History of Domaine Charles Noëllat

The history of Domaine Charles Noëllat is rooted in the 17th century, when the Noëllat family, established in Meuilley near Nuits-Saint-Georges, was already cultivating the vine with passion. It was in the 19th century that Félix Noëllat laid the foundations of the estate by settling in Vosne-Romanée, the chosen land of Burgundy's great growths. His son, Charles Noëllat, born in 1868, and his wife Anne-Marie, nicknamed Laure, officially founded the estate at the beginning of the 20th century. Despite the turmoil of World War I, when Charles was mobilized, Laure showed remarkable courage by managing the vineyard alone and acquiring new plots, including the illustrious Romanée-Saint-Vivant, located just below the mythical Romanée-Conti.

In the 1930s, the estate expanded to approximately 25 hectares, encompassing prestigious appellations such as Richebourg and Grands-Échezeaux. As a pioneer, Domaine Charles Noëllat distinguished itself by bottling directly at the estate, a rare practice at the time when wines were mostly sold in barrels to négociants. This initiative helped preserve historic vintages, which are today true treasures for collectors.

However, the estate's history is also marked by hardships. Charles's death in 1939, followed by his son André's in 1941, left Laure and her daughter Geneviève in charge during World War II. Their determination allowed the estate to overcome these troubled periods. In the 1940s, Christian Moreau, Geneviève's husband, breathed new life into the estate by consolidating the reputation of its grand crus.

Unfortunately, family disputes in the 1980s led to the fragmentation of the plots. In 1988, the majority of the vineyard was purchased by Lalou Bize-Leroy, co-manager of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, to integrate the prestigious Domaine Leroy. Although Domaine Charles Noëllat no longer exists as an independent entity, its name still resonates thanks to Maison Charles Noëllat, relaunched in 2013 by Stéphane, Charles's great-grandson, and his friend Antoine, who perpetuate the legacy through a rigorous selection of old vintages and exceptional wines.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Charles Noëllat

Domaine Charles Noëllat drew its greatness from its plots located in the most prestigious terroirs of the Côte de Nuits, particularly in Vosne-Romanée. These clay-limestone soils, typical of Burgundy, offered ideal conditions to produce wines of incomparable complexity and elegance. Among the estate's jewels was a plot of Romanée-Saint-Vivant, a grand cru neighboring Romanée-Conti, renowned for its wines of exceptional finesse and depth. The appellations Richebourg and Grands-Échezeaux, also at the heart of the estate, contributed to the renown of its cuvées.

The estate favored an approach respectful of the terroir, limiting its expansion to focus on quality rather than quantity. Each plot was worked with care, in an almost artisanal approach, where observation and listening to the vine took precedence. This philosophy allowed the terroir to express itself fully, giving birth to wines with a unique personality, marked by their balance and remarkable aging potential.

Winemaking at Domaine Charles Noëllat

Winemaking at Domaine Charles Noëllat was a mastered art, combining tradition and innovation. The grapes, from exceptional plots, were harvested at perfect maturity to preserve their aromatic richness. Vinifications took place in oak barrels, according to traditional techniques that respected the uniqueness of each climat. This meticulous approach revealed the purity of the fruit while developing complex and harmonious aromas.

The estate also distinguished itself through its early practice of estate bottling, as early as the 1920s. Unlike the majority of producers at the time, who sold their wines in barrels, Charles Noëllat chose to control the entire process, from vine to bottle. This visionary decision helped preserve rare vintages, now sought after for their exceptional quality and their ability to span decades.

The Cuvées of Domaine Charles Noëllat

The cuvées of Domaine Charles Noëllat were jewels of Burgundy, embodying the excellence of the great growths of the Côte de Nuits. Among the most emblematic were:

Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru: From a mythical plot located below Romanée-Conti, this cuvée was the estate's flagship. Of rare elegance, it offered aromas of ripe red fruits, sweet spices and floral notes, with a silky structure and exceptional aging potential. Each bottle was an invitation to discover the quintessence of the Vosne-Romanée terroir.

Richebourg Grand Cru: This wine, produced on one of Burgundy's most prestigious climats, stood out for its power and complexity. Its notes of blackcurrant, violet and truffle, combined with velvety tannins, made it an exceptional cuvée, prized by connoisseurs.

Grands-Échezeaux Grand Cru: Renowned for its depth and balance, this cuvée revealed aromas of black fruits, spices and undergrowth, with a long and harmonious finish. It embodied the elegance and finesse characteristic of the estate.

Other appellations: The estate also produced wines from renowned climats such as Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée and other plots of the Côte de Nuits. These cuvées, although less known, shared the same quality standards, offering rich and balanced aromatic profiles.

Domaine Charles Noëllat, although acquired in 1988 by Domaine Leroy, remains a legend of Burgundy, whose wines continue to fascinate enthusiasts and collectors. Its cuvées, from the exceptional terroirs of Vosne-Romanée, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Richebourg and Grands-Échezeaux, embody the elegance and complexity of Burgundy's great growths. Thanks to Maison Charles Noëllat, relaunched in 2013 by Stéphane and Antoine, this winemaking heritage continues through rare vintages and carefully selected wines.
