Divided into two distinct sub-regions, the Rhône Valley vineyard produces wines among the most celebrated in the world: rich and fruity red wines and full-bodied, aromatic white wines.
On the map, two sub-regions can be distinguished: the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône. The former, located in the northern part of the valley, is the most prestigious, with appellations such as Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint Joseph, Condrieu and Cornas, renowned for the quality and longevity of their wines. They are the standard-bearers of the great Rhône wines. The Southern Rhône, being more extensive, produces simpler wines, although certain village appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape stand out for the reputation of their wines, which are capable of very long aging.
The grape varieties used in the north and south are not always the same. For red wines, while the elegant and complex Syrah is ever-present, it is not the dominant variety in the wines of the Southern Rhône Valley, which favors the depth and richness of Grenache. White wines, meanwhile, are produced primarily from Roussanne and Marsanne. Viognier is also found, a variety emblematic of Condrieu and capable of representing up to 20% of the Côte-Rôtie blend.
Not to be missed: the Côte-Rôtie wines from Jean-Michel Gérin, René Rostaing, Guigal or Clusel Roch, as well as the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines from Beaucastel, Clos des Papes, Charvin or Vieux Télégraphe.
