History of Chateau Le Puy

Château Le Puy, located in the wine region of Bordeaux, has a rich and fascinating history dating back over 400 years. Founded in the early 17th century (1610), this family-owned estate has been passed down through generations, perpetuating a centuries-old winemaking heritage. Anchored in tradition and passion, Château Le Puy embodies the essence of winemaking craftsmanship, where respect for the terroir and sustainable viticultural practices have always been at the core of its identity. Fourteen generations of winemakers have thus passed the torch, with the significant role of the Amoreau family notably shaping the property's spirit of independence and freedom, making it a pioneer in the region. A true success story for the Château, which has managed to escape Bordeaux Bashing thanks to its natural practices.

Terroirs, Vines, and Vinification

The vineyards of Château Le Puy extend over exceptional terroirs between Saint Emilion and Pomerol, imbued with a geological and climatic diversity unique to the Bordeaux region. Nestled on the Côteau des Merveilles on the side of Saint-Cibard, the clay-limestone soils benefit from an optimal exposure, allowing the estate's vines to thrive under the benevolent influence of the temperate oceanic climate. Mindful of preserving the natural balance of the ecosystem, the estate practices biodynamic viticulture, favouring environmentally friendly methods and promoting the purest expression of the terroir in its wines. The vines, aged between 35 and 50 years, cover about fifty hectares, even though the total property encompasses around a hundred: a large space is dedicated to forests, ponds, meadows, and pastures. Thus, a balanced ecosystem persists and develops. A beautiful harmony between the vine, the man, and his environment to produce organic and biodynamic wines. The estate has been certified organic and biodynamic since 1990. Vinification at Château Le Puy is orchestrated with meticulous precision. The grapes, hand-picked at perfect maturity, are vinified with meticulous care, favouring non-interventionist techniques to preserve the authenticity of the fruit. No additives are used in the cellar: spontaneous fermentations (and malolactic fermentations) take place in open vats with submerged caps to avoid punching down and to provide oxygenation. A small amount of sulphur is added during draining. Aging occurs in barrels or large casks, with decantation (Emilien cuvée) or dynamication (Barthélémy cuvée) and can last up to 2 years. No new wood is used to respect the aromas naturally present in the wines and to favour micro-oxygenation; then the wines are neither fined nor filtered.

The Domain's Cuvées

Château Le Puy offers a range of cuvées of unparalleled elegance and finesse, reflecting the quintessence of Bordeaux terroir. Among its iconic wines, there are red wines of remarkable depth and intensity, expressing the richness and complexity of traditional Bordeaux grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Each cuvée embodies the very essence of Château Le Puy, combining tradition, expertise, and passion to offer wines of exceptional quality, worthy of the greatest Bordeaux terroirs. The cuvée names derive from the first names of the family's ancestors.

Emilien: historical cuvée of the estate, delicious when young and more complex after some time in the cellar. Amazing organic and biodynamic wines !

Barthélémy: parcel cuvée and very pampered.
