vineyard stretching across the slopes of Bergheim and neighboring villages such as Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr and Sigolsheim.

The next generation arrived with Jean-Michel Deiss, who took over the estate in the 1980s and revolutionized its practices by adopting field blending in 1984, inspired by the Grand Cru Schoenenbourg inherited from a former owner. This "troublemaker," as some affectionately call him, challenged convention by replanting his grands crus with mixed varieties, championing terroir over cloned grape varieties. A pioneer of biodynamics in Alsace, he converted all the plots in 1997, incorporating cosmic preparations, natural composts and a humble, farmer’s approach to nature. Today, Jean-Michel’s son Mathieu Deiss carries on this legacy with renewed passion, even creating Vignoble du Rêveur in Bennwihr from family vines. On south-facing slopes, its clay-limestone, sandstone and Keuper or Oligocene marl soils reveal rare geological diversity: deep faults that let roots reach down as far as 40 meters, weathered limestone that lends tannic power, and variegated marls that impart striking minerality. Winemaking at Domaine Marcel Deiss

Winemaking at Domaine Marcel Deiss is a minimalist art, guided by respect for terroir and a philosophy centered on living systems. The grapes, handpicked at full physiological ripeness—often late to capture the soil’s tactile expression—are gently pressed with suitable equipment to preserve the integrity of the berries. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts takes place in large oak casks or stainless-steel tanks, sometimes over months for low-nitrogen cuvées, without chaptalization, acidification or synthetic additives. No enzymes, selected bacteria or gum arabic: the natural process takes precedence, with aging on the lees bringing creamy richness.

In a modest cellar, patience takes center stage: frequent lees stirring creates meltingly smooth textures, while minimal filtration preserves vitality and complexity. Biodynamics informs every stage, from lunar cycles to preparations intended to foster harmony between the cosmos and the earth. Made without additives, these wines invite "geosensory tasting": salivation reveals the crystalline verticality of limestone or the sedimentary horizontality of clay. The Cuvées of Domaine Marcel Deiss

Domaine Marcel Deiss organizes its wines into three signature ranges: Fruit Wines (single-varietal), Terroir Wines (site-specific field blends) and Time Wines (late-harvest and noble-rot selections). 

Fruit Wines: These varietal wines, sourced from village plots, highlight the purity of Alsatian grape varieties. Alsace Riesling offers lively, mineral acidity, ideal as an aperitif; Pinot Gris brings opulent roundness and notes of ripe fruit; Pinot Blanc charms with its lemony freshness and versatility at the table; Gewurztraminer delights with exotic aromas and balanced sweetness; and Muscat Blanc bursts with pure floral aromas. They have an aging potential of 5 to 10 years.

Terroir Wines: The heart of the estate, these field blends celebrate place without naming the grape varieties. Alsace Blanc "Complantation" combines 13 Alsatian varieties in a lively, textured wine that faithfully reflects its diverse soils. Alsace Rouge, 100% Pinot Noir, recalls silky Burgundies with its fine tannins and red fruit. The estate’s self-designated Premier Crus include Berckhem (fresh and saline) and Saint-Hippolyte Rouge (spicy and structured). Sites such as Englegarten (gravelly and airy), Rotenberg (iron-rich and powerful) and Grasberg (rocky and saline) offer distinctive, dry, food-friendly wines.

The Grands Crus shine:

Altenberg de Bergheim: Planted with a field blend of 13 grape varieties (including Chasselas Rose), this clay-limestone-sandstone Grand Cru produces an opulent, creamy, tangy sweet wine that combines power and finesse. A calm, sunny terroir, it excels in noble-rot wines and ages for 20–30 years.

Mambourg: A blend of Pinots (Gris, Beurot, Blanc and Noir) grown on weathered Oligocene limestone. Spherical, dry, tannic and full-bodied, with a citrus core; early ripening and exceptionally complex. Ages for 15–20 years; a match for fine meats.

Schoenenbourg: Predominantly old Riesling vines and unknown varieties grown on gypsum-rich Keuper marl. Off-dry to sweet, mineral, peppery and smoky, with "earthy" depth; Alsace’s greatest fine wine for aging (30–50 years), imposing and timeless.

Time Wines: These patiently made cuvées capture noble rot. Late Harvest (VT) Riesling or Gewurztraminer offers balanced opulence; Selection of Noble Berries (SGN) yields intensely concentrated sweet wines, such as Schoenenbourg SGN. These rarities express their terroir over decades.
