History of Domaine Marcel Deiss

The history of Domaine Marcel Deiss is that of a passionate lineage, rooted in the Alsatian soil since 1744. The Deiss family, combining winemakers, ironworkers and bell-founders, settled in Bergheim after the Thirty Years' War, marking an unwavering attachment to this frontier land. It was in 1947, in the aftermath of the Second World War, that Marcel Deiss, following a military career, founded the estate to reconnect with his viticultural roots. Together with his son André, he built a vineyard extending across the slopes of Bergheim and neighbouring villages such as Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr and Sigolsheim.

The succession came with Jean-Michel Deiss, who took over the estate in the 1980s and revolutionised practices by adopting co-planting as early as 1984, inspired by the Grand Cru Schoenenbourg inherited from a former owner. This "trouble-maker", as some affectionately nicknamed him, defied conventions by replanting his grands crus with varietal blends, championing terroir over cloned grape variety. A pioneer of biodynamics in Alsace, he converted all plots in 1997, incorporating cosmic preparations, natural composts and a humble, peasant-like stance towards nature. Today, Mathieu Deiss, son of Jean-Michel, perpetuates this legacy with renewed fervour, even creating the Vignoble du Rêveur in Bennwihr from the family vines. This family saga, marked by battles for quality-driven viticulture, against excessive yields and in favour of the authentic expression of place, positions Domaine Marcel Deiss among the two or three greatest estates in Alsace.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Marcel Deiss

Domaine Marcel Deiss excels through the mosaic of its terroirs, a fascinating "fault field" of 38 hectares around Ribeauvillé, where geology, topography and climate conspire to produce exceptional wines. Located on south-facing slopes, these clay-limestone, sandstone and marl soils from the Keuper and Oligocene periods reveal a rare geological diversity: deep faults allowing roots to plunge up to 40 metres, rounded limestone for tannic power, iridescent marls for a striking minerality. The Alsatian continental climate, with its harsh winters, stormy summers and misty autumns, encourages slow ripening, ideal for noble rot and late harvests stretching into late October.

Biodynamic viticulture lies at the heart of this approach: high planting density to limit vigour, short pruning inspired by Cistercian rules, sowing of nectar-rich cover crops for biodiversity, and agroforestry with fruit trees sharing their mycorrhizae with the vines. Co-planting, the "biodiversity lung", blends Alsatian grape varieties (Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Sylvaner, etc.) and orphan varieties, all harvested together for natural consistency against coulure. Without herbicides or chemical fertilisers, the estate ploughs, hoes and grasses its plots, encouraging beneficial fauna, birds and bees. The result: rustic, deep vines producing grapes radiating with vital energy. These terroirs, from the early-ripening Mambourg to the vertical Schoenenbourg, passing through the harmonious Altenberg de Bergheim, embody the essence of place — a multifactorial concept where soil, climate and winegrower dialogue to create structured, textured and timeless wines.

Vinifications at Domaine Marcel Deiss

Winemaking at Domaine Marcel Deiss is a minimalist art, guided by respect for the terroir and a philosophy "of the living". The grapes, harvested by hand at full physiological ripeness — often late to capture the tactile expression of the soil — are gently pressed with adapted machinery, preserving the integrity of the berries. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place in large oak vats or stainless steel tanks, sometimes over several months for low-nitrogen cuvées, without chaptalization, acidification or synthetic additives. No enzymes, no selected bacteria, no gum arabic: only the natural process prevails, with lees ageing for a creamy richness.

In a humble cellar, the emphasis is on patience: frequent lees-stirring for melting textures, and minimal filtration to preserve vitality and complexity. Biodynamics permeates every stage, from lunar cycles to preparations fostering cosmic-terrestrial harmony. Without additives, these wines express "geo-sensory tasting": a salivation revealing the crystalline verticality of limestone or the sedimentary horizontality of clay. From spherical dry wines to baroque sweet wines, each vinification sublimes the terroir, offering a vital energy that forges gustatory memories.

The cuvées of Domaine Marcel Deiss

Domaine Marcel Deiss structures its wines into three iconic ranges: Vins de Fruits (single-varietal), Vins de Terroirs (co-planting by lieu-dit) and Vins de Temps (late harvests and noble rot selections).

Vins de Fruits: These varietal wines, sourced from village-level plots, highlight the purity of Alsatian grape varieties. The Alsace Riesling offers a lively, mineral acidity, ideal as an aperitif; the Pinot Gris unfolds an opulent roundness with notes of ripe fruit; the Pinot Blanc seduces with its lemony freshness and gastronomic versatility; the Gewurztraminer enchants with its exotic aromas and balanced sweetness; finally, the Muscat Blanc bursts with pure florality. With an ageing potential of 5 to 10 years.

Vins de Terroirs: The beating heart of the estate, these co-planted blends celebrate the place without mentioning the grape varieties. The Alsace Blanc "Complantation" brings together the 13 Alsatian varieties for a lively, textured wine, a faithful mirror of the diverse soils. The Alsace Rouge, 100% Pinot Noir, evokes the silky Burgundian style with its fine tannins and red fruits. Among the self-proclaimed Premiers Crus: Berckhem (fresh and iodine-tinged), Saint-Hippolyte Rouge (spicy and structured). The lieux-dits such as Englegarten (gravelly, airy), Rotenberg (ferrous, powerful) or Grasberg (rocky, saline) offer unique, dry and gastronomic profiles.

The Grands Crus shine:

Altenberg de Bergheim: Co-planted with all 13 grape varieties (including Chasselas Rose), this clay-limestone-sandstone Grand Cru produces a baroque, creamy and tangy sweet wine, blending power and finesse. A calm and sun-drenched terroir, it excels in noble rot; ageing potential of 20–30 years.

Mambourg: Blend of Pinots (Gris, Beurot, Blanc, Noir), on rounded Oligocene limestone. Spherical dry wine, tannic and rich, with a lemony pip at its core; extreme precocity and complexity. Ageing potential of 15–20 years, ideal with noble cuts of meat.

Schoenenbourg: Predominantly old Rieslings and unknown varieties on gypseous Keuper marls. Off-dry to mineral, peppery and smoky sweet wine of a "telluric" depth; the greatest Alsatian wine for ageing (30–50 years), awe-inspiring and timeless.

Vins de Temps: These cuvées of patience capture noble rot. Vendanges Tardives (VT) in Riesling or Gewurztraminer offer a balanced opulence; Sélections de Grains Nobles (SGN) transcend into concentrated sweet wines, such as the Schoenenbourg SGN. These rarities extend the terroir across decades.
