Domaine Richard Leroy, a legendary Anjou estate, is located in Rablay-sur-Layon in the Loire and has less than 3 ha across two parcels. Les Noëls de Montbenault covers 2 ha at the top of the Coteaux du Layon hillside, where the shallow soil is rich in rhyolite volcanic rock. This south-facing parcel is exposed to the wind, which helps dry the grapes throughout the year and prevent disease. Clos des Rouliers covers 0.70 ha lower down the hillside. Its soil is much the same, but it is noticeably less windy. Richard Leroy immediately sensed that his terroirs had nothing to envy in the great local appellations.

Richard Leroy is one of the most compelling figures in the Loire Valley wine scene. Nothing predestined him to viticulture: after studying economics, he worked in banking while running an oenology club in Paris. It was a deep passion for great white Fine Wine that led him to give it all up. In 1996, he and his wife Sophie settled in Rablay-sur-Layon, purchasing two hectares of chenin from a farming couple who produced grapes for the cooperative cellar. A rigorous autodidact, he learned his craft in the field and has today become one of the absolute references for dry white chenin blanc in the Loire.
The rarity of Richard Leroy’s wines stems from uncompromising choices in the vineyard and winery. Yields are low, ripeness is carefully controlled, and the wines are made without artifice, using indigenous yeasts and extended aging. The estate covers only a few hectares, naturally limiting production. From 2011 onward, this limited output was met by sudden worldwide recognition: the publication of Étienne Davodeau’s graphic novel "Les Ignorants" introduced the estate to wine lovers around the world, driving demand far beyond production capacity.
Domaine Richard Leroy benefits from two exceptional terroirs in the Anjou noir. The Les Noëls de Montbenault plot, of approximately two hectares, is planted on a windy hilltop slope in Faye d'Anjou, on shallow, rocky soil composed of dense volcanic rhyolites rich in iron, magnesium, feldspar and quartz. Le Clos des Rouliers, smaller, rests on sandy, sandstone schists. These two terroirs, located on schists and volcanic rocks, impart a striking mineral precision to the wines that constitutes the domaine's stylistic signature and clearly distinguishes it from the rest of the Angevin vineyard.
Domaine Richard Leroy offers two dry Chenin Blanc cuvées made exclusively from its own plots: Clos des Rouliers and Noëls de Montbenault. Clos des Rouliers, from a 0.7-hectare plot on sandy, schistose sandstone soils, has a more immediately approachable profile, with saline tension and aromas of fresh quince and almond. Noëls de Montbenault, produced from two hectares of rhyolitic volcanic rock with 50-year-old vines, is a denser, more austere cuvée aged for 18 months in new oak. Since 2008, both wines have been sold as IGP Vin de France following deep disagreements with the INAO.
Yes, Domaine Richard Leroy’s commitment to the environment is longstanding and wholehearted. The vineyard was farmed organically from the outset, received certification in 2002, and is harvested by hand. Richard Leroy later adopted biodynamics, an approach that goes beyond organic requirements by incorporating natural and lunar cycles into vineyard work. Sulfur use has been progressively reduced vintage by vintage, to the point where, depending on the year, the wines are now made with little or no sulfur. This philosophy of minimal intervention is directly reflected in the pure, taut expression of his wines.
Absolutely. Richard Leroy's wines are wines for aging that require patience to express their full potential. With an uncommonly high dry extract density and crafted with minimal sulfur, these wines do not reveal themselves immediately: a few years in the bottle are essential for all their elements to come together. Noëls de Montbenault, in particular, can easily evolve in the cellar for ten to fifteen years, gaining in aromatic complexity and depth. Clos des Rouliers opens up a little earlier, but also benefits from three to five additional years of aging. A cool cellar between 12 and 14°C, sheltered from light, is ideal for preserving them in the best conditions.
