Founded in 1612 by Capuchin monks, this highly regarded estate in Alsace was purchased by the Faller brothers in 1898. Domaine Weinbach is a "women's" estate. Indeed, from 1979, the estate was taken over by Colette Faller and her two daughters Catherine and Laurence. Since 2015, and following the death of Laurence Faller, Catherine and her son Théo have been at the helm of the family estate. Domaine Weinbach spans approximately thirty hectares of vineyards.
Of the planted surface, approximately 28 hectares are planted with white grape varieties (48% Riesling, 25% Gewurztraminer, 13% Alsace Pinot Gris, 7% Pinot Blanc, 3% Muscat à petits grains blancs and 4% Sylvaner). Just over one hectare is planted with red grape varieties (100% Pinot Noir). The vines are on average around thirty years old. Vine cultivation is carefully managed and environmentally respectful. The grapes are harvested by hand. Since 1990, Domaine Weinbach has been certified in organic farming. Vine work is therefore carried out without herbicides, fertilizers, or chemical treatments and insecticides. Since 1998 Domaine Weinbach has also practised biodynamics, without certification. The vineyard is located on magnificent terroirs such as the Clos des Capucins, Altenbourg and the grands crus Schlossberg, Furstentum, Mambourg and Marckrain. Domaine Weinbach produces approximately 130,000 bottles per year. Among the estate's wines, the Alsace Pinot Noir W cuvée expresses beautiful stone fruit aromas. The Pinot Gris Altenbourg cuvée offers toasted notes. The Alsace Gewurztraminer SGN cuvée displays a beautiful aromatic complexity. The Altenbourg Quintessence de Grains Nobles cuvée is an extremely rare, intense and well-balanced wine. Finally, the Alsace Grand Cru Riesling Schlossberg Clos des Capucins Sainte Catherine cuvée, with its notes of candied lemon and a beautiful lingering finish, has excellent ageing potential.
