Domaine Guiberteau

par Anne-claire weyne

Since the late 1990s, Romain Guiberteau marks the renewal of an estate in Saumur (Loire Valley Loire) which has belonged to his family since 1934. Four generations of enthusiasts have succeeded one another to produce very fine wines with real aging potential.
In organic farming, Romain produces 3 cuvées in Saumur red (Guiberteau "Domaine", Guiberteau Les Motelles, Guiberteau Les Arboises) and 5 in Saumur Blanc (Guiberteau "Domaine", Guiberteau Les Moulins, Guiberteau Clos de Guichaux, Guiberteau Brézé, Guiberteau Clos des Carmes) for a total production of 45,000 bottles on a total surface area of 14.5 hectares.
Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, growing on deep clay and limestone soils, are enhanced by the most natural vinification possible, aging in oak barrels and concrete depending on the cuvées, always with a long maceration to extract the maximum potential from the grapes. Thus, the whites are refined, taut and fleshy at the same time, worthy of the great Burgundies from the Côte de Beaune. The reds are fleshy and fruity, ready for excellent aging.
The only downside for this now established estate: with 70% export, its bottles are becoming rare on the market! While the whites are more sought after than the reds, the latter have gained finesse over recent vintages. An avowed disciple of Charly and Nady Foucault from Clos Rougeard, Romain Guiberteau benefited from their experience at the beginning and today confirms his legitimacy by being notably present on the great starred tables.
