History of Château Potensac

Château Potensac is far more than a wine estate; it is the testament of a heritage passed down in a unique way within the Delon family, from generation to generation, and above all from mother to daughter. Since time immemorial, the lands of Potensac have been entrusted to the women of the family, a rare and precious legacy. Jean-Hubert Delon, the current owner, inherited it from his paternal grandmother, Georgette Liquard, thereby perpetuating a feminine and family tradition that gives the estate a deeply human and historical dimension.

Founded in the mid-1800s, Château Potensac established itself on the heights of the commune of Ordonnac, in the northern Médoc. The very name of the Médoc, derived from the Latin term "medio aquae" meaning "in the middle of the waters," underlines the intimate connection between these lands and the surrounding natural elements. Over the years, Château Potensac has preserved its authenticity while distinguishing itself in the 2003 Crus Bourgeois classification by being the only estate to obtain the designation of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. A mark of quality that bears witness to the expertise and dedication of the Delon family's teams, who work every day to maintain the excellence of this vineyard.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Potensac

The terroir of Château Potensac is one of the most singular in the Médoc region, offering the vines ideal conditions to develop complex and unique aromas. Located on rich limestone soils, often compared to the prestigious terroirs of Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Émilion, the vineyard benefits from clay and gravelly subsoils. These limestone soils, combined with the slightly elevated slopes of the estate, allow for perfect natural drainage and optimal concentration of aromas in the grapes. The vineyard spans 60 hectares, planted primarily with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, with a few plots of Carmenère, an ancient and rare grape variety in the region.

The Cabernet plots, some over 80 years old, are particularly notable for their resilience and their ability to produce wines of great purity and aromatic richness. With a planting density of 7,700 vines per hectare, these vines have an average age of 50 years, yielding wines of rare concentration and great complexity. The diversity of grape varieties also serves to reinforce the typicity of each cuvée, lending the wines of Château Potensac their powerful and elegant character.

A distinctive aspect of the cuvées of Château Potensac lies in the high percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend, a relatively rare characteristic in the Médoc region. This grape variety brings a unique aromatic freshness and a fine tannic structure to the wines, thereby enhancing their quality and longevity. Thanks to this particularity, the wines of Château Potensac possess a finesse and depth that set them apart in the region, offering a unique expression of the terroir.

Winemaking at Château Potensac

The winemaking approach at Château Potensac is marked by a deep respect for traditional methods, combined with modern techniques to extract the best from each vintage. The harvest, carried out manually on the oldest plots, ensures a carefully selected yield of irreproachable quality. The estate uses a combination of stainless steel and concrete vats at controlled temperatures for fermentation, guaranteeing a fine extraction of tannins and an optimal expression of aromas.

Malolactic fermentation, a key step for the structure of the wines, also takes place in vats, preserving the freshness and aromatic purity of the grapes. Subsequently, ageing in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which come from Clos du Marquis, lasts between 14 and 16 months. This maturation in barrels, with one third new wood, imparts remarkable depth and aromatic complexity to the wines, combining spiced and oaky notes with the original fruity aromas.

The technical team overseeing winemaking at Château Potensac is the same as the one in charge of the prestigious estates of Léoville Las Cases and Clos du Marquis. This allows the estate to benefit from a unique expertise and world-renowned know-how, guaranteed by the presence of consulting oenologist Eric Boissenot, recognised for his mastery of blending and the ageing of great wines.

The Cuvées of Château Potensac

Château Potensac

The Fine Wine of the estate, Château Potensac, embodies the pure and refined style of the Médoc, renowned for its tight structure and great ageing potential. Produced on the clay-gravel slopes of the commune of Ordonnac, this wine combines richness and freshness, offering dense and spiced tannins, with a finish of great aromatic depth. Château Potensac captivates lovers of characterful wines with its pure and powerful palate, marked by a harmonious texture and rare complexity. Capable of ageing admirably in the cellar, this wine reaches a peak of finesse after a few years of ageing, fully revealing its fruity and spiced notes.

La Chapelle de Potensac

Created in 2002 by Jean-Hubert Delon, La Chapelle de Potensac is the second wine of the estate, crafted with the same attention to detail and quality as the Fine Wine. Sourced from plots situated around the historic terroir of Potensac, this wine is distinguished by its roundness and freshness, balanced by delicate fruit aromas and supple tannins. Bearing a label inspired by the hamlet's chapel, La Chapelle de Potensac is a tribute to the estate's heritage, characterised by a juicy texture and a beautiful fruity expression. More approachable than Château Potensac, it can be enjoyed with pleasure from its earliest years while also being capable of ageing for a few additional years.

The Médoc, one of the prestigious appellations of the Bordeaux wine region, is renowned for producing remarkable wines, particularly in its finest vintages. Among the most notable, one finds iconic years such as 1975, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989, and 1990, which have left their mark on fine wine enthusiasts. Other exceptional vintages include 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, each recognised for its balance and depth. More recently, the years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 continue this tradition, with particularly elegant and promising wines. These vintages offer an exceptional palette of flavours and longevity, reinforcing Bordeaux's reputation as a world reference in the realm of wines.

Château Potensac embodies the charm and rigour of the pure Médoc style, with wines that blend tradition and innovation, while reflecting the unique qualities of their terroir. Whether with the Fine Wine or with La Chapelle de Potensac, the estate offers accessible, generous, and elegant wines with an exceptional ageing potential. Lovers of great Bordeaux wines will find in Château Potensac a choice ally, a reliable and consistent wine that delights the most discerning palates while offering an excellent quality-to-price ratio.