Founded in 1996, Domaine Richard Leroy grew out of a bold career change. Richard, a former Parisian banker and host of the prestigious "Grains Nobles" tasting evenings, left the capital with his wife Sophie to pursue viticulture. Passionate about great white wines, he set his sights on the banks of the Layon, 20 kilometers south of Angers, drawn by the potential of Chenin on schist. His initial purchase of 2 hectares at "Les Noëls de Montbenault" marked the start of an adventure: with help from his friend Joël Ménard of Domaine des Sablonettes, Richard produced his first noble-rot grapes in 1996, followed by legendary vintages such as 1997. In 2000, the family settled in Rablay and expanded the estate with 70 ares at "Clos des Rouliers". Faced with the vagaries of the weather, Richard shifted to dry wines in 2002, setting aside botrytis in favor of purity and precision. Certified organic in 2002, he adopted biodynamics and, frustrated by administrative constraints, has labeled his wines IGP Wine de France rather than under their appellation since 2008. Fame came in 2011 with Étienne Davodeau's graphic novel "Les Ignorants", which chronicles a year of shared learning between the winegrower and the artist, fueling worldwide demand for these rare wines.
Domaine Richard Leroy spans two emblematic plots with full southern exposure, at an altitude of 50 to 100 meters, in a continental climate moderated by Atlantic influences. Its rich, varied soils express the character of the Anjou terroir: weathered schist over a schist bedrock, dense volcanic rhyolites (heavy rock containing iron, magnesium, feldspar, and quartz), and spilites (altered basalts). The "Les Noëls de Montbenault" plot (2 hectares), on a windy upper slope in Faye d’Anjou, has shallow, rocky soil ideal for concentrated, healthy grapes. Planted in the 1960s (the vines average 50 years of age), it benefits from natural airflow that helps prevent disease. The "Clos des Rouliers" plot (0.7 hectares), lower on the slope, has softer, sandy, sandstone-rich schist soils and vines averaging 25 years old. Worked by hand without herbicides or insecticides, plowed, and treated with biodynamic preparations, the Chenin vines produce modest yields (7 to 30 hL/ha), ensuring exceptional quality. Known to earlier generations for producing great grapes, this volcanic terroir makes Richard Leroy’s wines benchmarks of the region.
Winemaking at Domaine Richard Leroy takes a minimalist, respectful approach guided by experience and experimentation. The grapes are hand-harvested late to achieve optimal ripeness without botrytis, selecting healthy, concentrated fruit. Gentle pressing and natural settling precede spontaneous fermentation in new barrels (kept for 7–8 years to become neutral), with each plot vinified separately using only native yeasts. The wine ages for 18 months in oak, developing structure and finesse without chemical intervention. A pioneer in this area, Richard reduced sulfites to 10 mg/L through 2010, then eliminated them entirely from 2011 onward after tests showed greater purity in new barrels. He actively experiments to prevent faults such as "mousy taint", adjusting his methods to achieve natural stability. There is no chaptalization or filtration: bottling a year after harvest preserves the wine’s integrity. This biodynamic winemaking, certified by Ecocert, faithfully expresses the terroir in precise, saline, age-worthy cuvées.
Domaine Richard Leroy produces two flagship cuvées of dry Chenin White, sourced exclusively from its own plots. Made in limited quantities, these Vin de France wines stand out for their precision and elegance.
Anjou "Le Clos des Rouliers": From a 0.7-hectare plot of sandy, sandstone-rich schist, with vines averaging 25 years old, this cuvée is more immediately approachable and gentle. Vinified in new barrels without sulfur, it expresses aromas of fresh quince, almond, and subtle honey, with saline tension and mouthwatering bitterness on the finish. Balanced, crystalline, and mineral, it captivates with its precision and length.
Anjou "Les Noëls de Montbenault": From 2 hectares of volcanic rhyolite and 50-year-old vines, this dense, austere cuvée is a masterpiece of balance. Aged for 18 months in new oak, with no sulfur or very little depending on the vintage, it opens with an exuberant bouquet of preserved lemon, quince, popcorn, and subtle herbal infusions. On the palate, lively acidity, harmonious richness, and well-integrated alcohol lead to an extraordinarily long finish that is rich yet pure. A masterful expression of terroir, it embodies age-worthy Chenin at its finest, prized by enthusiasts for its intensity.
