Founded in 1947, Domaine Belluard is located in the heart of the Arve valley, in the village of Ayse in Savoie. Its vineyard, which spans nearly 11 hectares of vines of which 10 hectares are white, is planted on steep slopes of calcareous scree, and its singularity lies in the cultivation of the Gringet grape variety, a grape endemic to Savoie. This Gringet variety, very little known, is cultivated almost exclusively within the AOC Ayse appellation (across a total of 22 hectares for around twelve producers), and Domaine Belluard produces nearly half of it with its 10 hectares.

Domaine Belluard holds a distinctive place in Savoie’s wine landscape thanks to its near-exclusive focus on the Gringet grape. This native variety grows only in Ayse, Haute-Savoie, and nowhere else in the world. Barely 20 hectares remain in total, around half of which belong to the estate. With so much of this little-known terroir in the hands of one producer, it is an essential reference for lovers of rare, authentic wines.
Yes, Domaine Belluard is a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Savoie. Having started with a conventional approach, Dominique Belluard gradually integrated the principles of organic and then biodynamic farming, definitively crossing that threshold in 2001, thanks in particular to the teachings of François Bouchet and Pierre Masson. This philosophy, founded on respect for the natural balances of living things, is directly reflected in the purity and depth of the wines produced on the estate.
Dominique Belluard, a visionary winemaker and true ambassador of Gringet, passed away suddenly in 2021, leaving an immense void in the world of Savoyard wine. The estate has since been taken over by Vincent Ruiz, a young winemaker trained under Franck Balthazar in Cornas, who renamed the property "Domaine du Gringet" in homage to the grape variety so dear to his predecessor. The cuvées continue in the same guiding direction: natural, precise, and deeply rooted in their alpine terroir.
The estate is located in the commune of Ayse, in Haute-Savoie, at the heart of the Arve valley, halfway between Geneva and Chamonix, on steep hillsides facing due south at an altitude of 450 metres. The geological diversity there is remarkable: one finds red clays rich in alumina and iron on the emblematic plot "Le Feu", argilo-calcareous strata for the cuvée "Grandes Jorasses", and calcareous scree from the Chablais massif for "Les Alpes". It is this mosaic of soils that gives the wines of Domaine Belluard their characteristic minerality.
Domaine Belluard offers several signature cuvées, all made from Gringet or other little-known Savoyard grape varieties. Among the most sought-after are "Le Feu", a single-parcel wine from red clay soils considered the estate’s most complex; "Les Perles du Mont-Blanc", a 100% Gringet sparkling cuvée praised for its energy and minerality; and "Les Alpes", a dry white with remarkable alpine freshness. The estate also produces a 100% Altesse cuvée and a little-known red Mondeuse, with only around 1,000 bottles produced each year.
The white wines of Domaine Belluard, marked by a lively acidity, a stony minerality, and complex aromas of white fruits, citrus, and alpine flowers, pair with a wide variety of dishes. The cuvée "Les Perles du Mont-Blanc" naturally finds its place as an aperitif or with seafood dishes and delicate starters, while "Monsieur Gringet" reveals itself fully alongside scallops gratin with hazelnuts or a roast veal accompanied by spring vegetables. The more complex and aged cuvées, such as "Le Feu", deserve a decanter and blossom with alpine gastronomy dishes.
Founded in 1947 by the Belluard family, the estate began as a mixed farm combining vineyards, orchards and livestock on land acquired in the late 1940s in the small Ayse wine-growing area. In the 19th century, the region had more than 300 hectares of vines, but phylloxera, wars and rural depopulation had reduced that area to around 20 hectares by the 1980s. In 1988, Dominique Belluard, newly qualified in viticulture and enology in Beaune, took over the family farm and brought to it a deep passion for native grape varieties. Recognizing the potential of Gringet, an indigenous white variety present since antiquity and reduced to just 22 hectares worldwide, he steered the estate toward producing fine wines that express their terroir. A decisive turning point came in 2001 with the conversion to biodynamics, inspired by figures such as Pierre Masson, to restore soil vitality and express the wines’ Alpine soul. Under Dominique—a reserved perfectionist who loved the Alps—Domaine Belluard became a worldwide reference for natural wine enthusiasts, with cuvées celebrated by Michelin-starred restaurants and discerning sommeliers. Dominique’s sudden death in June 2021 left an immense void, but his wife Valérie, supported by friends including Jean-François Ganevat, completed the 2020 vintage with dedication, guiding a transition toward new horizons while honoring his legacy.
