Magnificent estate dating from the 6th century, Château Ausone, located in the commune of Saint Emilion, is one of the rare estates in its appellation to benefit from the status of 1er Grand Cru Classé A (along with Château Cheval Blanc, and more recently Château Pavie and Château Angélus).
Only three families have succeeded one another at this renowned estate. After a few complicated decades that were felt in the wine, it is now Alain Vauthier, together with his daughter, who manages it and has been crafting the wine since 2005, and who has restored Château Ausone to its rank as a mythical wine of the Bordeaux right bank.
The Château's terroir is exceptional: 7 hectares of limestone and clay-limestone soil, facing southeast and protected to the north and west. The vineyard plantings, with an average age of fifty years, are composed of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. The yield is relatively low (approximately 15 to 18,000 bottles per year), justifying both the concentration of the wine and its immense aging potential.
The 1st wine, offered under the name Château Ausone, is renowned for its power and finesse. The fruit expresses itself with elegance on a great minerality with an absolutely remarkable length.
The estate also vinifies a second wine, La Chapelle d'Ausone, whose quantity can range from 4,000 to 10,000 bottles depending on the year and the quality of the vintage.
Among the vintages of Château Ausone that can be found today, the wines can be classified as follows:
- Great vintage: 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012
- Fine vintage : 1976, 1982, 1983, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2004, 2007
- Lesser vintage : 1975, 1978, 1979, 1987, 1989, 1993, 1994
