Located in Burgundy, on the terroir of Puligny Montrachet, Domaine Leflaive has existed since 1735. Largely reconstituted between 1905 and 1925 by Joseph Leflaive, it is now Anne-Claude, his granddaughter, who heads the family estate. Managing director since 1994, she was long assisted by cellar master Pierre Morey.
The estate owns numerous parcels across 24 hectares of land in total. All the grands crus of Puligny are represented: Chevalier Montrachet, Batard Montrachet, Bienvenues Batard-Montrachet, a mythical Montrachet produced in infinitesimal quantities, as well as several premiers crus: Les Combettes, Les Folatières and Les Pucelles. Finally, the estate also owns almost the entirety of the premier cru "Les Clavoillons" and just over one hectare of Meursault. Planted exclusively with Chardonnay on clay-limestone soil, the average age of the vines is approximately 30 years.
From the moment she took over the estate in the 1990s, Anne-Claude chose to transform the farming methods to integrate biodynamic practices which, by reducing yields, allow for an increase in wine quality. Already of great reputation, these wines have reached a remarkable level in recent years. Parker said they possess "beyond the steely minerality of great white Burgundies, a floral component supported by extraordinary texture and gustatory intensity." No matter the cuvée: all are highly recommended. As for the aging potential of the wines, it is absolutely remarkable.