Domaine Belluard’s vines thrive on steep, south-facing slopes at elevations of 350–450 meters, sheltered from cold northerly winds by the Môle massif. Documented as far back as the 11th century, this historic vineyard sits on an exceptionally diverse mosaic of Alpine terroirs: limestone scree from the Chablais, yellow and white marls from glacial moraines, red clays rich in iron alumina, and glacial sediments that capture the sun’s warmth, allowing the grapes to ripen despite the harsh Alpine climate. More than 95% of its 10 hectares are planted with Gringet, a distinctive, wild grape variety with compact clusters, alongside 3% Mondeuse and 2% Altesse. Farmed biodynamically without certification since 2001, the vines are tended using winch-assisted plowing to accommodate slopes of up to 40°, without chemical pesticides or synthetic inputs. Preparations made from cow manure and silica help strengthen the plants, while the proximity of Mont Blanc gives the grapes lively acidity and crystalline minerality.
In the cellar at Domaine Belluard, winemaking follows a biodynamic philosophy: intervening as little as possible to preserve the terroir’s identity. The hand-harvested grapes are pressed slowly and gently, then undergo spontaneous fermentation using only native yeasts, with no added sulfur or filtration. Aging takes place in egg-shaped concrete vats or amphorae, encouraging the lees to circulate naturally and lending texture and stability without manual bâtonnage. For the sparkling wines, the traditional Champagne method includes extended time on the lees—up to two years—for added complexity. This holistic approach, without chemicals or excessive intervention, produces precise wines alive with mineral energy and Alpine aromas. Each cuvée faithfully reflects its original soil, from taut limestone scree to richer red clays.
Domaine Belluard offers six signature cuvées: two sparkling wines, three Savoie whites and one rare red Mondeuse, each with a distinctive aromatic character and great finesse.
Belluard Mont Blanc Brut Zéro: Made using the traditional method from 100% Gringet, this sparkling wine has been produced with no dosage since 2014. It offers an intense floral nose and a creamy, taut and complex palate. Fresh and focused, with notes of warm mirabelle plums and patchouli, it is a food-friendly wine ideal with seafood or aged cheeses. Minimal sulfur preserves its remarkable Alpine purity.
Les Perles du Mont Blanc (AOC Ayse): Finer and more mineral than its sibling, this 100% Gringet sparkling wine charms with its delicate bubbles and aromas of spiced citrus, wild mint and saline minerals. Perfect as an aperitif, it evokes the freshness of mountain streams, with an airy texture and a lingering finish.
Les Alpes de Belluard (white Vin de Savoie): A blend dominated by Gringet, this taut white offers intense aromas of pear, quince and white flowers, supported by rich dry extract and crystalline acidity. Elegant and airy, it can age for 4 to 6 years and pairs well with grilled fish or poultry.
Les Grandes Jorasses (white Vin de Savoie): Made entirely from Altesse grapes (Roussette de Savoie), this cuvée has a lovely richness on the palate, with notes of ripe fruit, sweet spices and deep minerality. Rich and balanced, it pairs beautifully with creamy dishes or goat cheese.
Le Feu de Belluard (white Vin de Savoie): Made solely from Gringet grown on a plot of iron-rich red clay—the estate’s "hot spot"—this deep, austere wine needs air to reveal its subtle notes of verbena, gentian and white peach. Flamboyant, textured and vibrant, it gains clarity after 2–3 years of aging, like a high-voltage Alpine Chablis.
Mondeuse (red Vin de Savoie): Distinctive and rare, with around 1,000 bottles produced annually from 3% of the vineyard, this old-vine cuvée is fermented with whole clusters and aged in concrete vats. It offers refined fruit, fine tannins and mineral salinity. Superb and built for long aging, it brings out the best in red meats or game dishes, with a style all its own in Savoie.
